Summary: what's wrong with discipline???
Review: I think this is a crock!!! I have a child who can be defined as "spirited" (whoops, I just labeled her), but I want to know what kind of favor I'm doing her by falling over backwards to give her her way? There is no reason that ANY child cannot be taught to behave appropriately. This book suggests that there's nothing I can do to change my child, so I should just change everyone and everything else around her to accommodate her. I think I'll read The Omnipotent CHild, as suggested by other reviewers... Hopefully it'll teach how to help my child live in the real world and accept that it doesn't revolve around her! BTW, We know a family following the principles in this book and their son is an absolute monster!!! He demands what he wants when he wants it, and as a result of his mother making this happen, no one can stand to be around him!

Summary: The best child care book I've read
Review: I'm the mother of 3 girls, and this is the most useful book I've read. While some reviewers take issue with the methods Kurcinka advocates in dealing with the spirited child, I found it incredibly valuable just for the better attitude it gave me towards my daughter. Just to realize she wasn't the only child who threw fits about her socks was so helpful! I went from honestly not being able to enjoy much time with my daughter because of the constant screaming and drama, to being able to respond in a constructive way and eliminate many of the battles before they began. It got me looking at my daughter's behavior in a different, more positive way, and realizing that the point of being a parent isn't just to get your child to obey you, but to know how to avoid the conflict in the first place when you can!

Summary: I'm not alone! Finally, someone who understands!
Review: If you have a "spirited" child, this book is a MUST! It not only affirms that you're not crazy, it helps you to understand and deal with your child! DEFINITELY worth the money!

Summary: An excellent book for loving parents at wits end.
Review: If you need a new way of looking at your "problem child" Try seeing him as uniquely "spirited." Great insight into yourself, your problem solving skills, and the example you are passing on.

Summary: Excellent for understanding spirited/strong-willed child
Review: If your child is tedious, stubborn, persistent, full of chatter and ideas, and seems years beyond her actual age, then this book is for you! It is an excellent resource for understanding how to interact and bring out the best in your spirited child. It's a guide to treating your child like an intelligent person rather than crushing their spirit as some other parenting/"strong-willed" child books subtly imply. I also recommend Dr. Gary Chapman's "The Five Love Languages of Children".

Summary: A real eye-opener!
Review: My friends thought I was crazy when I would tell them that my sweet, quiet, focused child was "difficult"; I lay awake at night wondering how it was that she was so "intense". Why does she awaken numerous times a night? When I read the first chapter of this book, I burst into tears -- I finally saw that I was not crazy, but that she perceives and feels her world differently than I. I gained so much insight from this book, that I have read parts of it 2, even 3 times at various stages in our relationship -- a must have if you think you may have a "spirited child"!

Summary: Excellent, helpful, needed, timely.
Review: Self help, as a trend, is a sign of new openess to diversity. Everyone, on this planet should embrace it. It will benefit humanity. This book celebrates diversity. Every encouraging word, hint, suggestion and technique for raising spirited children is valid and helpful. But even beyond the realms of parenthood, this book will help many to help themselves, in ways never articulated before. No wonder this became a "bible" for so many readers. Indeed, diversity is sacred, and encouraging it godly.

Summary: This can change your life if you have a spirited child!
Review: This audiocassette has given me hope as a parent. If you have a spirited child (often called a difficult child in other books), you know that the average parenting classes, books, and advice from well-meaning friends and relatives just don't work. The author acknowledges our feelings of anger, frustration, fear, shame and embarrassment when we feel so inadequate as parents of spirited children. Then she gives clear, concise approaches and techniques that work with this type of child--along with the sage advice that "progress, not perfection is the goal." While all parents can benefit from the author's suggestions, those of us who live with the intensity of a spirited child will find the book a lifesaver. After a couple of years of frustration and despair, my husband and I (who listened to the tapes together) have found hope and excitement again about parenting our very spirited 5 year old.
