Summary: A Feel Good Book!
Review: "Family Secrets" is a feel good book that will make you happy you have your family...no matter how crazy they are. Through the eyes of Starlet St. Morgan, a woman who grew up with a single mother and was devastated when her only relative died. Then years later on the brink of starting her own family decides to research and connect with any family she may have...only to find out that the one person she identified with family was never related to her. The real "Family Secret" is how she came to be with the woman that raised her. It is the mix of a suspenseful political plot gone awry and the man that sets out to solve it that makes this book so interesting. The attention to detail and use of cultural and political environments is also a plus. From Jamaica, to D.C. to London and every turn and location offers a unique reading experience. It has a few minor errors, but they were greatly overshadowed by the grandness of the writing. I won't spoil it for any of you but I will say....this is a good book

Summary: Must Read
Review: Family Secrets is the must read of the year. I could not put it down. You feel as though you really know the characters personally. The author pulls you in and takes you on a rollercoaster ride(of emotions). She keeps on the edge of your seat. Great attention to detail. You feel as though you've traveled the world during this novel (a vacation of sorts). After reading this novel you will feel an awakened sense of adventure. The passion is undeniable. In this novel you relive the tragidies of the past three years(the D.C. Sniper, Louisiana Serial Killer and Sept. 11) and come out with a renewed sense of hope. The author delt withthese real life terrors with remarkable compasion and reverence. In the midst of it all you truly see ("After the darkest night always comes a brighter day" Tupac Shakur). Mystery, murder, love, loyality, family and politics fit snugly into 240 pages.

Summary: Secretly Tantalizing
Review: Family Secrets, by Astrya Richard, is an exciting and suspenseful read. Starlet St. Morgan is an author and owner of a publishing company. Her devoted and handsome husband, Mason, is an attorney. Both are young, successful, and deliriously happy. Unfortunately, their state of bliss is threatened when Starlet realizes a desire to trace her roots. Shortly after enlisting the help of Derrick Hayden, an old college acquaintance and private investigator, Starlet begins to travel down a dangerously deadly path. As Derrick unravels the mystery of Starlet's family tree, she soon finds out that her happiness is not the only thing threatened.

Family Secrets was a definite page turner. The plot was suspenseful and the characters were believable. Unfortunately, I was distracted by numerous typos and tense shifts. I found myself rereading sentences several times in order to get the full meaning of what was being conveyed. With the benefit of additional editing, this book has the potential for greatness. I look forward to additional books from Richard, as she is a talented storyteller.

UPDATE: Since reading this book, I am told by the author that she has a new copy of the book out with all of the errors corrected. Due to time constraints, I am not able to re-read the book, so I cannot offer another review. If in fact, this book has been tightly edited, it will prove a good read.

Summary: Best book I've read in a LONG time...
Review: I could not put this book down! It was good from beginning to end, and I love the way the author weaved the story around what happened in the world during the last year. I'm not a suspense reader and I would not have selected this book were it not for a friend of mine, but I am so glad I read it. Now I'm a fan of suspense. I'll be first in line for the next one...

Summary: Wonderful Book
Review: I read Family Secrets while riding from Houston to Dallas. I couldn't put it down. I would close it, and open it back two minutes later. I loved the way Mrs. Richard interspersed actual events into the storyline - esp. the HBCU references ... ;). Of particular enjoyment to me was the relationship between Starlet and Mason. It was quite refreshing to see a functional adult African American relationship in a novel.

Like I said, I read the book in three hours, because I couldn't put it down. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for suspense with a shot of romance chased by twists and turns which will leave you in a state of "I really wasn't ready for that!"

Summary: HOT Read!
Review: Reading the other reviews I was surprised that no one mentioned how HOT this book is. I loved the story. The characters seemed to jump off the page and take on a life of their own. The book was very well written and soundly intelligent. The suspense kept me turning pages (and chapter 15 almost gave me a heart attack). But the beneath all the intellect, even beneath the way the writer seemed to meld several genres (mystery, suspense, romance, political conspiracy), is the one thing that pulled me into the book to begin with......A GREAT LOVE STORY.

Summary: Juicy Story Line
Review: This novel is a good suspense thriller with a bonus love story to boot. Although I found a couple of the characters to be a bit pretentious, I loved the basic plot of this book. The plot draws you in and holds you there until the end. I found myself up on more than one night reading trying to get to the answer. Starlet and Mason had a very healthy relationship and it showed throughout this book. They can serve as inspiration. Yes...this book was steamy. Also I loved to way the author interwove real world events like the DC sniper and the Baton Rouge Serial Killer into the story line you don't find that much.
