Rating: Summary: easy set up Review: Nothing could be easier to set up than this remote and very easy to operate.Support is there with a phone call for missing codes, fully programmable and a learning remote as well. My main beef is this thing is a pig on batteries!Hyper sensitive for example while watching a movie the remote well turn on from the vibrations of the sub woofers and the remote is sitting on a pillow. If the remote is on a coffee table any one walks into the room the remote will turn on. While it is only on for 10 secs. it still is on and off constantly. Sent an e-mail to Universal Electronics on a way to reduce the sensitivity but received no responce, which I translate to meaning "not possible" Buyer beware and perhaps wait for the next model and perhaps this problem will be corrected.
Rating: Summary: 9...8..5... :) Makes it all better. Review: OK, before I even start to review this remote, let me re-iterate what the manual allows. You can dis-able the tilt switch which admittedly is too sensitive. By holding "setup" to go to programming, then hit "other" and then the magic 985 code. Hit Home to get back to regular mode and Voila! Now you won't set off the glow by breathing near it (yes, the Radio Shack version also does this).
That being done, this remote is great. I needed an all in one remote to control a Panasonic 50" LCD RPTV, a Scientific Atlanta 8000HD high def set top cable box with DVR, a Panasonic 5 disc DVD changer, and a Yamaha Receiver. Codes for all of them exist and for the functions that aren't there, the learning allows you to map buttons. I now have virtually everything at the touch of one remote. True, the macros may be limited compared to other remotes (The Harmony remotes come to mind) but I love the feel, look, and function of this one.
It works at nearly any angle, including 180 degrees opposite the device if there's a wall or couch or yourself to reflect back. Nothing beats sitting on the couch, and aiming at the ceiling and the signal still gets through. Someone stated that holding the volume or channel button down does not repeatedly send the signal. Mines does. Never saw a remote that didn't. You can adjust the length of the glow as well, just check the manual. Some people stated that the glow (default is 8 secs) is too short. You can set it to 4, 8, 12, 16, or 20 secs. All in the manual. You can also adjust the brightness of the glow as well.
The remote is thin, and has a very nice feel on the backside, like a Fountech Airstyle PS2 controller...very comfortable and grippy. The metal trim around the remote is classy and feels great too. It doesn't feel "cheap". The wow factor is high as well, as many people just look at the remote and say..where are the buttons? Once it starts glowing, their eyes light up! Granted, it has almost no tactile feedback (you can "feel" when you actually press something but it's not as tactile as a normal button, and if you were blindfolded, you'd have a tougher time), but I got used to it and pretty much can locate the major "buttons" such as Vol and channel without looking. They're right at start of the curve in the remote's shape and then the d-pad is right in the middle of the curve. (Note: The next gen Kameleon has raised trim around the main functions so you'll likely see that when it arrives in the US however, don't hold your breath as it'll likely be awhile).
4 AAA's give you power and if you disable the tilt switch (motion sensor), then you get just about as much battery life as any other remote. It has a JP1 port..sorta...lacking the pins, it has contacts that you must hold pins against. Makes no difference to me as I don't use it. Bottom line is that I found a great feeling, working, and great looking remote at less than half the cost of a Harmony remote that will control even my HD DVR (just map the buttons with learning). Power users with mucho devices and macro needs may want more but, you pay for that as well with higher priced remotes. Check out the pics I took too. I like it.
Rating: Summary: Disabling the auto-start Review: Radio Shack has their own version of this that I bought from them. That one had a way to disable the auto-on feature. I believe its called the "Tilt". Anyone annoyed with the remote turning on when you don't need to should look at that model. Disabling that feature means you have to press a key to turn it on. Must say this is the best remote ever, beats Sony's two hundred dollar remote hands-down!
Rating: Summary: Wake up!!!!! Review: Strengths: High cool factor with the digital ink display; good signal strength; feels good in the hand; displays current device with key animation; support for PVRs with dedicated device button; dedicated macro buttons. Weaknesses: Needs to be moved/shaken to activate the key display before you can press any buttons; lack of real buttons; position of VCR buttons at bottom makes them very difficult to use with one hand. I've owned it for 24 hours now and will likely return it. I'll admit I was taken with the cool factor but that it ultimately spelled its demise. I was also sold on the dedicated PVR device feature. The biggest problem is that the display is not active all the time so you need to shake the thing to wake it up before it will show you the button display and respond to button presses. This was the deal breaker for me. I often use my remote to watch PVR content and use the VCR buttons to scan/skip around content. With this remote, I might trigger a fast forward operation, the display goes to sleep, I find the spot I want to begin play at, I need to shake the thing to wake it up, slight delay, spot missed, flurry of button presses to finally stop the fast forward. Not good. It's the same with channel surfing. You have to wake it up every time you want to press a button unless it's within the eight seconds (or so) of awake time. Argh! As for general usability: it provides much of the same capabilities of other remotes from this (UEI) company's line of remotes. Learning from other remotes was no problem. I especially liked the fact that there's a dedicated PVR device button but it's really no different than using an AUX1 device button to control the PVR, it's just labelled correctly. So, buyer beware. If you aren't an intensive remote user and you like cool looking gadgets, then this might work for you. Otherwise, it's a pain to have to wake the thing up every time to press a button. Ugh.
