Summary: A Woman's World
Review: "I loved A Woman's World! From the very first story, I had the feeling that I'd been waiting to read these women's tales for years. I also had the sense that I'd met these women before. I hadn't, of course, but as a woman and a traveler I felt an instant connection with them. What a rare pleasure." -Kimberly Brown, Travel Editor, Amazon.com

"Following Bond's assertion that 'women travel differently than men,' the pieces provide more than a sense of place. They offer inspiration and challenges by a whole range of women travelers throughout the world." -Transitions Abroad "A Woman's World is not just a book for 'Everywoman'.... It's also a book for 'Everyman.' It shows how women travel through the world and how the world relates to them."-New York Times

"Whether it's trekking through remote Bhutan, congregating at a well in Cameroon or piling into a mini van for an annual trip to an outlet mall in Eastern Tennessee, women approach travel with a unique sense of discovery and appreciation for other cultures. A Woman's World is another excellent addition to the Travelers' Tales series." -The Seattle Times

"A Woman's World not only gives us a special sense of place and a glimpse into the women traveling through it, but also insight into ourselves. The book is packed with stories of courage and confidence, independence and introspection; if they don't inspire you to pack your bags and set out into the world, I can't imagine what would." -Self Magazine

"A Woman's World is a wondrous journey into the heart of womanhood and a hard book to put down. I felt a true sisterhood with the writers as they shared their laughter and pain, and was awed by the adventures they chose to tackle. More than entertaining, this moving collection of personal tales is certain to encourage and inspire women in their search for the true meaning of life." -Shape Magazine

"Women do travel differently from men, and as I read A Woman's World I found myself admiring their insight, their determination and their courage. Marybeth Bond has put together a wonderful collection of stories that shape a fascinating perspective of women on the go and the places they visit." -The Miami Herald

Summary: Heading Off to the Wild Blue Yonder
Review: After having read numerous outstanding books from the "Travelers' Tales" series, I had extremely high expectations of "A Woman's World." Fortunately, this book may perhaps be the best one in the seies. It begins with an essay written by a woman travelling through India, and every other essay after that takes place in an equally exotic locale. Throughout the book the reader encounters various women who are involved in pursuits such as mountain climbing, fighting off unwanted men, mid-life crisises, and spiritual awakenings. The stories are written not only by professinal journalists and novelists, but also by the "average" woman.

Without a doubt, there is no shortage of variety in this book. It is an eclectic collection of moving essays that will inspire any woman to pack up her bags and head off to the wild blue yonder.

Summary: For the nervous dreamers
Review: Although I am sure if I am ever at the edge of the cliff, curve of the sea, rubble of the mountain, I will instantly die because I don't belive in gravity...I adored the women who wrote of those feats as well as those who leaped gracefully over cultural barriors to reach emotional contact. I loved this book. I wish I was adventurous, but that I wasn't didn't stop me reading out loud to my daugher of ten years, who I dream will grow without my fears. Thank you for beautiful stories. I love the fact that this book introduces me to numerous beautiful women writers I have not yet met. My thanks for the work and introductions.

Summary: Inspirational reading that can't be missed!
Review: As soon as I began reading this book, I was mentally packing my bags, planning my own trip. It's impossible to read this book and NOT feel the desire to walk in the footsteps of the wonderful women. They show that even the most 'normal' of holidays can be great holidays, and I cannot say enough praise about the women who have spectacular holidays in far off, exotic places. I recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!

Summary: You'll never be the same
Review: Because this book will inspire you to quit your life and take off. I read this book while living in Barcelona, Spain -- already an adventure in itself, however these stories inspired me to travel solo to Morocco where I had a life-changing experience. The stories are phenomenal -- I still think of some of them to this day.

Summary: Hokey and cliched.
Review: I bought this book to accompany me on a long trip, and wished I hadn't. The stories are very similar to each other, with platitudes of the 'my eyes met with the old woman in the rice paddy, and something wordless was exchanged' variety. I know there are better examples out there: why couldn't the editor find them?

Summary: Armchair Travel
Review: I cannot begin to describe the kind of armchair travel this book put me through. I felt like I was traveling places not knowing where I would end up next. At the turn of a page where would I land? It was sensational. I plan to read many more travel books because of this one. Because I am only thirteen I also plan to see where on this wonderful globe my heart takes me. It's because of this book that I have such hopes and dreams.

Summary: I want to take off on a journey now!!
Review: I just devoured these stories.. and the best part is that many of the stories are chapters from larger books by that particular author, so if your appetite is whetted, you can look for more by a fave (such as Robyn Davidson, Pam Houston, etc.). And then there are blurbs from yet other women travelers (such as Thalia Zapatos -- her book, "A Journey of One's Own" has several of her own travel essays).

I've ordered the "House on via Gambito" (another anthology of women's travel writings, edited by other than Ms. Bond). It has a lot to live up to, as I'll be comparing it to this book!

Summary: Armchair Travel
Review: I loved this book. I read the entire thing, cover to cover in two or three sittings, not just because it was entertaining, but also because it provides a rare insight into what it is really like OUT THERE (wherever that is) as a lone woman. I felt almost empowered, like I really could do it too! With practically every part of the world and every age woman represented in this book, I felt silly for thinking I couldn't travel alone. There isn't any sugar-coating or matronly advice...just enough experience to help make an informed decision or to calm the restlessness of a would-be traveler. Ms. Bond has put togehther an ideal balance of humor, truth, and insight to inspire me to get out the crumpled map and start thinking about going somewhere new. Alone.
