Summary: Read it and think for yourself
Review: a review of some reviewers here:

I love it when those with socialist (and/or neo-marxist) political philosophy cover up their poor arguments (and continued failed political ideology) with overemotional and intellectual bankrupt language (about as bankrupt as those countries who follow their ideal leftist political philosophy).

Its not surprising to see many (biased from the start) reviews jump on the "Ann Coulter lied" bandwagon yet provide little-to-no evidence to back it up (it might even sound familiar to those of you who actually read the book).

A review of the book:

Ann is a polarizing personality and like it or not she gets her point across. While many on the political left would like to see her "blacklisted" ( like she's not already in some cases) she is very opinionated an does a very good job (most of the time) reinforcing her opinion with fact.

The political left continues to use McCarthy as the reason why "anti-Americanism" is really the only true form "patriotism". This blatant inconsistency with genuine patriots of American history just reinforces the fact that most liberal ideology is rarely reinforced with facts but they replace facts with name-calling and overemotional terminology. These very same people who tend to blame the USA for every ill and sin throughout the world are the same ones who want to increase the size of the government (the very same government they hate- so go figure) through intrusive socialist programs through increased taxation or by reducing our military and/or security.

The following were all identified as Soviet spies in Venona under President Franklin Roosevelt (to name just a few):

Alger Hiss- Assistant to the secretary of state

Harry Dexter White- assistant secretary of the treasury

Duncan Lee- Chief of staff to the head of office of the Strategic Services (precursor to CIA)

The fact remains that McCarthy was right back then and would would be today if he pointed out how many within the political left (and media elite) still "blindly" defend and support those with "anti-American" treason-like political ideology while they try to masquerade it as "true-patriotism".

While this book is not perfect it is a well written and well documented and reveals the fallacious anti-McCarthism ideology that still unfortunately plagues many within the democratic party.

I personally think "few" liberals or democrats are genuinely "anti-American" but I think most people who are on the political-left are unknowingly supporting and defending those who are.

Summary: You'll either REALLY love it, or REALLY hate it!
Review: If you're a conservative, you'll rave over this book. If you're a liberal, you'll no doubt denounce it.

The book is of course, typical Ann Coulter-style: an in-your-face, no-holds-barred, usually invective attack on liberalism. At times it's best to have a pocket dictionary handy--she uses some obscure words sometimes!

The point of the book is twofold: First, Coulter discusses the "controversy" surrounding Joseph McCarthy. To any objective reader, I think she (and her sources) pretty well settles the discussion: McCarthy WAS right in his accusations, and the Democrats/liberals of that era were harboring Communists in the top levels of the federal government.

Then Coulter goes on to compare that era to what's going on today in the war against terrorism. Reading her comparison, it seems at times that nothing has changed except we're now fighting Muslim extremists instead of communists. The tactics and motives of the far left seem to be the same: Lie repetitously until the public begins to believe it, and launch ad hominem attacks to divert public attention from the issues.

Interestingly, I browsed a few reviews before writing my own, and, with only a few exceptions, no one attempted to challenge Coulter's facts; rather, they chose to launch the typical ad hominem attack in a feeble attempt to thwart logic. Oh well. . .

My only beef with the book was that I wish she would have devoted more time to discussing the deep motivations behind liberalism. Not all liberals are treasonous, and I don't think even Coulter herself believes that. The vast majority of liberals who hold power in our government are indeed treasonous because they are traitors; the rest of the liberals in this country have to have a different motivation--albeit misguided--probably caused in part by the fact that government schools have taught them WHAT to think, not HOW to think. Very sad.

Summary: ...at least she's selling lots of books...
Review: This book...what can I say? Unsourced quotes given as fact, a very hard US vs. THEM mentality...what happened to "fair and balanced" to quote Bill O'Rielly? And Treason? That's a captial offense with the death penality waiting...does the author really believe far left liberals deserve death because they don't agree with her point of view? And as for her point of view being discussed as "in point of fact" I can only say, she got me to buy her book, but what a disappointment. I won't buy any of her other works - she comes across as fanatical and histrionic. If I want to listen to that, I could go to the She-Woman Man Haters Club disguised as the local feminist organization Empowerment of Women Now. The purpose of a book is to inform and entertain...unfortunately, her information is suspect at best, and as for entertaining? This was an extremely booring effort - a poorly disguised harangue that puts to mind "screeching". The only positive I can see for my dollars...she ain't bad looking. I would recommend other works before wasting my money here.

Summary: An interesting read
Review: This book is generally very interesting, revealing the tendency of the American left to be disloyal to America. Many were traitors, but most were just the "blame America first" crowd. I see it in some of my leftist friends. They hold America to a perfect standard while giving the benefit of the doubt to Islamofascists, Communists, and deviants of every stripe.

Particularly interesting was her conclusion, namely, that liberals despise religion because they have forsaken "the imitation of Christ" for being God. Actually Ann missed a historical connection here. Bertrand Russell, himself somewhat a man of the left, in his History of Western Philosophy says the same thing of the Romantics. The point that would have been the crowning jewel of Ann's exposition is that modern American liberalism IS the child of Romanticism. The connections are deep and explain the left's winking at totalitarianism, its obcession with feelings and against reason, its fascination with the social sciences (perhaps invented by Rouseau), and its intolerance toward Christianity.

My one problem with the book is that sometimes Ann substitutes sarcasm for substance. But, in general, this detracts only slightly from the generally sound theses of the book.

