Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Fantastic gothic mystery for older youth and adults...
Review: T.H. White (the author of "The Once and Future King") wrote this stunning little mystery in 1932, and it's a shame he never tackled any more, since he shows a quick and fluid mastery at the form. It combines two plot conceits: an ingenious locked-room puzzle, and a terrifying action plot (which resembles the twisted horror modelings the X-Files later used), and a thrilling denoument that most authors would give their eye-teeth for.

I first read it about 5 years ago, and was sucked right into the Holmesian atmosphere and vivid characterizations, but was dismayed when I found that the book was no longer in print, having last been published in 1977. Well, Hurrah! the story is back in print, and if you've been looking for an intelligent, creepy thiller to keep you awake at night, this is the book for you! Highly recommended.
