The resulting feeling of helplessness and frustration was next to unbearable. But isn't such involvement one of the reasons we bother to read a book at all?

It's a cliche to say that a book grips one until the very last page. Sorry to use a cliche, folks, but it does. And that's not all--it makes you want to read it again immediately to find out how you could have been so stupid as to miss what was under your nose the whole time.
