Rating: Summary: Better Than "Black Haze", but missing real stories like... Review: After my 2nd month on line, which included 1 month "underground," I one day woke up with an epiphany. As I changed the bandages on my ribs, I realized how absolutely stupid I'd have to be to ever want to turn to the people who inflicted that much violence on me and call them "Brother." I knew my history inside and out, I was loyal to a fault, and I still, in the name of "Brotherhood" had to endure whatever my line "brothers" endured at the hands of some pathetic individuals who called themselves "men." Fortunately for me, I dropped and never looked back. Today I'm a lawyer, husband, and father of two; never once having to wonder what "The Mysteries of Omega" would've offered me. What it GAVE me was a permanent sinus condition due to a broken nose, a bruised larynx from a punch to the throat, and the aforementioned cracked ribs.
The emphasis on academia? What a delightfully humorous and boldfaced lie. I know for a fact that 11 of my 14 line "brothers" had their transcripts doctored by an employee in the registrar's office; who also happened to be the wife of the frat's president. I'm confident ... make that positive ... that a simple comparison of that line's transcripts that were submitted to the National Chapter to the transcripts at the college would prove it.
Rename all Black Greek books in a truthful manner: "Black on Black Crime: The Black Greek Experience"
Rating: Summary: Insightful Review: I have not had the privelege of reading the book in its entirety, but the pieces I've read and the comments that i have heard about it have all been positive. Knowledge is power and educating ourselves is nothing less than empowerment. Also, alot of people have misconceptions of BGLOs (black greek letter organizations). Some people go round and round in circles using big fancy words just to come to the conclusion that BGLO's are gangs of immature monsters who thrive off of hazing. All I have to say is that each organization has chapters that are representations of the organization, but essentially are just part of the whole; therefore it is unfair to judge an organization by the actions of 1, 2, or how ever many chapters. Not all chapters are the same and not all greeks are the same. BGLOs do alot of positive whether you see it (hear or believe for that matter) or not, but that kind of stuff never makes the headlines...Does it? That's not up for discussion, is it?
Rating: Summary: Groundbreaking Material Review: I was very pleased to see Dr. Kimbrough's book on Black Greek organizations. I think that his research is ground breaking, but it is also just the tip of the iceberg as far as scholarly research on Black Greek organizations goes. Anyone who is a member of a Black Greek organization, considering membership, or acts in an advisory role to these organizations should read this book. It will provide a historical and cultural view into many of the traditions and customs of Black Greek life...but the story is also to be continued. Therefore, just as Dr. Kimbrough does in the conclusion of this text, I encourage researchers to continue to conduct scholarly research in this area.

Rating: Summary: Must Read!! Review: Not only does this book explain the history and progression of the African-American fraternal movement, but it sparks thoughts and ideas in the reader that will surely be an impetus for future research.
Rating: Summary: A bleak future Review: This book was written with great scholarship and sincerity. I would give five stars for that. The book lacks hope future for greek organizations. Hazing is that sour taste that has been in their mouths since their inception. Undergraduates are unwilling to part with the pledge process, committing a form of anarchy. The leadership unwilling to lay down the law on these underlings makes the fruit ripe for continued rebellion. In other words, you see the author struggle with reality here. He knows there is and never will be a middle ground in the pledge process. In other words, hazing among the intelligent, hopefuls of the future will continue. Some will come out OK! others will come out bruised and battered emotionally and physically. I say to greekdom, "Who is in control?" A bunch of "wet behind the ears" teenagers, or the placating adults on the mighty executive councils and graduate chapters of these organizations. We must all watch together as the deaths, maimings, comas, etc. continue. My concern is for the innocent souls who have no idea of what they are getting into.
Rating: Summary: Kimbrough Scores in Black Greeks 101 Review: This is a work for anyone who works with students on college campuses in the U.S.A. That includes parents, friends, deans, siblings. Walter's magnificent portrayal of the evolution of fraternities and sororities that were developed by blacks is solidly based on his research.
