Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Stark and Compelling: Best of the Series So Far
Review: All of the Inspector Rebus novels share a gritty sensibility, a dry Scottish wit, and well drawn characters. Sometimes the plots don't live up to the rest of the package. But not this novel: Ian Rankin has put together a wonderfully dark and intricate mystery that remains plausible and compelling to the end. Don't miss it!

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: not the best Rebus
Review: The Rebus character is complex, the plots are complex, but in this novel it does not come off as satisfyingly as others. If you have not read a Rankin/Rebus novel yet, start with the excellent THE FALLS. This novel is about a step and a half below the level of that one. If you are a Rebus reader, you will like it although it is not the best of the lot.
