Summary: There Is So Much More To This Story
Review: Ann Coulter offers an important insight into her thought process when she writes, "Liberals choose Man. Conservatives choose God." Oh, now I get it. To disagree with Coulter is to disagree with God! If you convince yourself that you are the Lord's instrument, then that rationalizes any smear, distortion or transgression on your part. The end justifies the means, right? That goes a long way to explaining how the "conservative" movement runs more and more amok with each passing year.

No review of TREASON is complete without mentioning those darlings Senator Joe McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover and Roy Cohn. Sorry to spoil the party, but McCarthy is not vindicated by the fact that there were Communists in the State Department. For McCarthy to announce in West Virginia in 1950 that he had a "list" of "known Communists" in the State Department (most historians believe he was waving blank paper in the air) was about as helpful as a US Senator announcing today that there are "known terrorists" in the Sunni triangle. Tell us something we didn't know. To praise McCarthy for being "anti-Communist" is about as myopic as praising Al Sharpton for being "anti-racist." There have got to be leaders more credible than that.

Would McCarthy necessarily be considered a conservative by the standards of today's Dixie-dominated GOP? The question is more than academic, because it goes to the heart of Coulter's case. Michael Lind's book VIETNAM: THE NECESSARY WAR places Vietnam in its Cold War context. In doing so, he discusses McCarthyism at some length. Conservative southerners and career military people might want to pay close attention to this.

Lind writes: "The legacy of Greater New England isolationism [or Northern liberal isolationism] explains the curious fact that William Langer, a progressive Republican senator from North Dakota, opposed the censure [of McCarthy] and the fact that McCarthy was admired by Robert LaFollette's son Phillip." Robert LaFollette had been a liberal Republican senator from Wisconsin who supported the New Deal in domestic politics but resisted Roosevelt's interventionist foreign policy. He was a forerunner of Senator George McGovern in both respects.

Continuing: "[McCarthy's] hatred and suspicion of U.S. national security agencies resonated with many left-of-center progressive isolationists in Wisconsin and surrounding states....it is no accident that the same region produced both McCarthy, determined to expose alleged Communist subversion of U.S. national security agencies in the 1950s, and [the liberal Democrat senator] Frank Church, determined to expose the alleged immorality of the CIA in the 1970s. Both McCarthy and Church must be placed in the context of two centuries of Greater New England opposition to standing armies and the national security state."

Finally: "[I]t was the Wisconsonian McCarthy's attack on the Virginia-bred General George Marshall and the largely southern U.S. Army that led to his downfall at the hands of the Southern-dominated U.S. Congress."

The case can be made that McCarthy was more in the tradition of today's paleoconservatives like Pat Buchanan, who did not want to wage war in Iraq, than of the neoconservatives in the Bush administration who had been looking for any excuse to overthrow Saddam Hussein since long before 9/11. Interestingly, Coulter doesn't have much to say about the paleocons. But aren't they "treasonous" too?

Perhaps it's understandable that a full moon Republican like Coulter would attempt to rehabilitate McCarthy, but J. Edgar Hoover? Conservatives, I thought, were tough on crime. Hoover was to blame for allowing organized crime to spread like a fungus from the 1920s to the 1970s. Don't take my word for it. Peter Maas was an authority on the history of the Italian-American mafia. In UNDERBOSS, his biography of Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, he describes Hoover's lame policy: "[The problem] was largely due to a mindset...dating back to the number crunching days of J. Edgar Hoover and his use of statistics to get the large congressional appropriations he wanted. Quantity, not quality, was what mattered [to Hoover]....There was little interest in long-term investigations aimed at the organized crime hierarchy, where only a handful of convictions, no matter how important, might be obtained." Later, Maas quotes Sammy himself: "[T]he FBI, when you go back to Hoover, would not recognize there was a mob. He wouldn't let agents go after the mob when they wanted to."

Wait, it gets stranger than that. Gravano's boss, John Gotti, was represented in a murder case in 1973 by none other than McCarthy's former counsel, Roy Cohn. Cohn secured a sweetheart plea bargain for Gotti -- three years for participating in shooting a guy's brains across a barroom floor. In the late 1970s Cohn represented Steven Rubell, the tax-dodging, coke-snorting co-owner of the infamous Studio 54 nightclub in Manhattan. Coulter mentions none of these details. Yet imagine how she would rant if, say, Senator J. William Fulbright's counsel had a similar track record in private practice.

