Rating: Summary: YUCK! Only Drs could author a cookbook this bland! Review: I had this book on my wish list and was excited to receive it for my birthday. But I am soo dissapointed!
It is a visually unappealing, cheap quality printed book with a poor layout. So bland vanilla, I don't even *want* to look for a recipe in it! Even if a cookbook isn't filled with graphic illustrations or full-color photos, it can still have an easy-to-read layout, but this book is nothing but run-on recipes and uneccesary opinions by the Drs. It appears as if they simply wrote in a word document file and printed it - no setup, no flow. Bleck. Cooking should be art, just because it's low-carb, doesn't mean it has to be uninviting or lifeless. As my husband (Marketing) says, only a Dr could make a cookbook so sterile!
Other than that, the recipes are good but it's so unpleasant to look at - I'm giving the book to Goodwill.
Rating: Summary: One of 3 Low Carb Cookbooks I Count on Review: I highly recommend this cookbook. The desert and candy sections are very good. I didn't like the breads very much, but the main course dishes have been great. I really like that the carbs are listed for each ingredient in the recipe. That is so useful when I change the amount of an ingredient in a recipe to lower the carb count or adjust the recipe to our tastes. I bought it for the baking ideas, but really like it for the other recipes. I keep this cookbook handy along with "500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love" and the Atkins "Quick and Easy New Diet Cookbook".
Rating: Summary: Gives you ideas you may not have thought of before Review: I know that some of the people here are saying that the book is nothing special and you can create your own low carb foods, but when you're just starting out on a low carb diet and totally missing the foods you used to eat...it's tough. This book gives you ways to low carb the foods you miss with stuff you may not have even knew was out there for you to utilize (how many "average joes" out there recognize all the uses of soy???). The food tastes good and it's worth getting if you want to try low carb but have foods that you're finding a difficult time parting with.
Rating: Summary: Farm cooking never tasted so good Review: I lost 60 pounds on Protein Power several years ago. I recently found this cookbook and I'm thrilled to find that it is just as it claims, Comfort Foods! I used to fix high carb Farm style meals that really stuck to your ribs, literally. I find these recipes just as satisfying and tasty, if not more so. My husband, who is not a dieter, loves and raves about how good everything is. He just now called me from work to tell me he had just eaten his lunch and loved it. It was last nights leftover Cheesy Broccoli Chicken. Don't be fooled, these recipes aren't hard to prepare at all. The chef goes into detail on how to prepare every dish. No guess work here. Most of the recipes use foods you already have on hand. How cool is that. I also have "The 30-Day Low-Carb Diet Solution" by the Drs. Eades. What to eat at each meal and how to prepare it too! It's a no brainer.
Rating: Summary: Excellent cookbook! Review: I love this book. The barbecue sauce tastes fantastic. I would give it more stars if that were possible. My only cricitcisms: she does not seem to believe in sweetening breads. (I usually add a couple tbsp of Splenda) and I am at a loss for understanding why the Eades have their photo on the cover without the woman who developed most of the recipes. Yes, they are wonderful people and have discovered a great nutritional plan, but where honestly do they come off?
Rating: Summary: GREAT Review: I recently purchased five low carb cookbooks. This one is fabulous and contains recipes that are truly "comforting" and delicious. I reach for it first.
Rating: Summary: A waste of money Review: I spent fourty-eight dollars buying all the odd ingredients for all the breads and desserts in this book (vital wheat gluten, whey soy powder, almond meal, etc.) and not a one of them were any good. The magic rolls, pizza crust and cookies all have a very mealy texture and tasted quite plane. They also made quite a mess of my kitchen.
Rating: Summary: Atkins Dieter's Beware Review: I was disappointed with this book and I don't use it. Recipes list carb counts but do not list fiber content. This leaves you unable to know the net carb count of these recipes. Try "500 Low Carb Recipes" by Dana Carpenter it's excellent.
Rating: Summary: Amazing, revolutionary way of low-carb eating Review: I've been doing low-carb because I have insulin resistance issues. It's keeping my waistline down. But I thought I'd never be able to eat bread, pasta, and pizza again because of the potential health problems. Thank you, Eades and Solom! This book includes amazingly delicious and easy-to-prepare recipes that will keep my insulin in check and will keep me coming back for more. Yum!
Rating: Summary: The Best Collection of Low Carb Comfort Foods Review: If I only had one low carb cookbook, this would be the one (fortunately, I have many!) I've been cooking from a variety of low carb cookbooks, trying to find meals, snacks (especially snacks), desserts and other comfort foods that will please my family's palette while meeting my desire to eat fewer processed foods and fewer -- maybe no -- unhealthy foods (those I love and miss so much -- like donuts and white pasta, fresh baked breads and rolls -- I could go on and on!) The intent of this book isn't necessarily to give you all the low carb recipes you'll ever need, but to provide you with tasty substitutes for those foods you really miss so you won't fall of the low carb wagon. These are comfort foods, sorely needed by me and most of my low carb friends! A couple of the reviews I've read here seem to indicate the reviewers a) haven't used this cook book b) don't understand the logic behind low carb living or c) both. The Magic Rolls are terrific -- yes, they call for flour, but not unprocessed white flour. No, it doesn't use sugar at all. For recipes needing sugar, they suggest a well-known sugar substitute. The rolls came out fabulously; we have used them as rolls, bagel substitutes, hamburger rolls etc. All of the ingredients were found in a large chain grocery store here in Ohio. The preparation didn't take too much hard work, I made a lot and froze what wasn't devoured (only takes a microwave moment to warm them up from frozen). Why I love this book best -- I recognized many of their recipes, found (and used by me) scattered through other low carb books -- this one has all the ones I love tucked inside, plus more. And they have helpful low carb cooking information in the opening part of the book. They have info in every recipe showing how much carb and protein counts are in each serving. The authors focus on comfort foods (rolls, meatloaf, gravy, apple brown betty, now there's a meal I no longer need to miss!) along with simplicity -- these are foods you can cook for the family that don't require a gourmet kitchen, training, budget or lifestyle. There are also a lot of Italian and Mexican recipes, two of my family's favorites. I am suggesting this to all of my friends who are trying low carb, not no carb, eating because this has recipes that can help sustain a change to that lifestyle!
