Rating: Summary: Wonderful for those just learning Review: I have this book, and I read it constantly. Even though the other book's cover is almost pristine, I'm buying it again is because of the picture on the front cover. I have always enjoyed this author's method of writing--nothing flowery and complicated. Just simple, straightforward magick. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Young Solitary Review: This book was surprisingly thorough, with oulines on the histoy of wicca, basic sabbat rituals, easy spells, runes, and tools of the craft, plus much more. There's even a list of uselful publications at the back, like newsletters etc. and also occult and metaphysical stores, although most of them are in the US so it's not very useful for people who live in other countries. Other than that the information is perfect for the novice Wicca.
Rating: Summary: The best guide for any Wiccan Practitioner Review: If you are a Wiccan, or curious about the religion, or just like to read a good book with wonderful information in it, then Wicca by Scott Cunningham is a must buy. This is definately the best beginning book for any one who is serious about the Craft. He clearly gives detailed facts about how to become more spiritual with the God/Goddess, how to celebrate the Sabbats (holy days of Wicca), and how to cast circles and call the quarters. In his Book of Shadows, which is the third part of this book, he clearly explains what tools to use in rituals and how to use them. And of course, there's a list of prayers, blessings, invocations, and chants that well serve you well as it did me. I found myself after reading this book, and practicing his suggested magick, to take more pride in my religion and become more closer with the Lord and Lady. I was also able to finally dismiss my worries I had about converting to Wicca after many years going to a Catholic school. This books also contains a variety of recipes for making incense, oils, foods, etc. Buy and read this book to understand why Scott Cunningham is one of the best Wiccan teachers this generation has ever had.
Rating: Summary: Great reference Review: Coming from near zero it would be hard for me to compare books for quality. However this one hit the spot for me. I needed a good overview. You can not be a live and not know something about Wicca and I have many books that refer to Wicca. However that is like reading biographies vs. autobiographies. Not saying any one is more real than the other. Scott Cunningham's book was not only well written but easy to follow. There were more than enough references, tables, and appendices. You were moved from what Wicca was not, including magic, to that which it is including the fundamentals of the religion. His center point being that you will never know it by just reading. He delivers what the book promises. This book is designed for the Solitary Practitioner. And any perceived shortcomings or comparisons to more in-depth or complete books must be weighed against the purpose of this book. He also does a good job of compare and contrast to other religions with great insight. In his discussion he skirts around, subjects as magnetism, altered-states, hypnoses, and the like. Now these subjects I can relate to and use as a reference point to begin to understand Wicca. I am not going to rush out and buy a non-Shaker shaped broom. I already have some left over advent candles, and a place in the library for this Book.
Rating: Summary: Great first book on Wicca Review: This is an excellent first book to read on the subject of Wicca. It gave me everything I needed to know that this was the path for me and everything I needed to begin practicing. In the seven years since I read it, my spiritual practice has grown from a wealth of experience and been influenced by many other books, yet I can still see the impact this book had on me. When people ask me for book recomendations I recommend this one and Spiral Dance by Starhawk. This one makes Wicca accessible and presents everthing one needs to begin, and Spiral Dance offers depth and the things one needs to make Wicca a meaningful practice.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely a necessity... Review: As with all his works, Scott Cunningham's Guide for the Solitary Practitioner gives a true feeling for the magick that exists in magick. He gives feeling and emotion and enthusiasm to the writing. He never states that the way he writes about is better or more true than any other way. He encourages personal discovery and experimentation. He gives plenty of detail, both in his prose writing and in his numerous correspondence tables. Cunningham gives a clean, easy-to-read description of everything. The writing is simple, but not in a way like many use with children. Rather, it is written so that the reader, almost no matter who he or she is, can follow what he is saying and thus apply it. Over all, this is the perfect book for beginners. Cunningham honestly deserves(ed) the respect he is(/was) given.
Rating: Summary: Truly a nice book Review: Scott's books are wonderful. WICCA is among his best work. He was a gentle soul and a master herbalist and witch. Many might think that he was not a powerful witch because he was not able to heal himself from his illness and so passed away in 1993. But the truth is this, he was diagnosed with his terminal disease and through magick, herbals, and alternitave medicine he was able to continue living for 10 years before he finally died! That feat should speak for itself. If you are interested in Wicca, then buy Scott's books starting with WICCA.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful shamanic religion Review: I am not a Wiccan. I am a Shaman. I credit this book with leading me to Shamanism. My only problem with Wicca is the Celtic mythology. Mr. Cunningham did an excelent job in presenting Wicca, and I HIGHLY recommend this book to others seeking their spiritual path. Mr. Cunningham presents Wicca as nothing supernatural, but IS as natural as the five elements that make life possible I credit Mr. Cunningam for demystifying magick and stressing that magick is in the magician instead of the words or tools the magickan uses. I only have one minor nitpick against this book in that Mr. Cunningham did not include a copy of the Rede (pronounced Reed)Below is a short version of the Rede. Bide the Wiccan law ye must, in perfect love and perfect trust. Eight words the Rede fulfill "And ye harm none, do what ye will." What ye send out comes back to thee, so ever mind the rule of three. Practise this with mind and heart,d and merry ye meet and merry ye part. If you have comments or questions E-Mail me. Two Bears Wah doh Ogedoda
Rating: Summary: Don't think about it, Just Buy it. Review: This is the first book among many that I have purchased since my interest in the Craft took hold. It is without a doubt for me the best beginners book on the market. Cunningham takes you from absolute zero knowledge of the Craft, wipes away all the dogma that surrounds the Craft and replaces it with FACTS. What Wicca is, where it came from, the Gods and Goddesses, rituals, spells, you name it, for the beginner it's in there. This book is worth absolutely every penny. Blessed Be.
Rating: Summary: Information, Please Review: In this Capitalist world, when one makes a purchase, one gives money, and hopefully, expects to receive the same value or higher in return. In my opinion, this book, and it's kin _Living Wicca_, do not fulfill such an ideal. Although Mr. Cunningham has a splendid philosophy on how one should grow in a faith, he leaves the buyer with little to no information -- nothing to build even the most broad of paths. Don't take my word as complete negativity. This review would be much prettier if the books' titles ended in the phrase "for Dummies". This is not an attack; I simply view the works on such a simplistic level, they could be akin to the "For Dummies" series. I found, after reading these two books, that I had learned nothing save for the philosophy from which they were written. The material presented within them is redundantly presented on the internet in an almost horrid number of Web Sites. Search the "'net" using absolutely any engine, and you may come across the same and more information that the author has presented -- free of charge.
