Rating: 4 stars
Summary: An excellent reference for the birder and nature lover.
Review: This book describes many good birding sites in NY state, giving directions on how to get there and rates the sites with 1 to 4 stars for each season.

The book does have a couple of drawbacks however. Most significant is that there is no index to where to find a particular bird, somewhat of a drawback for a birding guide, but there is an index to the sites.

There is an appendix showing the status of a number of species of birds within regions of the state, but the appendix is not comprehensive for some reason, ie it does not list northern goshawk, but the text states that the goshawk nests in the Adirondack. The index states that the gray partridge nests in the Adirondack, but I was unable to find mention of that bird in the text.

These failings aside, the book has much to recommend it especially for someone not familiar with NY state but wanting to know where to go to look for the Adirondack specialities but it requires a good deal of study because of the lack of index.
