Rating: Summary: Share this with a friend Review: A Defector in Place is as exciting as anything by Ludlam or LeCarre and easier to follow. It keeps your attention and gives your emotions a roller coaster ride. The ending is certainly not what one would expect. Full of espionage, adventure and romance thrown in, it's a wonderful blend and makes for a reading adventure. This is one of those books you don't want to put down.

Rating: Summary: Truth in Deception Review: In his new novel, A Defector in Place, Kenneth Tolliver once again brings us into the smoothly brutal world of espionage. From the deceptively mild tension of the opening interview to the shattering conclusion, the reader's imagination is inexorably conducted through a kaleidoscopic roller-coaster of violent deception relieved by scenes of tenderness and tough truth. Tolliver handles the twists and turns of his plot so skilfully that the reader is usually surprised but never confused. The plot is accurately described in the title: our protagonist is sent to manage a defector in Place, a Soviet embassy officer who can furnish useful information; the machinery of such an operation, with its risks and the security devices it must outwit, are clearly and suspensefully set forth. Tolliver has richly performed the promise of his earlier novel of espionage, 5 GTC. He gives us a good read, in a story that stays with us long after we have absorbed it.
