Rating: Summary: Read 'em in a week! Review: You'll turn the pages so fast your hand might catch fire. My dad would read these books to me and my sister before our bedtimes as kids, but we only got as far as The Horse And His Boy. 10 years later, I picked up the books again and was shocked to find that I completed the whole series in a matter of 7 days. The books are timeless and are perfect for child and adult alike.
Rating: Summary: Uncover new treasures every time you read Review: After starting to read Mere Christianity which I never finished, I was completely enamored by this great man's wit and use of words. These books are not for children only, everyone can enjoy the rich adventures in Narnia!! I'm in the middle of my third reading of the set. An allegory of the a spiritual Christian life, please don't let that stop you from reading. Narnia is nothing of the dryness we find in church. As a purist, I disagree with the order that is listed on the books... read them as Lewis wrote them: The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe comes first. Other reviews give you the correct order so I won't duplicate here. To read as the publishers number them is to miss some of the surprises that come when you uncover secrets and mysteries. My personal favorite is A Horse and His Boy.
Rating: Summary: Commercialism to the Max Review: I bought these books to have something nice to read to my grandkids. I had to stop, however, because the books are nothing more than advertisments for "Turkish Delight," a candy popular in the U.K. The whole point of buying books for my grandkids was to give them a break from advertising, and here (throughout) are ads for this "Turkish Delight"! How much money is this Mr. Lewis getting from the Cadbury's chocolate company anyway? This man must be laughing to the bank!
Rating: Summary: A true classic Review: I just got this book in the mail today. I read the series as a child. The cover of the book is beautiful. It has wonder illustrations inside, including maps of Narnia. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Quite simply my favorite of all time. Review: Since childhood I have been an avid reader. I began the Chronicles about half way through elementary school but put them away somewhere around book three. I don't remember why exactly. I was enjoying them very much-- maybe the local library didn't have all the books. I became a Christian at the age of 15 and began reading Lewis' adult works-- his theology and philosophy books. When I entered seminary at the age of 21, I picked up the series again, re-reading all the books I had read and reading for the first time those I had not. I was utterly blown away. This series that had been my favorite when I was a child became my favorite when I was an adult. But of course Lewis had predicted as much at the outset, hadn't he? The Chronicles make up the best children's series every written--far surpassing Harry Potter. I give it five stars and only wish I could give it more. The symbolism is so deep and beautiful. These are books for the soul.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Except for the Order Review: Lewis is truly in his realm in the fantasy world of Narnia. You'll be amazed at how the wonder you experienced as a child will carry over into adulthood, as some of the more complicated symbolism becomes clearer and more powerful. Some may question the ordering of the stories in chronological order, but if this is not to your liking (and it is not to mine), then just be sure to check the dates and read them in the order published, starting with "The Lion, the With and the Wardrobe". And in addition to the great story, the illustrations are especially powerful and will further enjoyment of the youngest readers in your family.
Rating: Summary: Great gift... Review: I can't recommend a better gift for someone between the ages of 10-12. I got many of the books in the Chronicles when I was 10 and they really spurred my love for reading. I still re-read them sometimes. Years later, I found out the same was true for many of my friends. I just purchased a version for my 11 year old sister and she's already getting into them. The book is very nice, though I think The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe should be the first one in the book...that's the one that hooked me.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful and elegant edition of a timeless classic Review: If you have never read the seven books that make up THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, you have missed a universe of wonder, awe, danger, magic and, of course, good and evil. But here is your chance to begin an unforgettable journey (I absolutely remember how it was when I first read these books as a child) with a beautiful, elegant one-volume collection. At over 500 pages, it's no pocket novel, but the publishers and illustrator have done a first-rate job on this edition. And, of course, the stories are masterpieces and always will be. Even if you HAVE read the stories, this collection has its own spell of beauty; and what a great edition to use to read to kids! I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: These books are truly magical... Review: When I was a little girl I used to sometimes walk into my closet and just cross my fingers and hope there would be something other than clothes and the back of the closet in there.I love the stories and think they belong in anyone's library... from children to adults. They can be read as fairy tales, or as deep, introspective religious fables with a deeper meaning then most children will pick up on. But most importantly they are simply well written GOOD stories. I hope anyone who reads these and loves them will also watch the film, "Shadowlands." Starring Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis. It gives you a slightly deeper insight into the author's life.
Rating: Summary: Never too old! Review: I was first told about these books when I was in my early teens. Although I expected that I might be to old of them, I was strongly encouraged to give them a try. I am now reading them for a second time, and they are still just as magical! The Chronicles series reaches a high quality level that many children's series today simply do not reach. Although they are extremely entertaining page turners, they also stress the concepts of right and wrong in a way that is not preachy, but magical! The series actually starts with "The Magician's Nephew". This and the other books are full of magic, puzzles, moral lessons, and adventures! This book sets the stage and gives the reader the necessary background for the series, but it in itself is an entertaining story. To name a favorite book in this series would be impossible, like picking a favorite child! Each is magical in its own way. Unlike some series, "The Last Battle" as a final book provides a somewhat surprising yet basically satisfying ending to the series. Although you are sad the series is done, you feel rewarded for having read it! These books promote values that all children should learn! This series is an exciting gift for any child, or child at heart! If you missed these books in your childhood, don't hesitate to pick them up now.
