Rating: Summary: McWhorter's The People's Historian Review: When I was an undergraduate student a couple of years ago, a professor assigned historian Glenn Eskew's "But for Birmingham: The Local and National Movements in the Civil Rights Struggle." As I read McWhorter's disjointed tome, I realized that much of the historical narrative sounded very familiar. When I compared her book to Eskew's, I recognized more than just similarities--it seems she borrowed quite a bit from "But for Birmingham." McWhorter offers us nothing new, she is simply presenting the hard work of others as her own.
