Rating: Summary: Interesting Review: This collection of essays by "the new generation of mothers" is an interesting and inspiring read. Stories of teen mothers, hippie mothers, gay mothers, infertile mothers, punk mothers, etc. shows the many forms "mother" can take. After reading "Breeder" the only question I have is what happens if you are a minivan driving soccer mom? Does that mean your not part of this new generation? DO you have to be an ex-punk, child-of-a-commune, lesbian to be a "new generation of mother"? One essay from a "main-stream mom" should not have been have been unheard of.
Rating: Summary: Sad and scary Review: This is not how I would imagine parenting to be. This is not what I would like to think parenting actually is. The stories were well-written enough, at least as much as one could expect from people who are obviously not writers by nature, but the stories they have to tell did not amuse me or wow me. Instead, I was left depressed and fearful about the current and next generation of children and parents. Oh, how I wish this book was fiction, the creation of a fertile mind rather than a series of fertile bodies.
Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE FOR PROGRESSIVE MOTHERS! Review: Truely a gem. Breeder opens up your eyes & shows you the way it is... straight up. This book will make you laugh, cry & grip your seat... Plus I am quoted in it! YAY!
Rating: Summary: Exemplifies the self-indulgent tripe genre. Review: Ugh. This book reads a bit like a little girl playing dress up, trying to sound much more important and all-grown than she really is. I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a lot of spare time to sit about the house and read; besides, I suspect that most of the gushing glowing reviews hail from the moms who post regularly at the site associated with the author.
Rating: Summary: Breeder is all you need! Review: Very rarely do I find a book that drew me in as much as Breeder did! I could not stop reading it. My favorite was Will. It was so beautifully written. My new hero is Ariel Gore!
Rating: Summary: The Coolest Present for Mom's Day Review: Well, it's awesome. I was hoping someone would buy a copy for Mother's Day but instead of waiting I had to go and get one myself. The two coolest things about this book are that it contains many different voices (cool thing number one!) yet each voice speaks the same language -- the language of individuality, repression, expression, desire, hope, fear, and cultural weirdness. These are mothers questioning their right to exist and their right to think. It seems they've answered themselves beautifully.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous book... Review: What a breath of fresh air... throw away your copy of "What to expect the first year," & GET this book now!
Rating: Summary: This book rocks! Review: wow, what was up with that publisher's weekly review? maybe they should have actual gen-x moms review books for gen-x moms, that'd be a start. personally, i could totally relate to these stories, and yes, i'm an actual gen-x mom. all the stories were good, and i especially liked allison's story. i could relate to allison being in denial about her pregnancy, because to me it was like entering an adult world i had rebelled against for most of my life. i wanted to be a mom, but i didn't want to lose who i was. plus, i didn't know any moms my own age who hadn't already given up who they were in order to become moms, bought the whole 'classic pooh' ensemble, etc., and become stepford moms. these stories definitely spoke to me, i wish the book hadn't ended. they made me feel normal, like i wasn't the only one with these crazy mixed up feelings and situations. they sounded like stories i could have written, or stories from people i know. rock on, breeders rule!!!!
Rating: Summary: Why is breeding glorified? Review: Yes, these are "real life" stories of motherhood rather than Hallmark fantasies. But why is birthing babies glorified? When there are literally millions of orphans in this world, what is so special about popping out another one? This seems like an irresponsible, selfish mindset.
