Eight years previously, after watching her sister die, Scorch slaughtered the female thugs responsible. But one of the gang members, the ringleader, remained. Now, after a bold escape from prison, Scorch blends into the New York City landscape, on the hunt for her. This is a thriller on two levels. Scorch stalks her prey, while the police-abetted by the prison psychologist who has worked with Scorch for eight years-are trying to capture her before she kills again. The other level is more subtle. Eric Glass, the prison therapist, has formed a bond of sympathy with the young woman over the years. They are disturbingly similar in many ways, and though Scorch does not know it, she and Glass share parallel traumas from their pasts. Joel Ross, who has worked for years as a prison psychologist, writes about a world he knows from the inside out. It is a topsy-turvy world, peopled with pimps and prostitutes and strip clubs, a fascinating look at the darker side of life.
