Rating: Summary: So True Review: Things are actually so bad that it's very difficult to debate this issue with leftists. Most college students who didn't have a strong affiliation one way or the other before going to college have no idea that what they are fed is political propaganda. They view challengers of orthodoxy as ill-educated, bitter outcasts, and can't bring themselves to consider opposing views seriously. At the same time, they keep parroting vacuously about open-mindedness and tolerance, which is equated with holding liberal views.
Rating: Summary: Dogma and Womyn at UCLA Review: Of course, Ben is right. Yet predictably, the campus protesters (and their off campus ilk) who support professorial fascism are here in droves to try to shout down 'Brainwashed' -- and not aware that they are helping to prove his point.
But the beauty of the left is that for all of their institutional strangleholds (Academia, Hollywood, mainstream media), they don't always win. Given this triad of influential societal perches, it's amazing there is still something of a 50-50% ideological split in this country.
The environments in which conservatives flourish happen to be in places that, in contrast to the left, encourage free exchange of ideas. AM talk radio and the Internet in the last decade have provided powerful alternative platforms for the Ben Shapiro of the country to test their ideas. (Where there's a will, there's a way!) And, when the left attempts to enter the fray (Air America, anyone?) they fall flat on their faces.
This is not to say that the left is inherently weak at defending their ideas. But as long as those places that the left controls takes on a totalitarian posture, and propagate free speech-stifling political correctness, her adherents will not develop the rhetorical skills or debating muscles to further the cause.
Honest leftists, and there are some (Paglia and Hitchens come to mind), should take Shapiro's critique to heart. Ironically, it may actually help them in the long run.
Rating: Summary: UCLA & IVY BASHING PAYS UCLA UNDERGAD'S WAY TO HARVARD Review: Shapiro bashes UCLA as liberal and the Ivy League as elitist--via a rightwing watchdog publisher. Shapiro, a former UCLA undergrad, and the publisher both cash in--chapeau. He now goes to Harvard Law, and they have a bestseller.Shapiro paints the devil on the wall (i.e. environmentalists, atheists, feminists, ... ); thus it will sell well with those to whom it was catered, i.e. those that sympathize or look up to a president who claims to hear the voice God. In brief: another, though relatively minor, neo-CON JOB, and somehow reminiscent of Buckley Jr.'s "God and Man at Yale", though much less eloquently written, and rehashed with present-day issues. By the way, in regards to credence of such arguments: How many GOPher presidential candidates have been elected since 1951, when "God and Man at Yale" was first published? And that with all those liberal and Ivy colleges turning out supposedly liberal (under-) grads?
Rating: Summary: Tired Argument, No More True for the Repetition Review: Right-wing pundits have been writing versions of this book for decades (see HARVARD HATES AMERICA and GOD AND MAN AT YALE for two early examples). The basic facts of American political life disprove the argument. More and more Americans go to college. Yet America becomes more and more conservative. Young people in particular are becoming both less politically engaged and more Republican in their voting habits. Where's the indoctrination? If there was a concerted, academia-wide effort to brainwash America's youth, it's been an abject failure. What drives books like this -- as many reviews here suggest -- is that a lot of people (in this case people on the right, but the same is true of many people on the left and in the center) can't stand to hear folks who disagree with them. We live in a media environment in which it is ever easier to simply tune out dissenting opinions. College, at least when it's done right, ought to expose people to diverse viewpoints. Some folks (left, right, and center) don't like this about it. Most university faculties feature a wide variety of political viewpoints. But for folks who know they're right, this is a terrible thing. Note how many positive reviews dwell on the mere existence of one or two liberal or leftwing faculty whose classes the unfortunate reviewer had the misfortune to attend. Luckily (?) the reviewers seem to have survived the brainwashing. How about passing the time with a little solitaire?
Rating: Summary: My College Unique? Review: I am currently attending a top liberal arts college and find this book's premise to be ludicris. Our political science department is in fact dominated by neoconservatives who discriminate against liberals -- students and prospective professors. The student body is conservative, has their views reinforced in classes, and supports President Bush. The right needs to realize they're being paranoid, selective, and incoherent. Pick any college and you will find a bias one way or another - it is a matter of fact that like minds congregate together.
Rating: Summary: This is so true! Every parent & student needs to read this. Review: Finally!! A young person with a brain that understands what the liberal universities and professors are doing to our kids. Very well done! This is so true that Barnes and Noble won't even sell this book, but Amazon.com does. This is so true, but for some reason is allowed to continue all over our country. Most alarming is this is not just Democrats on the Left, but those even more Left than that are brainwashing our kids!!!
Rating: Summary: yup Review: As a college student at a large state university, I can attest that the authors is right in his accusation. We are constantly told to be "open minded", but then we have ultra-liberalism and moral relativism shoved down our throat. Its even so bad that leftist propaganda is being taught is history classes.
Rating: Summary: Finally another side to the story Review: This is one eye opening read. I encourage everyone who is, or is going to be in college to get this book. This is the truth being exposed, and as everyone knows, liberals hate the truth! To verify the complete bias of the one star reviewers, and to see just how credible their arguments are, just look above each of those reviews and see how many of each review readers found that particular review to be useful. Compare the one star reviews to the five star reviews in this regard, and you'll see who has the valid point!
Rating: Summary: Good bite to liberals! Review: The book is a must read for every student in the U.S. Great!!!
Rating: Summary: Finally, this subject in print. Review: So nice to see this subject in print, and selling well. I do remember my first real college class, Philosophy. BEFORE the first class even started, the teacher, while discussing politics with classmates had called George H. Bush a couple of four-letter words and asked during class if anyone wanted to sign-up with her for the next election to help get "the ***hole out of office". She also added a discussion on homosexuality (after her girlfriend came in to deliver something and gave her a kiss) and asked how many of us wanted to try it. She also stated that those who said they didn't were only fooling themselves and would "come around" soon enough. At the time, this did not bother me, as I considered myself a liberal, it was my first class, and I knew no better. Now that I am older and think back, I can give you 100 examples of this, with no examples on the other side of the political aisle. Remember, this was my very first college class ever. Imagine what came later. Those of the left call the right close-minded while they are the ones preaching and those on the right feel that everyone should make up their own mind and don't inject their beliefs, or are afraid to for fear of punishment. I guess the old saying holds true: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." An interesting read, but nothing more than an affirmation of what I experienced.
