Summary: Maggie does it again
Review: And how can she not -- the sherriff can't solve his way out of a wet paper sack. I love the setting of Hernia, and as usual, Ms. Myers sends us on a fun romp through the Pennsylvania mountains. It's nice to see Magdalena's horizons broadening!

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Light hearted and heavy handed
Review: Con man Clarence Webber has had a long and checkered career, which ends with his death by arsenic poisoning in Hernia's city jail. Magdalena Yoder becomes involved, since her inn supplies the jail's food, but it is soon evident that the poison was placed in the Shrimp and Grits (recipe provided) after the meal arrived in Webber's cell. Since the town's inept police chief is completely mystified, Magdalena volunteers to run down the perpetrator among the four persons who were known to have visited the prisoner. As she retraces Webber's trail through south central Pennsylvania and into Maryland, she soon discovers that the victim left more than empty wallets and broken hearts behind-to say nothing of a long list of individuals who had more than enough other reasons to do him in. GRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT is, as the title would indicate, a light-hearted novel, replete with outlandish descriptions of eccentric people. The story sometimes lapses into heavy-handed humor, but the overall effect is still a positive one. While Myers passes along more information on cooking grits than the average reader might want to know, that doesn't seriously detract from an amusing work.

Summary: Gruel and Unusual Punishment
Review: Gruel and Unusual is another charming Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery starring Magdalena Yoder. Tamar Myers has a wonderful sense of humor! Her books begin with some of the funniest opening lines I've ever read! Plus, the recipes are terrific!

Summary: Good Book
Review: I thought this book was the best out of the Pennsylvania-Dutch mysteries Tamar Myers has written. In my opinion, it kept me interested right to the end. I especially like the part where Magdalena's ex-husband shows up. I liked how more of the town was involved, it gave the plot a nice twist. I recommend this book to any who enjoys a good humored mystery.

Review: Magdalen Yoder is always funny. This pretty much typical of the series, which means it is witty, charming, funny and fun.

Summary: Magdalena sets out to find out who poisoned Clarence Webber
Review: Magdalena Yoder owns and runs the PennDutch Inn in Pennsylvania. She is a God-fearing Mennonite woman who also assists her brother-in-law, Melvin Stolfus to solve some of his more difficult cases. He is the Sheriff and has political aspirations.

He once again asks for her help. Clarence Webber died while eating a bowl of gruel in the jail, gruel that Magdalena provided. She brought it, but her cook Freni made it. Freni is an Amish woman in her seventies who is not always easy to get along with, but she would never kill someone.

As Magdalena sets out to discover who put the secret ingredient that killed Clarence into the gruel. She starts by investigating the four females who visited Clarence before he died. Turns out they all claim to be his widow. If that isn't enough, a teenage hellion, Allison, is dumped on Magdalena and spices up things at the Inn. Then there is the Reverend Nixon, pastor of the church with 32 words in its name.

As Magdalena gets deeper and deeper into Clarence's past and his four widows, she finds herself in danger. Can she figure out who the killer is before someone else is killed, namely herself.

This series is always fun to read. A fabulous cozy series. Magdalena finds herself in all sorts of amazing predicaments and her Mennonite take on things can turn an ordinary situation into a hilarious one. Her sister Susannah, who is married to Melvin, is a character all by herself, let alone with her dog Shnookums.

I enjoy the different characters, the rich people staying at the inn, as well as the Mennonites and Amish and how they are all related to each other at least once. She has a wonderful way of telling a story and I constantly find myself reading more to find out what happens next. It's a book you won't want to put down. I highly recommend it and the whole series. Get ready to laugh!

Summary: Another fine mess for Magdalena Yoder
Review: This series is one of my favorites. Tamar Myers did not disappoint me. While the plot line was not as clever as some in the past, it was still very entertaining. I hope Ms. Myers will continue to take us to Hernia, PA to visit with Magdalena and her family and friends. It is a great way to take a vacation without leaving home.

Summary: A Little Better Outing for Magdalena
Review: This tenth installment in the Magdalena Yoder series is a bit better thatn some of the more recent additions to this series. There is still an editing problem that is apparent in the books, but I found that there wasn't as much repetition and even less "wailing". That is an improvement. But there is still the "off the wall" plot and unbelievable occurences (a car lands in a tree when shoved off the road?) Still I found the book amusing and there is a possibility of another interesting character - young Allison holds promise. In this book Magdalena is asked by Melvin to help him find who has poisoned one of his prisoners in his jail cell. Magdalena goes off in hot pursuit of some really strange female suspects. Anyway, we found out "who done-it" in the end.
