Summary: Does this ever need editing/proofing! Oi!
Review: The Arabian Horse "industry" of the 1980's is an interesting topic - ripe for a full-blown 'expose' similar to Auerbach's excellent book on the rise and fall of Calumet Farm "A Wild Ride". However, "Trading Paper" and the other two books by Cali Canberra don't fill the bill. The writing style is atrocious - an English/journalism teacher could easily use these books as an example of "Don't Let This Happen To You!" (and don't blame the publisher for not providing an editor - I believe these books were self-published by the author).

The book is purported to be fiction based on fact, but what it turns out to be (easy enough to figure out for anyone who followed the Arabian Horse industry at the time) is a thinly veiled story based on 'gurus' and celebrities of the Arabian horse world at the time - she just changed their names ever so slightly.

Like I said, interesting topic (which is why I'm giving it two stars) but due to the writing, a VERY painful book to read. And "Never Enough" is worse still.

Summary: Interesting insight into the 1980s Arabian horse industry
Review: The strong point of this book was the author's intimate knowledge of the innerworkings of the high-end Arabian horse industry of the 1980s. For horse entusiasts, a novel written by someone who knows a thing or two about horses is refreshing, and Canberra does a nice job of working twists and turns into this crime/mystery. The weak point by far was the lack of competent editing and proofreading - but I lay this at the feet of the publisher more than the author as the story itself was interested and left me ready to start the sequel Buying Time. Even my husband - a non-horse lover - got caught up in the story and read both books as well. Overall, an entertaining read but the typos/proofing errors kept me from rating it any higher because they were at times annoying.
