Rating: Summary: A real disappointment to a health care practitioner Review: I bought this book hoping for an interesting and not too challenging read for a long flight. I certainly got 'not too challenging.' Mr. West has got my respect for getting a quick trip to Hollywood. He certainly had Robin Williams in mind for the lead when he wrote the book. I feel like a fool for spending my hard earned cash on this nonsense. Not only transparent, but written like an amateur without an editor.
Rating: Summary: I really didn't like this book. Review: I cannot say how much I disliked this book. Not only did it seem completely made up, but the writing was extremely sophomoric. I'm sure someone out there has the same tale to tell and probably more experience in writing. The author seemed very narcissitic(i.e. constant descriptions of his cars and his clothes). The only reason why I kept reading was because I was hoping it would get better. I did, however, enjoy how he blamed his "personalities" for his extra-marital affairs. I really didn't care for this book. It didn't tell me anything interesting about DID that I didn't know already.
Rating: Summary: Dr. West provides an excellent first person account. Review: I read this book in two nights. I had a difficult time putting this book down. Dr. West shows us how his life and his family's life has changed through this experience. He is articulate and emotional. I immediately connected with this work.
Rating: Summary: A great way to explain DID Review: I didn't see Oprah, I didn't know this was a best seller. A friend found it and knowing that I live in a crowd sent it to me. This book is written to be readable and to show the humanity of DID to those who live other ways. It achieves that beautifully. Yes there are many details that make it read like a novel but what is wrong with that? All I know is that I and my crew related heavily to Cam and his guys and I thank him for writing it. I wouldn't mind people upon hearing my 'diagnosis' saying "like Cam West?" nearly as much as I hate "like sybil?". It showed the human side of living as many much better than most. I don't care if the truth has some fiction added to make the story and the people easier to understand and relate to. Anything that promotes more understanding of the 1.8% of the population with this deserves great accolades. I am unsure that the solutions for Cam are realistic for many but maybe thats why he is the writer and we are not. It was a much easier journey through the hell of this than most of us get but the essence of the book is the essence of DID.
Rating: Summary: Extremely easy read of a very difficult and troubling topic Review: This book read like a novel. It is extremely well written. The reader can't help but develop tremendous compassion for Dr. West and his family who prove to be courageous and very loving people. I admire the writer and his wife and wish them all the best.
Rating: Summary: Possibly one of the worst-written books I've ever read. Review: This is one of those books that makes you stare at the New York Times bestseller list and wonder how a book so badly written, so full of pseudo-science, so...lame, could possibly make the list. From the endless mentions of the brands of his and his wife's clothing to the excruciatingly purple prose to the oh-so-perfect cinematic unfolding of this story, this book was a disaster. A combination of Robert James Waller and John Gray.
Rating: Summary: A brilliant and courageous achievement. Review: I want to address my remarks to Cam and his guys and say above all else that I am deeply touched and filled with admiration for your courage to heal and to write about that process for the rest of us. What you have accomplished is nothing short of a brilliant feat and a triumph of your desire to transform your personal experience into a form which can benefit your fellow humans. As one who is entering a master's program in social work I find the description of your experience, especially what it feels like inside, to be invaluable. Your story adds a great deal to my breadth and depth of understanding about childhood abuse and the ensuing trauma. Another dimension for me has to do with the illustrations of your drawing and writing. I plan to also become qualified as an art therapist so these special illustrations are of great interest to me. Thank you. I finished reading the book last night and as I prepared for sleep I prayed for your continued healing...and that all of us will continue to heal our own lives and grow in understanding of others. Your contribution to this process means a lot, Cam. Love, prayers and best wishes to you, Rikki and Kyle (what a terrific wife and son!)
Rating: Summary: Great Book- sometimes graphic- but truly heart wrenching Review: I really enjoyed this book I would recommend it to anyone interested in Psychology, or DID. Cameron West went through a truly emotional ordeal and I think he did a good job of portraying it through his bio. Some descriptions of the abuse were very graphic- it was hard for me to fall asleep after reading a few chapters! Overall I think it's an excellent book that will move a person, and make a person realize how important childhood is everyones life.
Rating: Summary: Kind of boring Review: I found it difficult to get through this book not because of the subject matter but because it all seemed so unreal. A lot of it seemed fictionalized and at times exaggerated. For example, when Cam drives to a convenience store in California and he starts spacing out at the cliche tough guy clerk, he switches to another personality who is supposedly tougher than the clerk, and then, according to his account, the clerk backs down. I'm having a hard time believing that. I've seen this guy on TV, and even if he wanted to portray himself as Mr. Macho, I don't think he could. This book reads like fiction, so it's hard not to confuse this with fiction. With all the references he made to the movie "Sybill", I would have to say that the movie was much better at identifying and dealing with the issue of multiple personalities than this book was. It was much more interesting also. However, I do admire him for confronting this issue. If all this is true, he is a very brave man, and I hope it inspires others to confront their own demons.
Rating: Summary: As rich and bitter-sweet as dark chocolate. Review: Cameron has the most amazing way with words. I'm looking forward to his novel.