This book may be the best selling political book of the year, certainly eclipsing Hillary's "Living Herstory (as a radical feminist would no doubt call it) and Al Franken's BIG LIE. It deserves this distinction.

Summary: Warning: Ann Coulter lies frequently
Review: I read all of Coulter's previous book, "Slander: Liberal Lies about the American Right" (yes...every single page), and this book appears to be even worse, if that is really possible. Her way of thinking is vividly described in George Orwell's great essay "Notes on Nationalism" (which can be found at p. 365 of Volume Three of the four volume Collected Works). Orwell's psychological profile of a "nationalist" obviously matches Coulter's outlook very well (obsession -- never writing about anything else except what will add to the power of their "power unit", constant efforts to rewrite the past, flagrant dishonesty...etc...).
As an example of her dishonesty, here is a totally false claim she makes on page 229 of this book. On this page she stuffs these bizarre words into the mouth of Bill Clinton: "They have good reason to hate us...after all, we sent the Crusaders to try to conquer them". I did a Lexis search using "all dates", for all areas of the US, thereby searching all of the 500 most-read US newspapers for all dates since Clinton became newsworthy (around 1991). I used the search expression "Clinton AND Crusaders". I also tried "Clinton AND conquer". Neither search found any article in the Lexis Nexis database, which really proves Clinton never said these words (or...at least...it proves that Coulter is the only source of the quote). If Coulter is the only source, how could that be? That seems impossible, doesn't it? If it is a real quote -- not something she made up -- wouldn't she want readers to be able to see it for themselves? The lack of a source makes it appear made up...why would she want that appearance if it is true? Why needlessly undermine her own credibility by giving no source for such a "juicy" defamatory claim? Why this, when, if it is really true, it would powerfully serve to ruin the reputation of the primary target of all her writings? Note: the first of her three books targeted the Clinton administration almost exclusively!
Such lies are UNAMERICAN, ruining our democracy. America should be about promoting fair elections and free speech and the wonderful human rights that should be guaranteed to all US citizens by our constitution. Having leaders elected by fair elections is a bacic human right. False accusations like Coulter's destroy's our democracy, which requires accurately informed voters.

Summary: Nice try, Ann
Review: Ann Coulter is a polemicist, which means she tries to persuade, not to educate or inform. As such, she can stretch the truth a bit to underscore her arguments, so I won't complain too much about her factual inaccuracies here.

However, the polemic fails miserably. She argues that the only possible reason a person might object to an American war is love of the enemy.

There is no room in Coulter's narrow world view for conscientious objection. No understanding that someone might oppose a war because the cost in American lives is too great, or because the war is morally misguided. No, in her mind, no one can oppose a war for any reason except the desire for the enemy to win.

Further, she argues, because some Democrats have opposed wars, all liberals are treasonous.

There is more, of course. She doesn't focus just on the anti-war elements, but the underlying flawed logic is always the same: any opposition to hawkish conservatism, and the policies that come with it, is motivated by love for Communists or Islamic extremists (no other possible reasons accepted) and therefore, treason.

This would be a satire worthy of Swift if I didn't believe Coulter believes and means every word of it. That makes it just scary. My one comfort is knowing that this book is so ridiculous and extreme that the only people who will believe its thesis are people who already believed it.

And yes, I did read it.

Summary: Communists will love this book.
Review: Communists will love this book, because it uses the same rhetorical tactics: Take no prisoners! The book views people with different points as view as a vile enemy.
A scary work.
I really disliked it.
A final prediction: in a few years, the author with experience a political conversion of sorts, denoucing these very views that have generated such fame and lucre.

Summary: Ann Coulter, not up to par on this one
Review: With yet another book out with the tag line of "it's all the liberals fault", this one does not seem up to par with other political science books.

This new book talks about how Joeseph McCarthy is a great American Hero, and whenever someone calls a liberal's patriotism into question, they scream "McCarthyism!" She goes on to site sources that in the midst of the communist witch hunts of the 50s, McCarthy did find one or two that did turn out to be communists. Which seems to miss the whole point of the First Amendment, but that is of course totally ignored.

As a student of political science, it seems folly to place the blame of the ills of society in just one camp. Rather, both sides are to blame for one thing or another. This book seems to show that instead of research and facts, she sticks to her usual conservative rhetoric that can be heard in any Rupert Murdoch controlled media.

my favorite bit is on the last page when she says "the difference between liberals and conservatives is that conservatives think that they were created in the image of God, and liberals think that they are God... They enjoy pornography and the mechanization of sex..." Seems there are too many crazed liberal sex robots out there for her taste.

Bottom line is that her "facts" are actually slewn together and not researched well enough for her to be taken seriously. If one were to take at look at her 780 endnotes (which she has called footnotes, but are actually endnotes) and you will find an astonishing array of misquotes and ill-researched fodder. If she honestly wants to be taken seriously, she needs to work harder at research and facts, and not blame EVERYTHING on the liberals. The "it's-all-your-fault" argument doesn't hold up outside of grade school.

Summary: Open Your Mind and Read This Gem
Review: Ann Coulter is brilliant. No one has ever taken on liberalism's holy grail like she did in this book; the trashing of a great American; Sen. Joe McCarthy. Even JFK and RFK had tremendous respect for this hero. Thank you Ann Coulter for having the guts to expose the myth surrounding the whole notion of "McCarthyism".
