Rating: Summary: The Monkey Lives Review: Any book that can swing from Teilhard to Olivia Newton-John and back again is worthy of note. The best part of this conventionally Maltese Falcon-esque murder mystery is Hill's insight into the interior dialog of pre-post-modern twentieth century Americans (yahoos, aging hippies and movie stars, etc.). Also noteworthy is his riff on the infuriating petty annoyances of life in our culture, which lead in this novel to Sierra's gratuitous violence. I don't think Hill intended this, but he gives a chillingly accurate protrayal of what happens to us when we turn our back on God. Something to think about in the wake of Sept 11. The monkey lives.
