Review: I previously had little concept of how war is fought by real soldiers on the ground (except for Hollywood versions of this, which tend to focus more on heroics than real life). So this book was an eye-opener for me, with a wide cast of characters that put me in the heart of the minutiae of being a solider, and I enjoyed it.

The author seems to have done his homework with regard to the culture of the Korean peninsula and the effect outsiders have had on it. And I liked the well-drawn characters, who seemed to always take the most sensible course of action for the situations they were presented with.

An enjoyable read, especially for people interested in the life of enlisted soldiers.
