Rating: Summary: Mis-informative Review: If you are a just-born Christian, or a husband, do not read this book, as it will give you misinformation that will confuse you and hurt your relationship with your wife.
Rating: Summary: Entirely Subjective Review: I wrote a nice LONG review earlier, and it somehow didn't get online. I just want to get my rating on here, and say that the book is entirely subjective, and I am a Christian. I know many men and women who do not fit either of the stereotypes John puts them in throughout this book. Also, I know many 'nice' Christian men who are also very passionate about their faith and their journey to meeting their Lord. Also, women do not need to be 'rescued', nor do they need to be told they are 'beautiful' for them to be content in life and hold self-esteem. Society already is telling men they need to be 'macho' and 'strong' and 'courageous' to be "real men", we don't need "Christain" advocates like John Eldredge further emphasizing that point, and making men think they are back in the days of the Bible, when it WAS necessary for the men to fight for their country, family and welfare. Now, it is necessary for ALL PEOPLE to fight for the same things, but not always with the violence and barbaric examples John uses in his book.
Rating: Summary: ENLIGHTENING BOOK FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN Review: As a counsellor, I am continually trying to go above and beyond past education and experience in a contunual quest to fully understand humanity. Learning is a never-ending process and we can never have enough information. I cannot comment on this book from a man's perspective, but from a woman's point of view it was refreshing, enlightening and provided a novel insight on what man needs to be versus what society expects him to be - there is a vast difference. That statement can also be applied to the woman among us; however, this book appears to be basically aimed at the masculine gender. As the author points out, many men, as little boys, are filled with dreams and visions of one day conquering the world, becoming heroes, and living a life of adventure in unknown fields. Whatever happened to those dreams and aspirations for riskless adventure? Some men still pursue it but, with age and life's experiences, many outgrow the dreams of youth. I am sure many men will read the book, sit back and say, "Ahh, I can relate to what the Eldredge is saying, now I understand." The book is also excellent reading material for women; it will help provide insight on what a man emotionally needs in his life to be the person he was truly meant to be. Another recommended book well worth reading is "Journey of Desire", also by Eldredge.
Rating: Summary: GreatestBlessingThisChristmasBesidesGod,Family,LovedOnes Review: I got this book for Christmas a few days ago. I am almost finished. You need to understand that I rarely read books easily. I find that they don't hold my attention. This is one of very few books that I have not been able to put down. I am recommending it to anyone that I can. Actually I sometimes find that I value it so much that i don't want everyone else to have it. It has defined so many things I have thought, but didn't have a place for in my mind. It is an essential book, especially in todays society. This book has been one of the greatest blessings this Christmas.
Rating: Summary: Jesus was no wimp! Review: This author helped me to see something I have always felt but never really thought about, that churchgoers are boring and passionless. Now I know why I don't go to church and do not enjoy the company of those who do. Thanks John! Now I don't have to feel guilty anymore! As for the rest of the book, I won't rehash the fine reviews already posted but will note that the author quotes heavily from Robert Bly's IRON JOHN, a book I recommend any man to read.In fact, the author quotes alot period, too much really. Another book worth reading because it details masculinity in its fulness is KING, WARRIOR, MAGICIAN, LOVER by Robert Moore. I can only give this book three stars for the content isn't any where near the level of the two other men's books I have mentioned, but the author deserves praise for saying what many Christian men need to hear: look at yourself you wimp! You are not doing any body any good, including yourself, by making Jesus into a meek and mild Mr.Rogers-type and following that projection. You ARE meant for something bigger than church suppers! Your youthful dreams can't be shoved aside in the name of God, duty and family for they will prevail if only to make you miserable because you didn't follow your heart.
Rating: Summary: WOW!!! Review: I love to read but find I give myself little time to do so in my often hectic life.I am new found to Faith, though I have always believed in God and lived by the belief in savoring a moment and enjoying daily the little things that can make us happy if we open our eyes. The title caught my eye, but the cover and excerpts I read felt as though the book was me and my soul. As I write this I am still reading it and am out here buying it for several friends. The paraphrases from the Bible leave me longing to read it again ad refer back to each quote or paraphrase and read that completely too! This really is one I will re-read and refer to for the rest of my life!
Rating: Summary: Ever wonder why? Review: I recommend all of John Eldredge's books, but this book takes the cake by far. Even though this book is for "discovering the secret of a man's soul," I think that both men and women can benefit from reading it. The quotes at the beginning of the chapters are great. My favorite page is 175.
Rating: Summary: One of the most important books I've ever read Review: I purchased this book at a time in my life when I was seriously questioning God, my relationship with my father, and my role as a man. I read it all the way through in about a day; I find myself, three weeks later, referring to it on a daily basis. I appreciate Eldredge's candidness and boldness in writing this book. It has opened my heart to God the Father and has helped bring me to a point where I am content being a child of God. If you are in a position where you are questioning what it REALLY means to be a godly man, I encourage you to check this book out. Don't write it off as being "just another Christian man's book." It's so much more than that!
Rating: Summary: You will find your heart and purpose Review: Some may think that the author promotes abandoning wisdom for foolishness. Not so. If you do, you have missed the point of the book and you are probably a woman. Men have been suppressed from being men for decades now and our society is suffering from the impact. Mr. Eldredge hit the nail squarely on the head with this book and goes right to the heart of the matter. This book has enlightened me not just in understanding myself, but also, my sons and my wife. It has helped me to be a better husband and father, while freeing up my masculinity, unashamedly. There's a deep frustration that many men feel about their role in their family, job and society. This book will give you the understanding you need to know and will free you to be the man you are hard-wired to be. If you are married, get your wife to read it too. This book will change both of your perspectives about a man and a woman's design and purpose.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read Review: Even reading from a woman's perspective, I can say that this book completely changed my understanding of men and relationships. It even helped me understand my own femininity better. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for answers about their relationships. I really enjoyed reading The Journey of Desire, but this book floored me. By the grace of God, Eldredge truly outdid himself!
