Summary: Dawn of The Dead on an Iceberg
Review: I didn't care for Deep Current. The cover shot on the book is very misleading leading one to believe that it is an action story ala Cussler. Folks I have to tell you that this seemed more like a gory horror novel than anything remotely like Clive Cussler. If I had read the editors review here, I would not have bought this book.

More than 3/4 of the book involves mutant monsters running around devouring people in excruciatingly graphic detail (see editors review). Images such as the disgusting description of a human head floating around in the transparent mutant monster digestive tract were not images that I wanted to see in my minds eye. I got so fed up with the continuous gratuitous gore that I could not read much further especially after the young preteen shipwreck survivor is terrorized/traumatized during the scene with the human head. Also, there was absolutely no character development as they spent most of their time either being devoured by mutant monsters or running away from them. There are a few bits of science thrown in try to explain the mutants but it was too forced. If I wanted to read a novel about mutants, I'd have reread Relic.

Summary: A Horrible Horror.
Review: It sounded interesting, and the idea was novel, but I felt the title and cover misrepresented the book. The story worked on a basic level and the scientific details very informative, but the author went overboard in his vividly gruesome descriptions of death and dismemberment. I quickly grew tired of the macarble detail and found I could skip paragraphs at at time and stil keep track of the plotline. However, my real problem with this book were the one dimensional characters and the unrealistic interactions b/t the Marine characters. I really hate when authors write about the military withoutconsulting someone who served. The interactions b/t the Gunnery Sgt and his subordinates did not realistically reflect the Corps, and the Captain calling the Gunny, "sergeant", would not happen in the Marine Corps. To make matter worse, the author seems to confuse Marines w/ (Army) Soldiers, which is tantamount to heresy. All and all the strong premise of the book melted half way through.

Review: IT'S DAWN OF THE DEAD MEETS INVADERS FROM MARS IN THIS SCIFI MILITARY THRILLER.
AN ICE FLOW THE SIZE OF MANHATTAN PROPELS ITSELF AGAINST THE CURRENT FROM THE ANTARCTIC TO HAWAII. ON BOARD ARE AN EVIL HORD OF TRANSPARENT HUMAN EATING MONSTERS FROM WHO KNOWS WHERE.
TWO LARGE MILITARY PLANES CARRYING A PLATOON OF MARINES, AND A SELECT GROUP OF SCIENTISTS LAND ON THE FLOW, HOPING TO DISCOVER IT'S PROPULSION SYSTEM, AND STOP IT, BEFORE THE FLOW REACHES HAWII.
MANY OF THEM END UP AS DINNER FOR THE OTHERWORLDLY INHABITANTS OF THE FLOW. ENOUGH ACTION FOR ANY SCIFI, OR MILITARY ACTION THRILLER ADDICT. I LOOK FORWARD TO READING HIS BOOK "ZERO HOUR".
