Summary: OUTSTANDING READ!!!!
Review: As a hunter who visits Africa yearly, I am always skeptical to see an action/adventure book based in Africa that is written by a woman. I heard a radio interview with the author and I was intrigued and I must admit, she knows her subjects! The hunting scenes, the culture, the animal's behavior are spot-on! The story flowed from the first chapter, and held my attention non-stop to the end. I'm most impressed how and why the author used a current event like the bushmeat industry as a backdrop. I found it very interesting. This lady has one heck of a imagination too! Some of the scenes are gruesome and real, and others made me chuckle. I enjoyed the way the chimp, dog and elephant became important characters that I cared about. I highly recommend this book, whether you are a hunter or not. It's a real thrill!!

Summary: This book is a GREAT read!
Review: Darkside of Debonair begins by defining "bushmeat" to the reader:

"The meat of wild animals, including threatened and endangered animals that are protected by law, killed for profit by commercial hunters."

This book is a GREAT read. All 354 pages of it. If you like nature and wildlife, romance, spellbinding adventure and excitement - you are going to like reading this book - a lot.

From the moment you open the book, you are transported straight into the forest - the 'invisible' follower (luckily) to the characters in the plot. You are drawn in to become part of the action - to run with their fear and exaustion, sitting with them at the fireside - eating, planning and resting. Wondering what lies in wait for you the next day on that trail - with that
damn heartless poacher and his killers. Will you be next?

Throughout the story Barbara jumps from one set of characters -
backtracking from one scene to the next, in an exciting blend of mini adventures that combine to make this book an action packed story, enthralling to the very last page.

Well done Barbara, as you say, "Give a hoot for chimps!"

Summary: Darkside of Debonair
Review: I loved the book so much that I recommened it to my bookclub for their monthly selection. We chose this book for January. I look forward to our discussions generated by this book. Wilbur Smith is one of favorite authors and Barbara Davis has found his formula for intrigue, romance, and adventure mixed with a liberal dose of reality. I will be anxiously awaiting her next book.

Summary: African adventure that creates awareness
Review: I read many books set in Africa, but prefer a setting in South Africa. This book is set in Kenya and that is fine with me. I enjoyed the education I received from reading this novel. Barb did a splendid job of making us aware of the bushmeat trade and its associated atrocities. The storyline is interesting. The setting is beautiful. The lessons important. Overall the book is a great read. I look forward to Barb's next novel. I would recommend this book to anybody, not simply those who already enjoy reading novels of Africa.

Summary: Very impressive first story
Review: I, too, was sickened by the reality of the murders in the first chapter - good storytelling! Although the facts of the bushmeat crisis are horrible I found the story fast, fun and exciting - a good read! I like the fact that the story was based upon a real-life situation and that the atrocities visited upon the unsuspecting rare animals of Africa were addressed honestly and with no holds barred. It is important to impact the reader's sensibilities both thru fictional characters as well as with facts. The author did a great job of taking you into the bush with her. I would recommend this book to any lover of action, adventure or romance!

Summary: Vividly written, Great Story!!
Review: Really enjoyed this book. Recommend it for your book clubs. It's about a REAL LIFE situation that is happening today in our world. Don't get the uncorrected proof version, i have read both, and the final new book for sale is a better smoother read. Unless you are a collector. ANYWAY you'll enjoy this book as i did and i look forward to reading your reviews.

Summary: Just like being there!
Review: The way that Barbara gives details of the trip through Africa made me feel like I was along for the ride!! The subject matter, although disturbing and true, made for a very suspensful
story. I feel as though I know the main characters due to the indepth look at each one. I found myself not wanting to put it
down just to see what was around the next bend. A really good novel for a first effort. My hat is off to you, Ms. Davis!!

Summary: SPELLBOUNDING and REAL!
Review: This book took me on an African adventure and I never left my house! The details, suspense, romance/sex and violance were graphic and strong but tastefully done. Once I got past the reality and horror shown in the first chapter, I was meserized, completely caught up in the story. The plot twisted and turned, every chapter made me want to know what was going to happen next. I found myself really carring what was happening to the charactors. I cried and laughed outloud. This is not a book for kids. I didn't know about the bushmeat crisis or that people were hunting and eating chimpanzee's and other endangered animals. The author must have researched this for years! If you enjoy books by Wilbur Smith, like I do, then you will really love this one.

Summary: Kept my interest
Review: This book was very good. Once I started it, I could not put it
down. I felt as if I was right there at the scene , or like I \
was watching a film. I can't even imagine the work the author,
must have done to come up with the information in it. I
definitely learned a lot about the bushmeat issue, and just
how the poachers actually operate. What I enjoyed most ,
was the characters , and how real they were. I found myself, sometimes on the edge of my seat with the action involved
in the book. The guys would also love the adventure , and the references to the types of guns used and calipers, and the facts were so real. Enjoyed the romance too!

Summary: The Darkside of Debonair
Review: Wow. This book got my attention from the very beginning. The Darkside of Debonair entertains the subject of bushmeat and the practice of poachers in Africa. This book was action packed. It shows the greed of man, friendships, romance and amazing animals. The Author had a way of making you feel like you were there in Africa. You could feel the physical and emotional pain, the fear of the characters involved and the heat of the countryside along with the beauty. Some of the scenes were graphic and others made you laugh. I couldn't put the book down. I Have recommended this book to my bookclub and many others.