Let's hope God is not too upset at this review.

Summary: Bleach Blond Opinions
Review: Ann Coulter has clearly figured out that she can earn her crust by espousing unsupported and outlandish opinions to attract attention. That is once again apparent in this book. The book does have some amusement value as a cynical and bizarre fantasy, but, even so, unless you share her predispositions, you will find that most of the book is complete tripe. If you do share her predispositions, you will not be challenged by anything that this sad woman has to say. Let's hope she finds something more useful to do with her life.

Summary: Read a book by a real Republican instead
Review: Do you want to read a real book by a real Republican? Try instead:
Ronald Reagan: An American Life
by Ronald Reagan
Or maybe a book about the greatest Republican of our age? Try:
EISENHOWER
by Stephen E. Ambrose

You see these men didn't rant and froth and embarrass our cause. These were people for who spoke about the strengths of their ideas, rather than attack others as un-American.

I've voted Republican my whole life. My first vote was for Ike and against Adli Stephenson. But you will never hear me condemn Stephenson. Instead I will praise his strengths (like how he deftly outmaneuvered the Soviets again and again in the UN during the Cuban Missile Crisis). I would never vote for him, but neither will I insult his good name, for he did good service for his country.

You see Liberals and Democrats are not the enemy (and we are not their enemy). They are Americans with whom we may enjoy a debate with at the barber shop, or over a beer after work. Our politics may be different in many ways, but when did politics really matter? Do you care if the man who puts out your house fire voted for Jimmy Carter? Do you care if your Doctor admires Richard Nixon? No. You care about things that matter like character, honesty, and ability.

Politics is a side show in life. On the left and the right, people are being more polarized by the pundits on each side who search for more searing terms to deride each other. And here on Amazon people wasting the precious time of their lives slamming and praising these same worthless airbags of the left and right, instead of getting on with their lives.

Do yourself a favor. Stop typing your attack or glorification of this over-hyped lawyer, turn off the computer, and go see what is really happening in the world. It's a lot better than you think.

Summary: One-sided and self-righteous
Review: Ann Coulter has continued the process of re-writing history that conservatives seem to revel in. Her books are inaccurate, and one-sided. She continually takes quotes out of context, and spends most of the book pushing the 'buttons' she knows will raise the ire of conssrvatives, purely to sell more books it seems.
And after raving for too many pages about liberal treachery, nowhere does she mention small infractions like Iran-Contra, which was a much more serious attack on our Constitution than anything in her book, but since it was Reagan's administration she ignores it ( I'm sure she probably thinks that subverting the balance of power provided for in the Constitution by having representatives of the Executive Branch wage their own private war in Nicaragua without the approval of Congress was a fine, uplifing, moral thing to do...)
All in all - bad writing, bad (read - no)research, just another typical treatise by the dumbest of he dumb blond conservatives (dumber even than Dan Quayle)

Summary: Is she an imbecile or just an in it for the money loser?
Review: Let me make it clear that you're a fool if you call me a traitor or say I am responsible for this widely touted by radical conservatives who clain to be devoted patriots and just know it will happen real soon destruction of the USA, simply because I call myself a liberal, demand that democracy apply to ALL our citizens, and support maintaining our Constitutional rights. And yes dammit, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and proud of it! Aren't you? Everybody who values our Constitution is already a member or should get busy and join.

If she'd put her efforts into doing something beneficial, I wouldn't have to call her a worthless twit. I'll bet she doesn't support our Constitution since she claims that the ACLU is part of the "Ewwwu (this will make me rich) Conspiracy".

Some people should learn to keep their mouths, or in this case their laptops, closed.

