Summary: irresponsible.
Review: I used to read Shapiro's columns in the Daily Bruin, and this book follows the same pattern-- sneering, arrogant writing that doesn't really bother with "facts." It's all very well that he's got lots of footnotes-- if only they were accurate! He's obviously smart enough to know the difference between reporting facts and quotes and distorting/falsifying them-- and perhaps if his argument were stronger, he wouldn't have to resort to such exaggeration and distortion.

Summary: why bother?
Review: I remember when this little guy was still writing for the university newspaper. He couldn't get his facts straight then, so why should anything change?

Summary: Vanity Publishing
Review: An entertaining read, but not an intelligent one. For several years, Shapiro's student editorials were worth every read. His opinions are strong, facts be damned. In fact, he screwed up his facts so often that several of us in my office began keeping tally of how often he was refuted, and how often his response would be a print version of "Nuh-UH!"

This book is no exception to the Shapiro style. It's riddled with errors, misquotes and misinformation. But it will probably get him booked on Fox News and result in some pocket money -- and that's clearly his real goal in all this. The more outrageous he can be, the more earning potential -- facts be damned!

The only subject Shapiro is an expert in is crying out for attention. The only real question is who gave this guy the cash to publish his book?

Summary: Smart, accurate, and disturbing.
Review: As I read this book, I was struck by how little has changed since the early 90's, when I was a college student. However, it is encouraging to see that this very serious problem is getting some much needed attention. I hope this book does well and reaches a large audience, because things have to change in our universtities.

Naturally, liberals will dismiss this book, probably before even reading it, because they don't like Shapiro's politics. But anyone with an ounce of intellectual honesty will admit that there is no "free dissemination of myriad ideas" taking place when only far left views are being taught, and when conflicting viewpoints are being actively discouraged. This is called brainwashing. If liberal professors truly stand behind their ideals, then they will welcome a bit of scrutiny and diversity of opinion. The fact that they do not welcome diverse opinions only diminishes their credibility.

Summary: Superb explanation of what ails higher education
Review: This is an important book, perhaps the best book on higher education since Dinesh D'Souza's controversial bestseller, Illiberal Education. Using example after well-documented example, Ben Shapiro leaves little doubt that most elite universities today are bastions of liberalism. Though these universities herald "diversity" and "tolerance," they allow about as much debate as Russian gulags. It is a shame that so little has changed since D'Souza's book was published in 1990-91.

Summary: Great!
Review: One of the most intelligent books of our time. A definite must-read.

Summary: Ben Shapiro Rocks the House!
Review: It figures...liberals attempt to quash debate on an important issue by slandering a book they obviously haven't read. The fact that Ben Shapiro excites such vitriol from the "open minds" of the left can mean but one thing: This book is worth reading! Anything liberals hate is good! That, by the way, is a fundamental reality principle. Write it down and memorize it. Anywho, here's the truth, from a 56-year-old who's written 10 books himself (check out the Amazon reviews, if you need proof of this reviewer's credentials): "Brainwashed" is great, informative stuff. It's heavily factual, delightfully funny, and a devastating attack on America's socialist-run propaganda mills, also known as America's colleges and universities, especially those that are funded by taxpayers, most of whom would become libertarian tax refusers if they read Shapiro's book. Topic by topic, Shapiro addresses the issues of the day, explaining how each is twisted by a faculty dominated by people who hate America and all that it stands for and want to remake it in their own warped image. If these other liberal reviewers don't like Shapiro, that's their business, but to sabotage the reviewing system is the act of an intellectual midget. In fact, after reading Shapiro's book, I'd be not the least bit surprised to discover that the one-star reviews contained herein weren't submitted by nervous "America is the Great Satan" professors attempting to do on Amazon.com what they do on campus: to wit, brainwash. I sense that big things are to come from this young man. Keep an eye on him. He rocks!

Summary: Is the author BRAINWASHED?
Review: Unfortunately, the option of zero stars was not available for this book. This is conservative reactivism at its worst. The author obviously misunderstood the purpose of a university education. The point of higher education is to open your eyes, not to further close them to the possibility of new ideas. Coming from the MECCA of campus "liberalism," Berkeley, the leftist exterior is a faccade for latent conservatism.

Summary: "Quick! Shoot the messenger!!"
Review: Some of the best endorsements for this book are right here in the amazon review list. "A reader from Washington" says that "Shapiro is too young, too naive, and too biased to serve up anything other than this precooked, sweeping indictment of American universities." Cripes. This kind of factless attack on the author instead of the idea is a perfect example of the theme and message chronicled in Brainwashed. The reviewer(s) displays precisely the snobbery, elitism and distain for diversity of thought that Brainwashed argues is abound in the countries institutions of higher learning.

The more you hear people crying about what an ignorant loser the author is, the more you get a hint of the kind of waves the book makes. It takes the old "colleges are liberally biased" axiom and spanks it in an entertaining and interesting way that obviously pisses a lot of people off! Highly recommended. A good read.
