Rating: Summary: The Best Thriller I've Read in the Last Couple of Years Review: Take three women with nothing in common, add in a serial killer who wants them all dead, give the story to Nicci French to write and you have the best thriller I've read in the last couple of years. Ms. French tells the story of three women, all in the first person, who wind up victims. Yes, I'll admit it was a little surprising when Zoe wound up dead, because how could she be telling the story if she's well, you know, dead. Okay, it's an author's device and once you get past it, you pretty much know what's going to happen to the next girl. And most likely to the third. The thread between the story of each of these women is the investigation to catch what the police don't want to admit is a serial killer. This book not only keeps you guessing, but it has the absolute best ending I have ever run across in a mystery or a thriller. Never have I finished a thriller more satisfied. This book was so darned good that not only was I up all night reading, but I restarted it as soon as I finished and got halfway through the second reading before I turned out the light. If you like thrillers, if you like mysteries, if you want to see a woman take matters into her own hands and triumph, then this is the book for you. I just loved it, but I guess you've figured that out by now. Review by Captain Katie Osborne
Rating: Summary: Good Thriller Review: This book was passed to me by a co-worker, and I am now interested in reading all of Nicci French's novels. This story is about three different women and the effect a killer has on each of them. I found the story line believable and the characters interesting especially Zoe. I like mystery and suspense stories but lately I have become very disappointed with many story lines that want you to accept unbelievable plots and characters (e.g. she knows a killer is chasing her, but she has to go for a jog; or the package left on the doorstep even though the place is surrounded by agents).
This novel has a solid plot, and all of the characters and their actions are believable. This story is about three different women and their contact with one killer who is stalking all three of them. The first woman is Zoe (who is my favorite character), she is lonely and loveable and you want to protect her. Then there is Jenny who is a shrew and you hate her and her annoying attitude, but at the same time, as you find out why her character is the way it is, you begin to feel a bit of empathy for her. Then there's Nadia, who is tough and strong and a fighter. The novel is pretty much about how each different personality reacts to this serial killer stalking them.
Excellent Excellent Read! I would highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: Great summer reading Review: This is a serial-killer thriller with an unusual twist - the story is told in three parts, from the viewpoints of three women whose lives are very different but who are all being stalked by a murderer. They start receiving anonymous letters which they at first dismiss as crank letters - but then it slowly becomes obvious, to them and the reader, that their lives are at extreme risk. In the first two parts, we're left guessing as to the killer's identity - it must be someone they both know, but who, since their lives apparently don't intersect? At the end of the second part, the killer's identity will be revealed - and it is a big surprise - and the third part of the book is a classic "race against time" thriller, like some of Mary Higgins Clark's books. Will the third intended victim learn who is stalking her before he gets to her? Very suspenseful - a great read on a summer afternoon.
Rating: Summary: stalked. Review: Zoe, the 23 year old schoolteacher with a boyfriend who just isn't what she wants. Jenny, the 38 year old former hand-model with an unhappy marriage and children who barely acknowledge she exists. Nadia, the 29 year old child entertainer. They are nothing alike, and yet, someone wants them all dead. A someone who they may or may not know. A someone who loves them. A someone who sends them letters, declaring that very love. A someone who wants to know them, intimately... before killing them. At first, none of them believe it. Why would anyone want to harrass - to kill - them? They're perfectly normal, common women, with no real enemies. But then they begin to flinch at knocks on their doors, they become aware of the shadows that cross their walls as they lay in bed. They can do nothing to prevent anything from happening... except fighting back. I can't say I'm utterly in love with this book. It is good, I'll give you that - but there's something about it that I just dislike. The stalker stars occasionally, with italicised comments that lead into developing that character. The book would have been much better with more of those - at the end of the second part of the novel, we find out who the Bad Guy is, and by understanding his mind, we would be better able to understand what lead him to do what he did. The main reason this book gets four stars is because I really didn't like the character of Jenny. I'll admit that she was well developed, but I just can't help but dislike her. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Nicci French or thrillers - this is a good one by both standards.
