Rating: Summary: The book you should refer to daily Review: I use Word Smart about five times a week....and that is not enough! Here is a book that should be referred to daily, not just by students, but by anyone who wants to communicate more effectively or have a William F. Buckley vocabulary without reading five books a week. It also has enough room on the pages to add new words - in case 823 is not enough
Rating: Summary: don't even think twice - GET THESE BOOKS Review: I used these books when I was studying for the SATs years ago (I memorized ALL the words in BOTH books) and my score shot up 80 points to the 97th percentile in the verbal section. I am a teacher now and I use them inside my classroom and even as reference books at home. They are awesome because they not only provide you with solid, easy-to-understand definitions, but sentences that really give you a good understanding of the words. Even when I taught for Kaplan(SAT test prep) in college, I always secretly recommended these particular books to my students. Kaplan is good but these Princeton Review books are so far the best for vocabulary. Use them even if you're not preparing for the SATs... I hope this review helps. :)
Rating: Summary: great for SAT's! Review: i'm a high school student taking the SAT, and i bought this book after my friend (who got an 800 verbal score) recommended it. i've found it funny and bearable to read, unlike other SAT material. the layout isn't like a dictionary either... yeah, the words are in alphabetical order, but there are sentence examples (which are pretty funny) and occasional quizzes which make memorization and learning easier. of course JUST studying this book won't get you a good score on the SAT... that comes from being able to read well and a variety of other factors that have built up since childhood, but "word smart" is great for high school students who need a good brush-up for the SAT. i strongly recommend it! i've taken princeton review classes... they're all right... the techniques will only get you so many points, but they really know what vocab is tested most frequently.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Vocabulary Building Book Review: If you want to augment or ameliorate your vocabulary, you might want to study this book. I think that it is geared more towards high school students than adults, although the next WordSmart is suitablt for anyone.
Rating: Summary: Disappointment Review: If you're considering buying Word Smart + Grammer Smart the Compact Disc Audio Edition, I urge you to look else where for you vocab building needs. The quality of the definitions, illustrations, and word selection is second rate. Many of the words, such as anguish, are elementary. Anyone with good reading skills and experience should avoid this program.
Rating: Summary: Very Helpful for SAT's Review: If you're taking the SAT anytime soon, this book is for you. It helped me get a 800 Verbal score. It gives you many ways to memorize some difficult words. It is a lot more helpful than flashcards because it gives you sample sentences that not only show you how it's used in a sentence, but also helps you memorize them. If you take this book piece by piece (that is, read it a section at a time, making sure you have each and every word of the section down cold), your verbal score will increase. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book if you really want to improve your verbal SAT score.
Rating: Summary: Great book for GRE Review: It helped me preparing for the GRE. It covers about 20-30% of the vocabulary in the verbal section of the GRE. The author has a good sense of humor. The examples, quizzes and final exams are very helpful. They make memorizing a lot easier.
Rating: Summary: boost up your vocab!! effectively!!! Review: it's quite good,if you want to improve your vocabularies
and you don't have enough time to read many books daily.
and very helpful to make you understand new words by
given clear and concise sentences
Rating: Summary: An ideal book that gets you result Review: Not only does Word Smart boosts your SAT verbal scores, but it is useful in diverse ways. I am a freshmen in an international school, and not only did I get over 700 on a practice SAT I took, but also raised my grades in all courses that includes english. Most crucially, the sentences are very beneficial because you actually can emulate them and utilize the words in your OWN writing. Moreover, you often see them in prominent magazines such as: Newsweek and Times. You can see how it actually used in sentences and know it by heart. The [money] you spend on Word Smart will benefit you more than you can imagine
Rating: Summary: Very good book, especially for SAT test Review: Of the many vocabulary building books I have looked through, I find that this one stands out. It has a very good introduction, which gives some interesting information on the basics of vocabulary building. It is geared specifically towards doing well on the high school level SAT test and the words reflect that level.
