Rating: Summary: Save it BEFORE or AFTER Review: I am writing from a different perspective than most of the reviewers. I am in my 70's and have been married for 36 years, so I know something about the pressures experienced in marriage. I also have a book store and have seen lots of books on marriage. I found this to be one of the best. The Parrotts have covered most of the problems a couple will face, and have given excellent help in solving these problems.I suppose the book has limited application to singles except as they are anticipating and preparing for life together as a married couple. The point is to be prepared for what you will face AFTER you are married. The last chapter may be offensive to some, but my personal experience says it is just as valid as the rest of the book. I'm not sure my marriage would have survived had it not been for our shared faith. At any rate, don't throw out the whole book just because you don't agree with a small part.
Rating: Summary: A "must read" for any single or married person Review: I found this book to be so informational in many aspects. It has helped me see many areas that I am responsible and accountable to God for in my responses and attitude. The various topics it covers in regard to marriage/communication are really great!
Rating: Summary: Practical Review: I just finished this book. I thought it was great! It contains very practical usefull information on 'real' realationships and how-to's. I did not however, as the title implies (saving your marriage BEFORE it starts), feel like most of the advise given was for pre-married people. As a Christian, some of the examples given, were not for someone in just a dating situation. I would love to read a book by the Parrotts that was exclusively for singles...
Rating: Summary: Loved the book Review: I really enjoyed the book. It helped me realize that the problems I was facing in my marriage were similar to the problems other couples face. I think this book will be very helpful for men. My fiance had tried to explain many of the topics in the book, but for some reason I failed to grasp her explanation until the book.
Rating: Summary: Want to stay married, do what the book says. Review: Marriages require a lot of work, but its not brain surgery. This book is short and explains in very understandable detail how to work your marriage out. It explained to me the less obvious, un-physical differences between a man and a woman. Then it tells you what to do about it. It's worked for me and I'm so glad my mom gave this to me before my marriage. Its absolutely great! Guaranteed results if applied. Just when you think you've heard it all, it tops off with the most important message of all-Putting Christ in your marriage-ch. 7. Thank you Parrotts! This is the easiest, most understandable marriage book out there. Good luck!
Rating: Summary: Definitely consider reading this book Review: My boyfriend and I found this book extremely beneficial and I would strongly recommend it as a guide to forming a strong relationship. Although the style of writing is a little corny, the information is accurate and gives you a chance examine your own relationship. You will appreciate the honest look at marriage leaving the sugar coating behind. Don't let the first chapter put you off, keep reading!
Rating: Summary: This book revolutionized my marriage Review: My husband and I have both been married before. We were looking hard for something to give us some Christian advice on how to have a good marriage with God in the center of it. This book really did wonders for us. Of course, you have to read it with an open mind, willing to make certain changes and see things from a different perspective. We have referred it to several of our friends who are getting married and even some who have been married a while and are having problems. We have even considered teaching a class at church on the book. It is a MUST for couples who want to understand their mate and try harder to sympathise with their thoughts and feelings.
Rating: Summary: A "Must Read" If Marriage Is Your Goal Review: My intended and I read this book on the recommendation of our premarital counselor. I'm glad we did. It really helps focus on the key elements needed for a successful marriage, and, in fact, has helped greatly in dealing with issues in our dating relationship. The final chapter is written, somewhat, from the Christian perspective but the basic point being made has application irrespective of the individual's spiritual background. The key to this "soul mate," chapter is the wisdom of choosing a mate with a compatable worldview that transcends the mundane value system of this world. I did not view this book as having a secret "Christian" agenda anymore than books written from a secular perspective have a hidden, non-spiritual agenda. I loved the book!
Rating: Summary: Misleading & Dissapointing Review: There is a lot of bubble gum phscyo babble that you have to wade through before you can actually get something out of the book. They could have made this book a 7 page pamphlet and sold it for 99 cents at 7-11. Also - the book is worthless unless you buy the workbooks. Of course, the workbooks don't come with the book and of course, they cost extra. I took the advice of another reviewer and found and read I Pledge You My Troth. Took some effort to find but well worth it. By far, the best literature I have found on Relationships and Marriage.
Rating: Summary: Good - with a hidden agenda Review: This book had a lot of good suggestions... I guess I should have seen the fine print, however... It was given the gold medallion book award for excellence in evangelical christian literature... I didn't know this when I bought it. In fact, I didn't know it until the last chapter when, though you may do everything in the book right, though you may ask the 7 questions and understand some of the things men and women do to mess up their relationships with one another, if you don't go to church together and if you aren't of the same religion, forget it! You can never be soul mates! This last part of the book left a bitter taste in my mouth and made me wish I had never bought it. And it was almost as if it had been hidden throughout the rest of book. If the book were clearly advertised as religiously motivated, people like me wouldn't buy it, and they couldn't sell as many copies.