Summary: Hot!
Review: If this book were written by a man, I'd give it 1 star (ha). The omissions are absolutely horrible, creating a deceptive picture of major figures in modern US history. Either Coulter is dishonest, or has a sever blind spot due to ideological adherance, or was on some type of manic flight... like Kramer in Seinfeld after he got a lifetime supply of hard coffee. Half-jokingly ("joking on the square" for Franken fans), if you've seen Coulter on TV she seems manic in her speed of speech and impatience (which may be to cut others short because she doesn't know her facts well... or that blind ideological adherance again). She is also thin and physically pulsing. In short, Coulter is fiercely attractive. Physically, energetically, and as a personality, she has "something." Reading Treason with her mental picture, the book is enjoyable... as a maniacal rant that represents a chaotic but explosive linear energy. Treason is fun to read... if not a reliable source with balance (So what, read Time, Newsweek, and The Nation too). Well, Treason is not balanced within itself -- but it does balance against lefty books. I'm listening to a Kylie Minogue cd as I write -- it sounds good partly because she's on the cd cover, creating a great mental picture. This book is the same -- Coulter's image and energy come through the crazy, dangerous words. Read with strong coffee (or Red Bull) to get on Coulter's wavelength, and enjoy! (For context, I also like Bowling for Columbine and Franken, and anything that's entertaining. If there's someone Coulter-esque on the left, I'd love to see - and read - it). Peace out!

Summary: I've been to war with mean she would call 'traitors'
Review: I tried to read this book while I was recovering from heart surgery. I had to stop because she was making my blood pressure rise. Why? Because as a Korean war vet who actually lived through the Cold War I know what she does not. And I won't allow some idiot who has never so much as seen a battle to run her mouth about things she knows nothing about.

Coulter: don't condemn men to war so flippantly you weasel!! Until you have the guts to go to war yourself, keep your trap closed. Heck by your own standard Ike committed treason by allowing the Russians to take Berlin and by signing a truce with North Korea! Are you telling me that you (Coulter) are a better American than Ike?? That will be the day!

Reading her book I could see the faces of men I fought with who left their blood on hills she will never see. War is no game of foreign policy, and treason is not a word to toss about lightly. I fought with men who democrats, men who were republicans and (mostly) men who didn't care. I dare her to use the word treason in the same sentence as anyone of them. Coulter is the kind of person who wants to tear this country apart by making it about "us" and "them". As if politics matter more than the soul of the person.

Well I fought, was wounded, and fought again, not for damn political cause, but for the United States of America, and for the Republic for which is stands. When Coulter truly understands those words she can write a book. When she truly understands that the real difference between people is not what party they belong to, but how they treat their family, friends, and neighbors - then she will begin to understand what life is really about.

Until then tell that lawyer to go back to the hole she crawled out of.

Summary: Most profound book of the past 50 years
Review: (I especially recommend the book on CD. I've listened to it a dozen times.)

I cannot profess to be widely read in all matters of politics and modern history, but I found Ann Coulter's book "Treason" to be one of the most significant popular works to be publish in the past century. She chronicles the nearly successful communist takeover of the U.S. government from the 40's through the 80's until Reagan broke down the Soviet Union and accelerated the collapse of communism around the world. While soviet spys may be gone from government, their fingerprints and influence are still lingering in editorial rooms of major media and the halls of universities in the U.S. and around the world.

I bought the book expecting the delicious sarcasm I so enjoyed in Ann's other book "Slander". While the humor was still there. The tone was far more sober as the subject required.

During a 20 hour road trip in a snow storm I listened to the book on CD twice. I was saddened when I learned how Liberals tried to destroy Whitaker Chambers. I wanted to cry when Liberals managed to kill Joseph McCarthy before he turned 50. I got angry when I learned how Watergate was used to destroy Nixon as payback for exposing communists and convicting Alger Hiss. I cheered when she recounted how Reagan beat communism from our shores and weakened them around the world. When Reagan eventually passes from this life Liberals will unleashed such assault upon his memory that hell cannot even conceive of.

After 60 years of liberal hegemony, truly patriotic writers and speakers like Ann Coulter are begining to undo the lies of the elite and rewrite modern history in the vein of truth.

Buy this book for your friends and family. Better yet, pay them to read it or listen to the audio version. It could be one of the best things you ever do for them.

Summary: Ann Coulter is my hero !!!
Review: I've read all three of Ms. Coulter's books, and admire her intelligence and spirit. This book by far is her best, and I have recommended it to everyone I know.

I wish more Americans realized how treacherous the liberal agenda is for America. This book spells it out so that even the likes of Janeane and Barbra can understand it.
