Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Self Absorbed,,, Review: After reading "Operating Instructions" and "Traveling Mercies" by Anne Lamott, I find her a very funny and talented, but typically 1990's self-absorbed Bay Area writer. Further, as another reviewer above points out, she is quite tolerant of all types,,,,until she comes upon conservatives, of whom George Bush seems to be the evil archetype. There are good books lurking in both of these titles, but Ms Lamott can't quite get herself out of the way to let the books speak for themselves.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: if only.... Review: As a mother of two, including a son that is under one year of age, I could have enjoyed this book. However, I found the conservative bashing, especially the George Bush bashing, just too much to take. In fact, I put the book down in favor of another, and have yet to pick it up again. I can only think of maybe three other books in my 37 years that I have failed to finish!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: So this is why people want to become mothers! Review: I am six months pregnant with my first child and looking for books that will help me set my expectations for the upcoming year. My sister, a mother of an 18-month old, recommended _Operating Instructions_ by Annie Lamott. It beautifully balances the horrors of colic and sleep deprivation with the relief of a supportive extended community and the joys of mothering. Also, Lamott is a luminous writer; her story made both my husband and me laugh out loud and ache painfully many times--sometimes at the same time. She doesn't have to say that she wouldn't miss being a mother for the world; one can feel the reasons with each page.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Just like motherhood. Only funnier. Review: This book made me laugh out loud, cry like a baby, and kiss my son very, very gently as he slept. If you are about to be a mother, are already a mother, or even know a mother, you must read this book. Better yet, buy this for your mom on mother's day. It is glorious and maddening, exciting and embarassing and gut-wrenching to be a mom. And no one, ever, has told the truth like Ms. Lamott does.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This Is The BEST Baby Shower Gift for New Mothers Review: I buy this book for every new mother-to-be, and each mother-to-be has told me that it became a Bible of sorts for her during that first year of parenthood. These mothers (all 7 of them!) have, in turn, bought this book for other new mothers. It's that essential.Another book I would recommend is Harriet Lerner's "The Dance of Motherhood," but nothing comes close to "Operating Instructions" in capturing the poignant truth of becoming a mother for the first time.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A MUST READ for every new mom Review: OK, so they might not have a lot of time to read if they are REALLY NEW new moms. Give it to them, anyway. This is a MUST READ. Anne Lamott's journal of her son's first year will DEFINITELY make you feel better about your own parenting skills, even as you recoginze yourself in many of her adventures. She is laugh-out-loud funny at times, strikingly poignant at others. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have given it to every mom and mom-to-be that I know.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Crying, Laughing, and forcing it on everyone Review: i was "forced" to read this book for a University class. We had a week to read it, and i was finished in one night. i, myself, have no children, nor do i want any; however, this book touched me. i laughed out loud. i wept. i read it again. Only a few days after i read the novel, a friend of mine told me she was pregnant. She was scared and such, so i gave her the book. She loved it too. i have given this book to a number of people, and still read it myself. Ann is awesome at capturing life and showing truth. i, in fact, just sent a copy of this to another expecting friend. please read it-- just make sure you have Kleenex and someone to share it with. Thanks Ms. Lamott.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This One Gets Messy! Review: Boy, does Anne let it all hang out here! I love the way Anne draws us into the insanity of child-rearing, spotlighting the ugliness that rises within us, then dousing us with armloads of humor and grace. Just enough to make it through another day. My wife and I love our kids dearly, but this book made us laugh to the point of tears, thinking of some of the frustrations that we've gone through, and some of the weird things that our single friends must think we make up. This book refuses to back from any subject, no matter how emotionally, physically, or spiritually messy. If you like life in nice, palatable little doses that never make a mess, and if you like your reading the same way, you've come to the wrong place. Anne will leave you laughing, sniffling, jerking back in shock, then leaning in for a literary hug. This lady's good! So is the book! But it sure gets messy! Well--and I have a feeling Anne would back me up on this--that's life!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: you are not alone Review: This book was a life saver for me. I am the mother of a 5 month old wonderful and wonderfully colic-y son. Reading this book kept me sane for a little while. I highly encourage any new mother to read this and know she is not the only one.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A book you can't wait to share Review: Anne Lamott is so funny and brutally honest that I often found myself in tears of laughter while reading this book. I want to share this book with all the women and new parents I know. However, I'm going to have to buy them their own copies because I find I'm unwilling to give up my own.
