Rating: Summary: A good source of must-know words Review: As always Word Smart is a great way to study for the SAT, GRE, and standardized tests. These 800+ words not only help you do good on standardized tests but also enrich your vocabulary for everyday conversations. I especially found the pronunciation keys for every word very useful. It doesn't really make you look very smart if you mispronounce a word does it? I found it really funny that books never gave you pronunciations and was so pleased when I finally saw them in Word Smart. The sentence examples are also a great way to learn how to use these words and Adam's humor definitely shows up in some of them:) The word root list and GRE hit parade were also very helpful.I recently got a score of 700 on my verbal section of the SATs. A large part of the reason was Word Smart. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because I feel that you need to also purchase Word Smart II to get all the words that you absolutely need to know for the SATs. There are also some words in this book that are way too easy. Come on, ironic? Who doesn't know what that means. Otherwise this book is a must-buy for anyone taking the SATs.
Rating: Summary: Extremely helpful! Review: Getting a high score on the verbal portion of the SAT is truly simple with this book. After getting only a 640 on the PSAT verbal section, I prepared for about three months using this book and Word Smart II. I just took one of the tests included in 10 Real SATs and got a 770 on the verbal section! To prepare for the verbal portion I suggest reading all the sentences in the book that use the words in context, and make flash cards. Also, try to read as much as possible! Set aside an hour a day to read. Try to read the classics, which use many SAT-level words in context (look inside Barron's How to Prepare for the SAT. There is an extensive reading list. I highly suggest Charlotte Bronte's novels!) or quality magazines like Harper's or National Geographic.
Rating: Summary: GREAT AND CONVENIENT BUT DULL AND UNENCOURAGING Review: Great way to improve your vocabulary if you can't stand reading, but very uninteresting. It would be much better for you to read a book or magazine. If you really want to improve your vocabulary, for example, for the SAT, this book will work, but again, it would be better for you to read and look up words you don't know.

Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Review: I am studying for the GRE and before the tapes, I used several word lists etc. It was difficult to study that way. Now I just pop these tapes in my car on my way to work and on the way home and I'm entertained and learning at the same time! I've also come across many of these words in my practice exams! Well worth every penny!!
Rating: Summary: Ugh! Sophomoric. Review: I bought this book because I'm trying to develop a more mature, sophisticated vocabulary. I didn't realize this was a book for kids, or that it would be larded with juvenile humor. Ugh! What a disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Word Smart : Building an Educated Vocabulary (Princeton Revi Review: I bought this book for my daughter to improve her vocabulary, she enjoys it.
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Text Review: I have read many books throughout my life, but this by far has been the greatest and most helpful book I have EVER read. Mere words in this review can not begin to explain how immensely this book has affected my academic career. In high school, when I took the pre-SAT for the first time, I got a 340 on the verbal. YES, that's right! a 340! Since English is not my first language, my vocabulary was EXTREMELY limited. My goal was improvement, but knowing that I had read very little English when I was young, I had to figure out a QUICK way to raise my score. That's when I discovered Word Smart. After memorizing the definition of the words in this book, and many others, my score shot up to 710 on the verbal! Keep in mind I learned English in the third grade, but I still managed to score very high. Words in this book WILL appear on EVERY SAT and GRE, not to mention all major newspapers and books of ALL kind. You can count on that. After learning the words in this book, in a very twisted way I have yet to completely understand, my writing ability also dramatically improved. In conclusion, you are a COMPLETE FOOL if you take the SAT or the GRE without first extensively studying this book. Your future is very important, don't risk it.
