Summary: a small town campus mystery
Review: EVERY FIRST SATURDAY is one of those gentle & complicated mysteries, switching from the victim to the various characters who will play parts in both uncovering the victim's young & unsavory past, as well as discovering unwholesome propensities of college life.

EVERY FIRST SATURDAY is a charming mystery, filled with believable characters, red herrings galore & sly connections. Bobby Jaye Allen's writing, while often breathless & convoluted, gives the reader a fine portrait of a quiet Midwestern college town, complete with beauty parlor dangers, rocky & working marriages, lovely autumn scenery, plenty of domesticity & a tornado warning siren that becomes the one clue that clinches the killer's identity.

Not an earthshaking read - just a quiet, evening's mystery.

Summary: Slow to start but heats up fast!
Review: Every First Saturday is the story about the murder of Cy Sweetly or at least the ambitious young woman who has everyone thinking she is Cy Sweetly. Her death takes place in a town where normally the most exciting thing that happens is a tornado warning. When Cy is found death, no tears are shed, and the lists of suspects are many, including one of Cy's teachers and the teacher's wife. It's up to Chief Brady Kincaid and the Carroway cousins to catch the killer before the wrong person is convicted.

Every First Saturday is a good mystery, but it starts off quite slow, with boring and ill-crafted, sentences. Luckily, it picks up towards the end of the novel with surprising twists and turns that will keep the reader turning the pages late into the night. If you enjoy a suspenseful novel, this is the one.

Summary: College campus murder makes an exciting read
Review: Most of our reading group, Once Around the Mall, attended colleges, both small and large, and joined sororities. So it was easy for us to relate to "Every First Saturday." The author's description of attracting pledges during rush week and campaigning for the Delta's homecoming queen candidate brought back memories. Most of us also remember being acquainted with someone like the victim, an unscrupulous conniver. Everyone in the reading group admitted being surprised at the ending and who the killer turned out to be. We also wonder if the author will ever have Brady Kincaid investigate the twenty-year old unsolved murder still on the books. Should make another interesting story.

Summary: Five stars for author's first book.
Review: My subscribers know I won't review authors' work until they have published at least three books. Such is now the case for Bobby Jaye Allen whose work I have had the pleasure of reading following suggestions from subscribers. The first in this author's series, "Every First Saturday," explores the murder of a coed on the campus of a small Ohio teachers college. We soon learn the victim is not to be pitied and there are a number of suspects, all of whom Cy Sweetly trampled on in order to attain her lofty goals in life. The investigation is conducted by retired homicide detective, Brady Kincaid, with help from Claudia and Joyce, alumna of the college and longtime residents of Lombardy, Ohio. These and other characers are as real as your acquaintances, the conversations ring true, and the settings are easy to picture. This story should not be skimmed through as the reader will miss the many original ideas the author inserts. An example is the students' secret "Dean Dunne Drone-Off," a contest to see who can imitate the pompous dean of students best. Anyone who has ever been subjected to the loquacity of a garrulous speaker will appreciate the drone-off.The author takes her time telling this tale and patient readers will give it Five Stars.
