Summary: Stephanie Plum wannabe
Review: I gave this book 3 stars only because I was able to read the whole thing. The supporting characters are amusing, especially her rommmate and his romantic interest. Unfortunately, the main character is less than amusing and left me simply disgusted with her fumbling. She is supposed to be a nurse, which implies intelligence, and yet acts like a dim bulb most of the time. I found myself comparing the whole book to a Stephanie Plum novel and found too many comparisons where Ms Sokol came up short. My advise for someone looking for a fun read...read Stephanie, if you already have, reread one. You'll have a whole lot more fun than if you read this book.

Summary: The Belle of the Ball
Review: I think Pauline Sokol had better get her sequined slings ready because she's gonna' be crowned "The Belle of the Ball." A great read and the first book of a very successful series. I'm watching for the next Pauline Sokol mystery and romance.

Summary: EEK! ACK! EGADS!
Review: If 1/2 stars were possible my rating would go up.This was my first book with this author and it won't be my last. I disagree with another reviewer as I thought Pauline's bumbling around as an apprentice sleuth made for some interesting situations. She reminds me of a beginning Stephanie Plum and her cast of supporting characters.
However, the author needs to get rid of "ACK". It was used way too much and took away from the flow of the story. Beyond that I think with some seasoning Ms Sokol's adventures will become even more entertaining.

Summary: Fun and fast paced
Review: Lori Avocato brings us a funny, charming story of a burnt-out nurse turned Insurance Fraud Investigator turned Under-Cover Detective. Pauline Sokol hates her job as a nurse and feels that she needs a career change. When her roommate lands her a job as an Insurance Fraud Investigator, she wonders if she's bitten off more than she can chew. One thing leads to another and she actually starts to get the hang of spying on people, getting caught in rain storms, then staking out houses in sub-zero temps, while dressed in high heels and her parka. When Jagger (we never do learn his last name) shows up all-mysterious and asks her to go undercover to help his investigation, Pauline is convinced that he's with the FBI. Working with Jagger is a little unsettling on Pauline's nerves. Not only is he drop-dead gorgeous, he's also over-bearing, bossy and stubborn; just the kind of guy she tries to stay away from. But the bad thing is, she can't seem to stop fantasizing about Jagger.

If you're looking for a fun, easy read then this is the story for you. The characters are fresh, believable and full bodied. Throw in a cast of hilarious secondary characters and you have the perfect story of murder, intrigue and humor. Ms. Avocato is definitely an author to watch-out for!

Summary: This will hit the best seller lists!
Review: Nurse Pauline Sokol knew she was burned out. Needing something new, her gay roomie, Miles, gets her a job at a company that investigates insurance fraud. Being somewhat accident prone and knowing less than nothing about how to be a private investigator, Pauline is in over her head and she knows it.

Then Jagger steps in to teach her the ropes. In exchange for Jagger showing her how to be a decent P.I. and crack her first case, Pauline agrees to go undercover at a local health clinic to find evidence of medical insurance fraud for Jagger's case. Sounds easy until co-workers start turning up dead.

***** This mystery will have you chuckling aloud as you try to figure out "who-did-it". This is the author's first debut in the mystery genre and I believe she has found her little niche! As the first book in a series, this colorful cast of characters looks to be on their way to the top of the best sellers list! *****

Summary: solid who-done-it, chick lit style
Review: While she is trying to get a sick boy's mouth open, Pauline Sokol concludes she just does not want to remain a nurse any longer. After twelve years she is burned out. Her gay roommate Miles gets her a job at an insurance agency as a fraud claims investigator. Her first case is to prove that Tina Macaluso, receiving injury compensation, never injured her back on the job.

Pauline knows zilch about how to conduct an investigation; sexy Jagger offers to teach her if she will assist him on a case he works involving a group of doctors committing Medicare fraud by filing false claims. He wants Pauline to apply for a job as a temporary nurse since Tina is on medical leave. Jagger's source inside the office is murdered while Pauline stumbles across the corpse of the billings clerk leading her to wonder why she is doing the job she detests even undercover and could get killed doing it.

The heroine finds herself in several crazy situations that leave readers at times chuckling out loud and often concerned whether she can extricate herself from her perils without revealing her true purpose for being in the medical office. The quirky support cast adds humor to this wonderful debut mystery. Lori Avocado provides a solid who-done-it, chick lit style.

Summary: A big disappointment
Review: While the main character, Pauline Sokol seems like a fun character at the outset of the book. - she is an incredibly incompetant sleuth that makes you cringe with every obvious mistake she makes. She is supposed to be a medical insurance fraud investigator - but not a very good one. From sitting plainly in front of the person's house she is watching - to consistenly forgetting survellence cameras - it is infuriating. It is hard to concentrate on the story line when the main character is doing everything in her power to place obstacles in her own path.

I did enjoy the supporting characters alot - but the heroine was just not believable at all.
