Summary: Great story for kids and message for adults as well!
Review: Classic fantasy tale all children will enjoy. I recommend reading it to the kids, though, due to British lingo, and older writing style. Adults can relate creation of Narnia and morals contained in stories to Lewis' beliefs on Christianity as written in timeless religious classic Mere Christianity. Perfect gift

Summary: A classical series on the fantasy of childhood.
Review: This classic by the spiritual writer C. S. Lewis is a great collection for any children's library (and thier parents as well). The first book in this fantasy series explores a fantasy all children have: to explore and have adventure in another world in which they are the rulers. The entire series involves such moral themes as greed, gluttony, theft, and pride; encouraging one to follow the truth with is seen in the character Aslan, an anology to Christ. The text is not religious though, and can be enjoyed by anyone who has ever had an imagination or the desire to be the champion of one's own destiny

Summary: Unforgettable.
Review: I'm hesitant to write anything about these books at all. From all the commentary and from their popularity, I would say that it's more than obvious that Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" are not-to-be-missed. But, the fact that I am being given the opportunity to voice my own opinion about a series of tales that were an integral part of my childhood is too difficult to pass up. How many closets did I walk into, hands stretched out in front of me, waiting for the familiar feel of hangers and clothing to turn into the sharp prickle of pine needles? How many puddles did I jump into, hoping that I might be transported into another realm? And how many times did I look knowingly at the trees and animals in our backyard, thinking them very clever for hiding their ability to speak and reason? Not only were Lewis' "Chronicles.." excellent tales of magic and adventure, they presented me with a series of questions, puzzles and connections that initiated me into the wonderful realms of the written word, mythology, cultural studies, world religions, and wonder. I can remember spending hours at the public library, burrowed in reference books trying to learn about fauns, Bacchus, dryads, and the name Aslan. Each answer posted another question and before I knew it, at the age of 9, I was beginning to form a passion for knowledge that remains with me to this day. These are books for all ages, all beliefs. I think it a shame that any child might miss out on the extraordinary world of Narnia...or any adult for that matter. Do yourself a favor and take the time to read these books...whether it be for the first time or the hundredth

Summary: Great books -- but (please!) not a allegories
Review: It's not as though C. S. Lewis didn't know allegory. As a scholar, he was one of the greatest experts on the subject in this century, and several of his early works were written in that mode.

But "The Chronicles of Narnia" (and, for that matter, his untitled science-fiction trilogy for adults that begins with "Out of the Silent Planet") are not allegories, for allegory means the presentation of one thing under the guise of another, whereas the religious element in these books is (within their own fictional world) literal truth. In "Narnia", it is absolute factual identity, and not synbolism, that ties Aslan the lion to his equivalent in our world.

You might as well call "Ben-Hur" an allegory because it has Jesus in it.

I also must protest in the strongest terms to Amazon's ascription of authorship. I don't know who these Dillon people are -- illustrators, I suppose, but if so, they are not even the original illustrator. These books were written by C. S. Lewis, period.

But all that aside, I concur that "The Chronicles of Narnia" are works of great beauty, suitable for children, but also most suitable for adults. They are one of the best of what one might call the "intellectual and spiritual loofahs", just the thing to clean all the sweat and grime of present-day living off your mind and your soul.

Summary: Poor implementation of a great series of books.
Review: This audio compilation does NOT contain the full text of any of the original stories. It is massively abridged, and has lost all of the character development. While the readers' performances are excellent, their talents are largely wasted, as the stories thus abridged are rather lifeless. I bought this set for my blind wife, who fondly remembers the original stories from her childhood. She is disappointed with the set, and I consider it to have been a waste of money. Summary: Imagine if you had your own magical world...
Review: Imagine if you had your own magical world that you could visit whenever you wanted to...a world where you and your brothers and sisters were kings and queens...where creatures like naiads and dryads that you thought were only mythical really existed...C. S. Lewis chronicles the events of the Pevensie children as they step out of a wardrobe in the English countryside and into the mythical land of Narnia...a wonderful book for young readers, and older ones as well

Summary: This series is the best "children's" fantasy ever written.
Review: When I was young, I read the entire Chronicles of Narnia in one week. Each volume was intensely fascinating; every aspect of them I could read and actually feel a part of. I saw some of the obvious imagery: the personification of Christ and others, and realized that the message there was more than met the eye. Yet recently, I have discovered a new fascination. I read them all again, likewise in a week. Yet there was so much more there than I had previously thought. My recommendation: anyone who may have read these as a child, take the time to go back over them...it'll be worth it! It's not just a "children's" fantasy!
Favorite book: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Summary: Re-read an old favourite and enjoy the rest of the series
Review: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe beckon you to return to fond memories of Narnia and its inhabitants. Unexpected pleasures await as you turn to The Magician's Nephew and The Horse and His Boy, books you may not have read as a child, suffering from incomplete libraries or unable to bear parting from your familiar companion, Lucy.
Whether you read these books while snuggling beneath the covers or while hiding in the back of your closet, you will return to the land of magic and of power, the unforgettable land of Narnia.

Summary: Fantasy for Children of All ages.
Review: C.S. Lewis captures the hearts and minds of readers with his spellbinding accounts of adventures in the land of Narnia. Suitable for readers (and listeners) of all ages, Lewis's style will leave the reader longing for more. Excellent reading for preteen through adult, also for bed-time reading to younger children.

Each book is complete unto itself with it's own colorful world and amazing characters but is also connected to the others making a consistent whole. They are perfect read to children at bedtime and are bound to create a bond between parent and child as they share these beautiful tales