Rating: Summary: FINALLY!!! a remote to replace 6 to have only 1 Review: The bottom line is this remote works extremely well and other should consider the Kameleon. Over several years I have played with many of the multi-device remotes so I can count on only one to operate the various electronic components. None the less you will find some that work with most but not all. The Kameleon has worked with all OUR devices even our digital cable box (General Insturment) from Cox Cable and our Pioneer Elite Home Theatre receiver VSX-24TX. Most common button are in plan site others are in a different location/name but if you are looking for a feature Kameleon has it but probably "hidden". Take for example the function button on the Pioneer to change where the signal comes from DVD>TV>VCR is the channel button, BUT IT IS THERE already programed. If not the Kameleon is very simple to copy the codes from another remote to a button. This is a keeper to us after testing out RCA, SONY, and Phillips remotes several years ago. If your looking this is one for You to test yourself. Also it is upgradeable over the phone (somehow).
Rating: Summary: excellent - especially compared to other similar products Review: This is a brilliant piece of kit. Some other reviews criticised battery life (use decent NiMh rechargeables) and having to 'shake' it to wake it up (you only have to look at it for this thing to wake up so this isn't a problem - I've yet to miss anything in FF mode except when I haven't been paying attention, and that happened with the original remote as well). The PVR functionality is excellent - at last something to control my Tivo properly. Basically it looks cool, works properly and is a fraction of the cost of other products with this level of functionality. Get some rechargeable batteries and give it a couple of weeks to adjust to using a multi device remote and you won't look back!
Rating: Summary: batteries, batteries, batteries... Review: This is a great remote, looks great, easy to use and easy to set up. Although, I have to say that if you are on a budget, as I am, the cost of batteries will really set you back. I purchased a 24pk of "d-cell" at a warehouse club for $16.00 and at 4 batteries a pop and the way this thing eats 'em, they have lasted about 2 months...I did the math and it looks like I will spend roughly $100.00/yr that is if I can always make it to the warehouse store. It might make a little more sense in the long run to spend a little more up front to save a little in the long run for a quality universal remote of a different brand/style. The touch screen is a huge benefit and works great. Like the other posters have stated, it is all too sensitive. Simply walk past it when it is sitting on a solid surface and it turns on; I think my cat turns it on while I am at work. If you were able to control the sensitivity of the "power switch", perhaps the battery performance might be improved. If it weren't for the battery life, I would give this item a 5 star rating, but since it costs so much to maintain it, it would get a big fat 0 stars if that were an option. So for us tree huggers and energy conservators, there might be a better option out there. If you find it, please let us know...
Rating: Summary: Finally! A Universal that works Review: This is the best home theater addition you could own! After trying several 'unviersal' remotes I had pretty much given up on finding one that works for less than $100. I have yet to find a remote that works with my Denon DVD player - but this wasn't a problem with this remote as I simply 'learned' the commands. The macros work great - one button and the tv turns on, amp turns on and switches to DVD digital, DVD player turns on and plays! Don't confuse this with the Kameleon at Radio Shack - this one is FAR FAR superior!!! (This has more (and more useful) screens for each device, and the Radio Shack wouldn't even learn commands for my DVD player.) Battery life is short with NiCD's but fine (5 weeks of frequent use) with NiMH's. Haven't bothered trying Alkaline batteries. Only downside is that it can be a little difficult to see in bright sunlight (but just changing the angle a bit works). I'm buying one for everyone in my family - I love love love it!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing-save yourself $50 Review: This is the only remote I have ever used that when you press Volume or Channel it does not continuously change...the volume changes only one step and you must press again. You must press for each channel! This is not the way remotes should work. Further, the codes for the Pioneer Amplifier did not work correctly. They can be re-programmed. I sent this back. If a remote cannot transmit multiple times when a button is held down, it is worthless to me.
Rating: Summary: Battery Hog Review: This remote is very cool and works on everything I have needed it to. It lives up to it's advertisement. But I have to replace the batteries once a month. VERY anoying!
