Rating: Summary: This is a great book Review: An excellent source of information. Keep it handy for reference, as you will refer to it time and time again.
Rating: Summary: Beyond band aids and gimmicks, this gets at the root causes Review: What is there left to say after 90 reviews? Obviously, her approach works for a lot of folks. If you continue to buy organizer stuff and create filing systems and nothing seems to work for long, this book will show you why. And I thought I was just going to clean out some stuff! What I liked the most was that the author was not "born" organized, so it felt like a friend was helping me instead of an efficiency expert or neat freak lecturing to me. You aren't going to be asked to do things you hate (like throw everything out), and her approaches are very accepting and gentle. There aren't any rights or wrongs, and you will walk away with a very personal approach to organizing *your* life. Just make sure to read parts 1&2 first (please don't jump ahead).
Rating: Summary: Organizing from the Inside Out Review: I don't know if you can relate to this or not.... Deep down in my heart & soul I have always known that one of the keys to my success would come from organizing my life and making room for what is important! To me that is the stuff that cleanses your soul and allows you to cherish precious memories and creates warm nurturing environments, while we go about achieving what's necessary and important. Also, I think we all have longed for a workable and managable system that not only organizes our clutter, but free's our minds and creates space and manageability. Julie Morgenstern's wonderful book holds a promise that we ALL can organize our external clutter from working with our internal clutter! What a breakthrough and what a miracle it has created in my life! Her systems are not only workable, they are acheivable and maintainable ...I have never experienced this before despite repeated attempts at other systems! This book deserves more than 5 stars because it has outmanouvered every other unworkable organization and time management book I have attempted to use. (Despite serious investment & repeated attempts at other systems, which left me in a state of frenzy by trying to install new habits and eventually left in the same utter chaos some 2 months down the track!) Julie has taught me a way to organize my mind and life through an extension of my natural habits! What a concept! She also has given me a way to organize systemically using a wonderful model of the kindergarten. All great systems are based on modelling excellence and this one is an exceptional winner. I found her system well organized, grounded in experience, tested and easily adapted. If you like me believe that if life is worth living to the fullest, it is worth organizing..... than I suggest you order this book today! Congratulations Julie Morgenstern! (I am now devouring her Time Management from the Inside Out and also picked up her tape series, also another great investment in life!) Three months down the track and the energy in our house and our lives has transformed, we finally have time for what nurtures our souls! I can't recommend it enough!
Rating: Summary: Interesting, but it takes effort Review: The book is well written and holds good advice. However, it takes an effort and discipline to follow up with sorting and filing - and that turns out to be the major problem, even if all other challenges (storage, putting away stuff that is no longer needed) is mastered. It is a good guideline for people with new homes.
Rating: Summary: Results that stay with you! Review: Getting organized is easy. STAYING organized is difficult. This book will help you with the latter. Once I understood what was causing my disorganization problems, it was much easier to solve them. Morgenstern is the only professional organizer I know to address three very different causes of disorganization, technical errors, psychological obstacles, and external realities. Without addressing all three, it can be very difficult to _stay_ organized. It helps that Morgenstern's writing style is clear and to the point, with numerous examples to illustrate the important concepts. A nice surprise; I couldn't believe how FUN it was to apply Morgenstern's principles to my messy apartment, or how _proud_ I was of the solutions I came up with to solve them: my beloved coat hooks in the foyer and kitchen for example. Two years later, and I'm still organized, and still deriving pleasure from the decisions I made when I orginally read the book.
Rating: Summary: Totally Awesome book Review: This book starts out telling MY story about trying to "get organized." Well, it's really the author's story, but it could have been me. I was amazed to find her talking about the very problems I'd had. I've read the book and followed her suggestions and gotten clutter under control. I'm so glad I bought the book. It's marvelous to sit down at my desk to work and KNOW where everything is and where it's supposed to go when I'm done.
Rating: Summary: Stop, think, then create S.P.A.C.E. Review: I have read Julie's book, but have not yet put it to the test. In chapter 2, she talks about a type of obstacle called external realities. She happened to mention a few under the category of transition which apply to me: moving, graduating from school, and starting a job search. She suggests that we wait until we go through our transition before we begin to seriously organize our homes. Well, that makes sense to me. However, I really enjoyed reading through the book and getting ideas. I like the way she recommends that we take time to look at what's holding us back from getting organized (Ch. 2), taking stock at what's working (or not), answering why we want to get organized now (Ch. 3), and creating a plan of action (Ch. 4). Once we have done some thinking, reflecting, and planning, we are ready to attack (Ch. 5). She breaks down this action stage into five parts: 1. Sort 2. Purge 3. Assign a home 4. Containerize 5. Equalize The acronym for these steps is S.P.A.C.E. - easy to remember. She reminds us that the point is to be able to recognize what we love and what is working for us, and to expand on that. Organizing is not about getting rid of a bunch of stuff. After she explains what she means by these steps, the remainder of the chapters cover how to apply these steps to different work environments and rooms in your home. I enjoy a section in each chapter under purge which is called Julie's No-brainer Toss List. I plan to use these lists as I go through what I'd like to leave behind as I pack for my upcoming move. Julie includes a final chapter about managing time and technology. She suggests that once we have organized our spaces, we will find it much easier to manage how we spend our time. And of course, she also has a companion book on time management.
Rating: Summary: This book has been extremely helpful for me Review: I work at home (I'm a travel writer), and I feel like I never could escape all my "stuff". This book was an excellent way to think through how I wanted my life to be organized, plus excellent tips to get me there.
Rating: Summary: Good for a HOME OWNER Review: I really likes the ideas in this book though i must say it isn't very practicle for some one in a small apartment. I really thought it would be good for me. I will say, it has a lot of good websites listed.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book! A Bible for anyone that needs organization! Review: This book is a must have for all who stuggle and strive to organize. I read this book and applied it to my life and it has totally made the difference. I am much more organized because of this book. I was one of those people that had piles of clothes every where, stacks of paper here, little knick-knacks there, it just really got ridiculous. It got to the point where I couldn't think or breath. I dreaded going home. It sounds like I'm exaggerating, but my lack of organization began to consume my mind. So I am truly greatful for this book because not only does it tell you how to organize but it helps you to understand why YOU aren't organized. This book will help you to identify psychological and other reasons for your disorganization. So if you are tired of always trying to organize, never quite achieving the desired level of organization, read this book. It will truly help you.
