Rating: Summary: Coulter re-writes it like it wasn't. Review: Having gone through the book and all of it's sources thus far I can only say that it is a poor example of an attempt at revisionist history at best and a asthetically caustic and socially deleterious work of fiction at worst. Coulter, though her new book, in the same breath condemns history for not having been bent to her extreme and alarming perspective as she becomes a parody of herself with such exaggerated chicken-little claims of treachery. It's worth glancing over in the bookstore to prove my point, but not much else.
Rating: Summary: Worthless Review: I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said about this ridiculous book. I do want to stress, however, what a previous poster suggested, and that is to go to the spinsanity.com web site. Please, all you five-star reviewers, ready Brendan Nyhan's devastating review, and perhaps some of you will be smart enough to post a retraction.
Rating: Summary: Vile, Traitorous, Deceitful People Review: There are some people in this country who are clearly un-American. They obviously hate America and the principles at the heart of this great nation. They will stop at nothing in their attempts to smear and defame those who understand what makes America truly great. Those people are lunatic extremists like Ann Coulter. She recently named J Edgar Hoover and Richard Nixon to a list of 5 people from the 20th century who most protected freedom. The same J Edgar Hoover who illegally and secretly spied on an American Hero like Martin Luther King Jr in efforts to smear him. The same Richard Nixon who had to resign the Presidency following the discovery of how his hired goons had attempted to steal from and bug offices of the opposition political party--a tactic better suited to the Saddam Husseins, Josef Stalins and Mussolinis of the world. Coulter's latest anti-American screed suffers from numerous faults--among them laziness and deception. For instance, she repeatedly writes things like "According to the NY Times," or "As the Washington Post reported" when in fact she is quoting from COLUMNISTS in those papers. A person could gather quotes from conservative columnist William Safire--whose columns appear in the NYTimes--and claim the NYTimes is frothing at the mouth with right-wing radicalism. That would be sloppy, dishonest and untrue. And that is what Ann Coulter does. She also just does not know basic facts. On page 51 she writes about Afghanistan and the Taliban during the 1980s; the Taliban did not form until 1994. On 229 she quotes Bill Clinton saying something ridiculous with no attribution; a lexis-nexis search shows no such quote exists. The distortions and lies go on and on. Don't insult your intelligence--or your country--by reading this thoroughly insipid, false and anti-American book.
Rating: Summary: Facts or Fiction? MEIN KAMPF for the GOP! Review: After reading this book I went from being an Independent to a Democrat. Don't waste your time!
Rating: Summary: Conservatives should be better than this. Review: I'll start by saying this: I am a lifelong Republican, conservative, and church-going Christian. A friend gave me thins book for my birthday last week. I have not read any other of Coulter's book and I only read the first 50 pages of this book (with some skimming of the rest). I can agree with many things Coulter has to say about liberals. I believe they are seriously wrong on many issues, especially the size and obligations of government. This book, however, made me ill. Thoughtful conservatives ought to denounce this sort of naming calling at the top of their lungs. I come from a liberal family and while I disagree strongly with them, they love this country as much as I do. Treason is a serious charge and it's a disgrace to conservatives to see one of our own use it so callously. If this is the public face of conservative thought in this country, I'm embarrassed.
Rating: Summary: Treason is Beyond Reason Review: The 5-star people point to the "Facts" in this purposely inflamatory assault on anyone who disagrees with Ms. Coulter. The facts are, of course, selected, sifted, bent, and editorialized by Coulter. My real problem with this whole mess of a book is her view that basically half of this country has been and is treasonous simply for being politically left (whatever that means) leaning. She can't be serious and I suspect she isn't...she hopes to ride the current crest of conservatism to sell more books. Fortunately, for the vast majority of Americans, we are on to her, and her book and views will propel the steady decline of this radical right carping. After seeing her on TV news magazines and reading this hogwash I do think she is off her rocker. Just plain nuts as they say. Psst, Catherine...our country was founded on and propered by the basic right to debate and have differing opinions...that does not make anyone a traitor. It makes them a patriot. She will sell some books, and then in few years fade away I'm sure.
Rating: Summary: Please! Look up the documentation! It's important! Review: The fact that so many people are giving this book 5 stars and praising its "facts" and documentation is downright scary! Check out these "facts" before you believe them! To get started, go to Spinsanity.org, a non-partisan site that exposes deceptive statements from BOTH sides. (They hit Michael Moore just as hard as Ann Coulter.) It is amazing how often a mis-statement is made, the media quotes itself repeatedly until before long, it becomes accepted wisdom. I believe most conservatives are thinking people who want to know the truth. I hope I am right!
Rating: Summary: The Right's ... Review: ...P>Coulter's revisionist history of the McCarthy era is quite telling. Never mind that innocent people had their lives and career destroyed by McCartthy's ultimately self promoting grandstanding and never mind that it was the REPUBLICAN party that eventually censured him -- not the Democrats that Coulter so enjoys painting with one sweeping broad brush as pinko lefties. But in Coulterland one should never let the facts get in the way of the bucks one can rake in by catering to the lowest common denominator. I'll give her this. Coulter knows her audience and knows just the kind of red meat that will get them marching into bookstores (where they no doubt are shocked to see that there are so many different kinds of books for sale) but ultimately this is not a compliment. Pity she can't, or won't, take the opportunity to enlighten them rather than just pandering and feeding their fear and ignorance over some vast, left wing conspiracy.
Rating: Summary: Classic rhetorical pseudo-science... Review: Ann Coulter's TREASON is one long revisionist diatribe, no different from any other extremist work of persuasive literature in the guise of an academic treatise. Think about why Jerry Springer has an audience and you've grasped the fundamental clockworks behind what Ann is up to here. Anyone can write a book and pass it off as scientific by slapping references at the back (fragile, uneducated minds simply LOVE bulging indexes and footnote sections as a way to say "see, this book backs up what it has to say!"). Nothing wrong with writing a book based on your "researched" opinions, but a word to the wise: any book that spouts generalizations like "the left is out to DESTROY the country" should give you great pause. That kind of impassioned rhetoric belongs in an op-ed, sure, but not in a scientific document. In short, if you're a conservative looking for a back-clapping highly emotional pep talk, pick this one up. If you're a scholar looking for a carefully researched emotionally neutral perspective, complete avoidance is strongly recommended.
Rating: Summary: "You can't handle the truth" Review: What's so very funny about all the "one-starred" reviews from whiny liberals who obviously didn't read the book, is that they have no answer to Ann's central premise. That, when Soviet files became public in the last 10 years or so, it showed that McCarthy was mostly correct!!! That Soviet spys HAD infiltrated the US government in shockingly high levels. That Roosevelt and Truman (among others) did everything they could to shelter them. And that the liberal press (NY Times, etc) practically buried the story of the Soviet files. Call Ms. Coulter every vile name in the book. Question her motives. But, you can't or won't offer up a suitable arguement that McCarthy didn't due the country a great service by trying to root out communism from the US political hierarchy.
