Rating: Summary: Page-Turning Suspense in Coastal California Review: P.I. Tom Henry is hired by the wife of Larry Gardiner, a wealthy real-estate developer, to investigate Gardiner's mysterious death. The massive explosion of his yawl during a sailing race on San Francisco Bay left an entire crew dead and positively no clues. Gardiner's sleazy dealings with construction companies, banks and even drug dealers leave Tom Henry wondering where to begin. His investigation takes him on a relentless journey through Northern and Southern California to find a motive and track down a murderer.Giardino's characters are complex and clever, adding to the intensity of the book. Eric Felix, the Navy SEAL with explosives expertise, is wonderfully frightening to the imagination and makes a terrific slimy thug. There are many interesting characters... some cool like Frank Sullivan, others greedy and crooked like Jessica Rankin. All are unique and entertaining with descriptions that lead to a full understanding of the individual. The intricate detail used throughout the book sinks the reader deep into the story. When Giardino describes the weather, you feel the temperature. The diving scenes off Catalina and San Francisco Bay reflect the extensive research done on the subject, as well as the descriptions used of Vietnam. You can see where you are at each moment, whether it's sitting in traffic, hanging out in Henry's Newport Beach office or surfing Trestles. All in all it's a good read, suspenseful and fast-paced... complete with a surprise ending.
