Rating: Summary: Sensitive, Inspiring and Heart-rendering Review: Reading "Finding Fish" puts me very much in mind of the books written by David Pelzer. Pelzer is not only my favourite author but the one person in the world I most admire and respect for his own personal trials and tribulations as an abused child, and his endless, dedicated work in the struggle to prevent child abuse. Antwone Fisher is a constant reminder that the social programs we have in place today are often failing the people who most need the support. In many cases, but certainly not all, there is not enough accountability by individuals who adminster and monitor social programs. It is unjust to lie blame or find fault with any one specific aspect. Perhaps part of the problem lies with current legislation and the limitations imposed, perhaps it is a matter of too many clients and insufficient resources to do proper monitoring. In any event, the story of Antwone Fisher is a story of someone who clearly slipped through the cracks. His hear-rendering story, his courage, his determination and his strong will to succeed, will touch the reader to the very core. Like many books of this nature, it is not an easy read, but one you will long remember after the final page has been read. Antwone Fisher, you are indeed a remarkable person and an inspiration to everyone whose heart you touch!
Rating: Summary: A survivor giving a voice to others who have suffered Review: Although Antwone is a personal friend of mine, I actually forgot I knew him while reading this book. It is beautifully written -- much like a fictional novel, with all of the twists & turns of a really good drama -- with a happy ending. I highly recommend this book for a rainy weekend or a relaxing day at the beach. Just remember to have Kleenex with you. The atrocities that Antwone suffered have been brought to the light in this book, making the rest of us more aware, empathetic and protective toward all of our children. I can't WAIT for the movie . . . most especially the soundtrack!! Congratulations, Antwone!
Rating: Summary: I was impressed by the man, himself Review: As an author, myself ("Orphan, A true story of Abandonment, Abuse and Redemption") and abused horribly as a child, in a Jacksonville, Florida orphanage. I can not tell you how impressed I am with Antwone Quenton, his book and what he has accomplished with his life as an individual. It is amazing how some of us can be treated in such a horrible manner, yet turn out to be kind-hearted individuals, while others turn on society, as well as on themselves. There are not very many books written today, about childhood abuse issues, that I would give a five star rating. This is one book that deserves a five star rating because the man deserves a ten star rating.Author, Roger Dean Kiser"Orphan, A true story of Abandonment, Abuse and Redemption","Heartwarmers","Heartwarmers of Love"
Rating: Summary: Transcending Review: What an inspiring book this was! It is so beautifully written and in spite of the horror of a childhood that Antwone Fisher suffered at the hands of the foster parents who mistreated him and the other foster children. The system needs real change. Nevertheless, I knew he was going to come out on top. He had such an indomitable spirit and such insight into his life. He came up with all those values from within his own soul. It made me want to cheer to see how happy his life is now. What a great book and what a great writer. What a wonderful human being.
Rating: Summary: Finding Fish Review: This story of triumph over circumstances is written with passion and skill, taking the reader to the events and making you feel as if you were there as it all happens. I felt as if I was part of the story experiencing the pain, suffering and joys of unfathomed success right along with Antwone. Reading this book makes one truly appreciate all the reasons to be grateful. I highly recommend this book for readers young and old.
Rating: Summary: Great read -- an important story Review: I bought the book because, like Antwone, I'm a Clevelander and a rough contemporary of his. However, I'm white, grew up in another (also working class) part of town and worked in Cleveland on the other side of the human service system. The times, places and even some of the people in the book were familiar to me. So were the circumstances. More importantly, this was a perspective I needed to see and think about once again. Antwone's story was riveting. It's also cautionary because he probably experienced more stability and attention in the "system" than it usually doles it. Antwone had gifts and talents and was fortunate enough to find them and still it was not "a wonderful life" ---- and those who wish to place greater limits on what we do for children cannot back away from that. People interested in the wellbeing of children and youth and should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: This book is amazing! Not only does it give the reader access into this existing world of injustice within foster homes and the social system, but it reminds you, the reader that fate is for real and that against all odds your path can change for the better. The voice of the writer is both real and honest and at times you may even feel as if you are reading Mr. Fisher's diary. An amazing story . . . a beautiful story and most of all, an inspiring story.
Rating: Summary: ...riveting Review: Fisher quickly draws you directly into the horror of his reality with his youthful and honest first person narrative. This page-turner satisfies all of the emotions and our intrinsic need for happy endings, at least for some. Thanks for the ride, Mr. Fisher.
Rating: Summary: Enthralling! Review: It is clear that Fisher is a master at handling hard to talk about/sensitive subject matter. I was pulled in from page one and couldn't put it down until the last word was read. I look forward to more of his work.
Rating: Summary: Spectualar Review: I would like to commend WHUR 96.3 in Washington, DC, for having Antwone Fisher as their studio guest. Like the host asked, "How could a young man have a memoir?". I wanted to know the answer to this question as well, so I took it upon myself to order this book the same day of the interview. "Finding Fish" had me so entranced that I could not put this book down or go about my daily routine without thinking about "Finding Fish". This book had me laughing, smiling, crying and aching for the things Mr. Fisher went through to accomplish things in life. After reading "Finding Fish", Mr. Fisher made me appreciate many things that I was subconsciously taking for granted. Good luck in your endeavors and may God continue to bless and keep you always!
