Rating: Summary: far more than what I expected... Review: I've been looking for books on making baby food, so I picked this one up at a bookstore and I haven't put it down since. This was far beyond what I expected, and everytime I read it, I am pleasantly surprised with more useful information. Not only is it a book about feeding your baby healthful easy-to-prepare foods, but it also focuses on baby safety, money saving tips, and eveything else you can even imagine. It is by far the most thourough and comprehensive book on the subject that I've seen so far. I would recommend this book to all moms who not only wish to feed their baby nutritious food, but are also concerned with baby's health and safety, are creative in their parenting, and who are always interested in saving money by recylcing what is already in your own home.
Rating: Summary: Great book and easy recipes! Review: I'm so glad I bought this book. It truly saves tons of time and money. This book makes it unbelievably easy (and fast) to feed your baby nutritious and delicious homemade baby food. It's also filled with great organizational tips (new moms need this), recipes and cool ideas for crafts. I would recommend this book to all new moms.
Rating: Summary: The perfect resource for the new parent! Review: It can be overwhelming at first. A baby, happily subsisting on one easy to provide substance (breastmilk or formula)now needs more complex nutrition. What do you start with? How much should you feed her? What food is healthiest for him? Do babies really need to eat that stuff in all the tiny little bottles, or is real food ok? Look no further, your ultimate baby food reference is here! From very specific instructions on the first feeding, to detailed lists of foods and amounts, over 350 recipes, advice on cleaning and food safety, kitchen craft ideas, and a crash course in nutrition... this book really covers it all! There are not only exhausitve details about making your own baby food, but schedules and how-tos that make it easy and not overly time consuming. Several friends recommended it to me, and I see why! You really don't need any other baby food book. Yaron is informed and authoritative, without being pushy. She even admits to having a few bottles of the jarred food on hand for emergencies and travel. Be flexible, do what works for you... that's the message here! I was a bit concerned when I read several of the reviews below: the author didn't know the danger of nitrates or food allergies? Well, clearly the reviewers didn't read the book thoroughly or carefully. Yaron writes on pages 38-39 in detail about the nitrate problem in spinach and carrots, what causes it, the dangers, and what age most doctors agree it is safe for babies to eat these foods. Pages 28-34 deal in detail with the problem of food allergies, including egg whites and peanuts. General recommendations are made, as well as advice if your family has any food allergies, and constant encouragement to discuss your feeding plans with your pediatrician. For example, she does use egg yolks in her baby food, but only the complex proteins in egg whites are considered a high-risk allergen. Not only that, but she gives lists of high allergy danger foods, and tells parents how to recognize potentially dangerous allergic reactions. Again, perhaps some people just didn't read the book cover to cover. In my opinion, if anything she is a little too obsessive about food safety, but then again I eat raw cookie dough and don't write books about baby food. If your feeding plans are to fill your baby with pre-processed, pre-packaged baby food you don't need this book, and Gerber sends out a little advertisement/checklist to every new Mom in America anyhow. If you are serious about giving your child the best nutritional start in life, then this is the book for you!
Rating: Summary: A big help! Review: As a first time mom, I wanted to feed my child healthy food, but I was pretty clueless. Ruth's book has been great. My daughter has been sick 4 times in her 14 months of life (1 was a milk allergy, 1 was a cauliflower allergy, 1 was something Daddy gave all of us, so only 1 cold of her own!) I owe it all to Ruth for showing me what was healthy. There are some things that I think are a little over the top, but you don't have to agree with everything she says. It's just a great guideline, with lots of helpful tips. I'll be using it again for my next child.
Rating: Summary: Extremely informative Review: I was very ignorant when it came to healthy foods and I absolutely love the way this book spells out the do and don't for my baby. It has exposed me to healthy grains and veggies I've never knew existed. You also do not have to be a nutritionist or a doctor to read and understand this book. Yaron explains everything in very easy, step by step language. Anyone and everyone can benefit from this book.It has opened my son to a variety of new dishes and fun snacks. Not only is following this book healthy for your child, but economical too! Her dedication and honesty are commendable.
Rating: Summary: A MUST have for a new mom! Review: Although the author is a vegan and does not tout any meat products and encourages organically grown everything... this book is FANTASTIC! It gave me the confidence to make my own baby food and it was so easy! It's a great book for a baby shower too. I give it to all my friends because my copy is very dog eared.
Rating: Summary: A very informative, helpful and useful book Review: Hi, I am from Singapore and a first-time mother. When I first started weaning my baby, I didn't know what to feed her. I just gave her whatever that are commercially available in the local supermarket. I had so many questions like when the paediatrician told me I could feed her fruits, ya, what kind of fruits, there are so many fruits... Then as I surf the internet, I found someone mentioned and high-recommendedly this book SUPER BABY FOOD by Ruth Yaron... I bought the book with some hesitation because firstly it is written by an american writer(I am a chinese and living in the other part of the world),secondly, I don't think I have the time to cook for my baby and thirdly, I know nothing about cooking. I didn't regret buying the book. It has helped me tremedously. Whenever and whatever I don't know or not sure, I just search for it in the book. It is vv informative, it's worth every cent i spent on the book (it's rather expensive here).. I have also learned alot abt nutritious food, not only for my baby but for my family as well.. hmmm... it's one of the best books I have gotten..
Rating: Summary: The perfect resource for new moms Review: After skimming through several other baby food books, I found Yaron's to be exactly what I needed. An intelligent, easy, but detailed resource. It's interesting to read, and incredibly thorough. In two pages she covers the ins and outs of just water! (Bottled water info, water with meals, hard or soft water..) Really her book is an ingenious resource for every question you might have when you start your baby on solids. Being a new mom who is in love with motherhood - I pour over information on giving my baby the best - this is perfect. It saved me time calling my pediatrician about every last detail. Read the back cover online - it will show you the enourmity of the wonderful and useful information covered inside.
Rating: Summary: Great education on nutrition for your baby! Review: If you want to learn about nutrition for your baby (and your whole family), and you aren't afraid to shop at a natural foods store every once in awhile then this book is an excellent choice! Sure the author is vegetarian, but you can always adjust your baby's diet to add some meat (as I did). Her views and methods are a bit "over the top", but be flexible and use what makes sense to you. Keep an open mind! The methods for cooking, storing and freezing baby food are quick and easy. Our family pediatrician only questioned the section on including cooked egg yolks so soon in baby's diet. I have an 18 month year old who has never been sick, despite being a preemie. I have to think that nursing for the first year and a healthy diet have had a lot to do with it. I constantly go back to this book for ideas and nutritional education. And now with another baby coming soon, I look forward to starting all over again. This book is well worth its price. Put it by your bed at night and enjoy reading it little by little. Then take it down to the kitchen and use it to help give your baby a healthy diet.
Rating: Summary: My doctor warned me against some of the things she suggests Review: (like giving a baby younger than 1 year cooked egg yolks -potential salmonella poisoning even though they are cooked- and nuts - potential serious allergen -so I can't give it my highest ratings. But it looks like a good basic course on food safety when you're making homemade baby food.
