Rating: Summary: Anne Moody Review: Thinking that this was going to end up being an annoying book report book, I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up staying home on a Friday night just to finish the book. I have to admit a few parts get slightly long, but overall it's a great book. Anne Moody writes well and clearly. It tells a lot about black history and I suggest reading it.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST I'VE EVER READ Review: THE FIRST PAGE OF THE BOOK STARTS ABSORBING YOU U FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP READING THE BOOK TILL THE LAST PAGE. SHE HAS NARRATED HER LIFE SO WELL THAT WHILE READING THE BOOK YOU CAN IMAGINE YOURSELF AS A CAMERA AND JUST RECORDING EVERYTHING THATS BEEN GOING ON WITH MOODY FROM THE AGE OF FOUR TILL SHE MOVES UP NORTH.
Rating: Summary: A BOOK ALL INTELLIGENT AND MATURE READERS WILL LOVE Review: I WAS ACTUALLY ASSIGNED TO READ THIS BOOK FOR A COLLEGE HISTORY COURSE. SOMETHING USUALLY PAINFULL, TURNED OUT TO BE A WONDERFULL EXPERIENCE. THIS IS A LIFE ACCOUNT OF A YOUNG BLACK GIRL GROWING IN UP IN THE SOUTH DURING THE 40'S AND 50'S. NOT BEING BLACK OR FROM THE SOUTH, I WAS DRAWN INTO THIS BOOK FROM THE BEGINNING AND FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO PUT DOWN. YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Rating: Summary: Almost 30 years later and I vividly remember this book. Review: My sister had this book in her room, she was required to read it for school. I was about 11 or 12 and picked it up and could not put it down until I was finished. It made such a huge impact on me that I remember it to this day. Perhaps I identified so much with the main character, but I come from a white middle class suburb of California - that's how powerful!
Rating: Summary: Captivating and Real Review: Anne Moody's, Coming of Age in Mississippi, is an in depth autobiographical essay about the life that Moody led. Starting from her childhood years until the years that she was involved in the Civil Rights Movement, Moody tells the story of her life using some very vivid details. She tells of how it was like growing up poor in the rural south of Mississippi. Through this book, Moody gives accounts of the issues of her time. This book raises many issues. Above all these issues, racism is the greatest one of them all. From her childhood years up until her adult years, Moody tells of the racism that existed during her time from police brutality all the way down to the lynching of Blacks in the south. It is the issue of racism that leads Anne Moody down the path that she took in life. Beginning from her participation in the Movement to the development of ideas about the movement and its leaders. This book is filled with excitement, drama and tear-jerking scenes that reveals the truth of Racism in the South. Moody's use of words and vivid expressions compel the reader to feel, touch, hear, and see what she is trying to confer. Reading about how she saw the world at the time allows me to understand more of what really happened on a more personal level. Even though today racism is not as visible as it was thirty years ago, I know it still exists. Maybe one day, we as American citizens will be able to come together as one. Live in unity as brothers and sisters. Taken from the Negro Spiritual, We Shall Over Come, we all know that: "The truth will make us free, The truth will make us free, The truth will make us free some day. Oh, deep in my heart I do believe The truth will make us free some day" (384).
Rating: Summary: A slow start, but is worth it later on! Review: Though a little tedious at first, Coming of Age in Mississippi really comes alive as time goes on. In the beginning Essie Mae Moody's father, as she was known as a child, left her and the rest of her family. This proves to have a large impact throughout the course of her life. This occurs in the section of the book known as Part I - Childood. It was this section that I found to be boring, dull, and monotonous. I suppose to another reader, they might have found this period in her life very thought provoking, but i found it to be the contrary. Once through this time period, I became more and more intrigued by this young woman. As the transition from Part I into Part II was made, reading became progressively more bearable. Though tragic and terrible things happened to her as a child, that shouldn't happen to any child at her age, it just couldn't hold my interest. However, in Part II Anne's life takes a turn for the better. Things start to happen to her and she eventually becomes more self-confident and a lot more interesting to the reader. Though it is towards the end of the book where things really started to pick up and become more appealing. Despite the rather unenjoyable start, I feel that it was a pleasure to read this book and that it definately has made me re-consider some of my views on biased issues.
Rating: Summary: VERY MOVING. You won't stop reading it. Period. Review: Anne Moody's book takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride of emotions: sadness, tranquility, anger, fear, hope, and militancy. But beware: reading this book WILL turn you into an activist! Don't miss this one, even if you have to check it out at the library.
Rating: Summary: A book that takes you to the life of a freedom fighter. Review: Anne Moody's powerful story brings the reader into the world of Negroes in the fifties and sixties, where on a daily bases, they faced bigotry, discrimination, and prejudice. Her words make the reader fell as if they're sitting next to her at the Woolworths food counter, having food thrown at them for sharing her views on life. She makes her fear of being beaten by the local police a fear you feel as the knot in your stomach gets tighter with each page. But along with these fears and acts of violence, you see the courage and strength in this young girl that makes her such a memorable individual. This book tells you the story of a fighter for eqality that just won't quit, teaching us that when times are tough, you don't run and hide. She has described every painful detail of the equal right movement that became her life, so that other generations as well as her own could know what she as well as many others were forced to live with. And along with these admirable strengths, Anne Moody reminds us that even when we think we've achived our goal, that doesn't mean it's time to stop and relax. She shows us that there is always something better to strive for.
Rating: Summary: this book was great Review: my sophmore year in college I had the choice of taking afro-american history or african- american literature. I chose afro- literature. The other class was given the opportunity to read Coming of Age... I just picked it up oneday and began to read it in the book store. To make a long story short this book took me back. Once I started reading I could'nt put it down. I read the book in 2 days. That was two years ago, I just recommended this book to a friend. Now, I'm going to read it again. This is her story and this is history.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring throughout Review: One's life is, though it may seem cliche, a long and winding journey. At this moment in time, I am still at the beginning of my journey. Though I have never met her, I feel the journey fo Anne Moodey has affected my life in a way I cannot describe. Her autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi is an amazing tale of her courage. I am fifteen years old. At 15, Anne Moodey was earning a living as a waitress and basically supporting herself. Anne's dedication to civil rights shows the vast impact that one ordinary person can make in the life of millions. I hope her dedication to her cause will inspire others , no matter where the journey takes them , to make a difference
