Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Clever, Clever, Clever Review: Heir Apparently by Veronica Dolan is one of the most intriguing novels I have ever read. Think of the most cleverly plotted novel you have ever read and multiply it by ten. Even better. ALL the characters are real-life, flesh and blood people instead of the usual two-dimensional characters that are found in books of this genre. If you're a murder mystery/thriller fan, Heir Apparently is a MUST!

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Fun mystery--enough red herrings to stock a fish market Review: The author's sense of humor shines in her debut mystery. Quirky characters and complex plot create a classic-style puzzler to challenge the reader. Although the setting is contemporary Colorado, the story is reminiscent of madcap comedies of the 1930s. The plot brings together a gang of possible heirs to a fortune left by Virgil Hadley, a notorious practical joker. His videotaped will demands potential heirs perform distasteful, degrading acts to qualify for their inheritance. This leads to several murders as heirs scramble over one another in their mad dash to wealth. The characters are distinctive and well-drawn. Perhaps the most vivid is Virgil himself, who never appears alive in the book, yet dominates the story with his presence. The author cleverly weaves geneology into the plot, revealing interesting investigative techniques. Additional subplots educate the reader about antique silver, furniture and art. Judicious editing could have tightened the writing and cut occasional repetitiousness. However, minor stylistic problems don't detract from the overall enjoyable story.
