Rating: Summary: A DREAM OF ISLANDS Review: This book is about a dream--a dream born of early manhood on a coastal headland in British Columbia. It is a reverie of pottering in a small sailboat to and among the numerous islands off the Victorian seaboard. The story begins with the author's discovery of the Caprice design and his construction of his boat from a bare fiberglass hull. Most of the book, however, is a series of vignettes of the author's sailing experiences both aboard his beloved GALADRIEL and ashore on "the magical labyrinth of islands that swarmed in treeclad myriads along the British Columbia coast." Teece has the rare ability to capture the ambiance of small boat cruising whether he is talking about the womb-like warmth of the cabin after a long day's sail, or describing the sights and sounds of the sea, the breath-taking beauty of the night skies, or the mystery and grandeur of the rocky islands he loves. His prose is clear, concise and remarkably descritive and his musings are both romantic and mystical. A DREAM OF ISLANDS conveys the charm and adventure of sailing simply in a small ship. Teece is also an accomplished artist and his woodcut-like pen-and-ink sketches illustrate the book. Highly recommended.
