Rating: Summary: ***EXCELLENT!!!*** Review: I have never wanted to read a book as much as I wanted this one! My husband bought me "A Child Called It" for a gift and had to go out and get me this sequel immediately after. I have lent these books to everyone and they have all been equally as satisfied. We are all waiting for the release of "A Man Named Dave" to complete the story.
Rating: Summary: A young boy, who searches for a family and love. Review: This book, was one of the most outstanding books I have ever read. As David Pelzer, a young boy who has grown up with an abusive, alcoholic mother, searches to find a new family that will care for him and love him as well. David Pelzer enters many different foster homes, where he does not stay for long. A truly uplifting story which deeply touched my heart. As I read through this book, I realized what my life had offered me and how lucky I really was. A truly inspiring story and a sequel to "A Child Called IT" is a story you can not resist. Once you pick up the book, you will never want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: The saddest story on paper. Review: I thought that this story as well as the first story were both heart breaking and sickening. I was outraged at the thought of a mother even thinking of treating her son like that. No human should ever have to endure that kind of manipulation and suffering pain. I nearly cried the first time I read those books.
Rating: Summary: Captivating story of a child needing love and care Review: I was greatly moved by this childs horrible living situation. I too was an abused child but not at this level of torture. David's situation moved me so much to start looking at other children in my communtiy. David only lived 40 minutes away from me. It moves me to search for other children, to help them be loved. There is a special place in heaven for David, and his courage to move out and let others know, there are children suffering. David's book woke me up! I know that David was afraid of his mother, but I believe I would have stabbed my mother if she had treated me this way. It would be very hard for me to trust anyone, after this type of abuse.
Rating: Summary: I was heartbroken, and inspired, this is an eye opener. Review: I loved the book, and have also read, and loved, A Child Called It. This book made me cry, it made me angry, and it made me grateful for my parents, and my children. It also helped me to understand what some children may be going through that I deal with at the middle school where I work. I love working wih the children in the special education class that I assist in, and we have foster children in our class. This book has made me love, respect, and admire these wonderful children even more so than I did before. Time and again these children have amazed me with their kindness, and strength, but now more than ever. The only thing I was disappointed by was the fact the author didn't tell what his mother said to him when he asked her as an adult why she did those horrible things to him. I would have liked to have known her explanation, even though there was absolutely no excuse, I was left feeling angry yet again by her cruelty. He is one of the most admirable people I've ever heard of, and I commend him for his spirit, he truly is a Super-man!
Rating: Summary: Inspiring to those who have shared his shoes! Review: While reading through the life of David Pelzer, I found myself nodding my head "yes" time and time again... remembering my own families secrets and how the struggles of being a survivor, over a victim, were often difficult and confusing! I have read both "A Child Called IT" and "The Lost Boy".... looking forward to the next! David's story has been such an inspiriation to me, that I have dug out my own journals to begin a summary of my own life, and how this once "Lost Girl".... grew up and found herself to be one hell of a woman!! Thank you, David!!!
Rating: Summary: "A wonderful story of Triumph" Review: As a therapeutic foster parent for the last 9 years, I found this book to be some of the best material on the subject of child abuse that I have read. Some of the scenarios that were in the second book where Dave was in fostercare made me think of several of our past children we have had in our home. It is very sad for any child to have to go through the things that he went through--but to know that with the help of good fosterparents that truly loved him---he DID overcome. I only can hope that we have done and will continue to do as well of a job with our foster children. I loved both of these books and look at every bookstore I go in waiting for "A man called David". (Readers need to beware of the gruesome detail that you will come across)
Rating: Summary: So much strength in one little body! Review: As a social worker in today's society, I found this story was rivetting. Sometimes we all take so much for granted, to read what Dave went through, you should come to realize that the strength we need is within us. I've placed many children in foster care, and have always kept in mind some of the things Dave talks about in his book. But, to hear the depths of emotion of someone who has been through foster care, is something all of us Social Workers should hear. Too often our profession is misunderstood, I thank Dave for his inside insight into what we deal with everyday, and the strength these innocent, wonderful children have within them. I didn't want to put the book down, and read it in two sittings.
Rating: Summary: IT IS A BOOK THAT IS WELL WRITTEN Review: THIS BOOK OPENED UP MY EYES TO THE NEEDS OF FOSTER CHILDREN. I AM LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE GROWN UP IN A FAMILY THAT CARES FOR EVERYONE. MY PARENTS WERE THERE FOR ME. I GREW UP WITH A FOSTER SISTER WHOSE STILL VERY CLOSE TO MY FAMILY. I CAN RELATE TO DAVE IN SOME WAYS T OBECAUSE WHEN I WAS SEVEN OR EIGHT WE HAD A DIFFERENT FOSTER CHILD STAY WITH MY FAMILY WHO TRIED TO BRAKE MY TWIN SISTERS ARM. IT TAUGHT ME ALOT ABOUT THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM
Rating: Summary: One word: HEART-WARMING!! Review: I don't read very often, but I felt myself just having to read this piece by Dave Pelzer!! I just loved how he had the courage to overcome so much more, that many of us wouldn't have even been able to comprehend -- myself included! The kind of things that he went through in foster care was frightening! Not the treatment from his foster parents, but from others who were so close-minded that they couldn't even be considerate enough to let this "f-child" socialize with their precious children!! If you are the kind that cry for joy at movies like "Ghost", or "Hope Floats" -- and enjoyed them -- then this is a book for you!! It's well worth the small amount to make you realize how well you have it, or how bad another potentially wonderful person has it!! Please read this book -- you won't regret it!!
