Summary: GREAT BOOK!
Review: This is a great book. My vocabulary increased immensely. I highly recommend this book for those who want to impress people in the way they speak professionally or colloquially. This book gave me the confidence to give presentations; I was never at a lost for words while speaking in front of a group. If you are someone like me who believes that words give so much power, then you will want to ensure you maximize your understanding of the choices of words you can use.

Also, this book is designed to introduce a word to you then expand on that word so you have a solid understanding of that word and related words.

Summary: Just Awesome!
Review: This is an excellent book! The book just pulls you right in. At the end of each chapter it has brief sections on grammar exercises that are very progressive. The author makes the book very, very interesting.

Summary: This book is wonderful
Review: This is the book that I used in my 11th grade English class. I just rediscovered it last night and knew I had to buy it to brush up on my vocabulary. I just love it. Rather than be taught scores of random words at a time, the author of this book presents new words through their Latin roots. I think it has a much more lasting effect -- if you know what a few Latin words mean you will know what many, many English words mean. And it's not boring at all. The chapters each contain lots of exercises to test your comprehension. I can't say enough good things about this book. If you want to expand your vocabulary, I don't think there could possibly be a better book on the market to help you out.

Summary: Word Power Made Easy
Review: This is the greatest vocabulary book I've read to date. The latin roots taught in this book make it possible to recognize zounds of words not presented in these pages but in every day life. Also the words provided here are frequently used in our daily environment so it really does help to be familiar with them. There are also interesting little tid bits about common usage of language, and what is socially acceptible (if inaccurate by its original meaning). There are interesting tid bits such as a list of all the phobias. It's fun to quiz my know-it-all friends on their vocabulary, or better yet correct them ; ) As far as difficulty, I would say this book gives you a graduate level non-specialized vocabulary, but it does make a difference when reading, speaking to educated people, or taking entrance exams such as the GRE. I keep this book in my bathroom for frequent and brief reviews. No matter what your vocabulary, you won't know all of these latin roots, and you should.

Summary: A little basic.
Review: To start off, the method that this book uses to teach words is a very effective one. If you see a word you don't know in this book, there is no doubt that you will understand it fully by the time you are through. Additionally, I will concede that this book is stuffed with words to the extent that nearly anyone should be able to learn at least something from it. So then why only two stars? I gave this book such a low rating because I found that Norman Lewis' choice of words to be thoughtless in that nine tenths of the words taught in the book are words that most fifth graders know, while the remaining tenth are obscure words that are rarely used. Between those two opposite ends of the vocabulary specrum, there is little to be found in this book. If you are the average Joe looking for a companion (a book) to bring along on your journey to mastery of the Enlish language, I commend you for your cause, but if you are considering buying this book, you are in the wrong place. Keep looking; there are some amazing books in the vocab building genre.
