Rating: Summary: An early masterpiece Review: ...This is the least boring novel I have ever read,... The clear writing style flows like water and the storytelling technique is perfect and perfectly engrossing. The story itself grabs you like it's hard to describe in words and you won't be able to put this book down, whether you're an avid or occasional reader. It's just that good and suspenseful. Secondly I think the spiritual redemption in the story is obvious...in this tale of murder, child abuse and incest... I guess there are those who will be appalled by the detailed descriptions, but not me. I was intrigued and found it quite educational. However, I wouldn't recommend this book to teens or "young adults." This is clearly a book for grown adults who can handle and understand this subject-matter. Also, I feel the characterization would have been even more well-rounded in a longer book. All that said, this is a truly amazing little novel, certainly one of the finest I've ever read, and the most exciting. I was literally on the edge of my seat on every page because the story develops so fast and interesting. It will be interesting to see what Rehak comes out with next, how similar or different it will be from this first one. I know I'll be first in line to snatch up a copy.
Rating: Summary: Thought-provoking! Review: A Young Girl's Crimes is a very thought-provoking and original debut novel. Rehak has a fine sense of atmosphere and storytelling...my only complaint? That it wasn't longer! A terrific read. I look forward to his next book.
Rating: Summary: Not for everyone, but I liked it! Review: A Young Girl's Crimes, by David Rehak, may not be for all readers because of the graphic sex and etc., but, I liked his story. Based on a true story and certainly worth reading! A YOUNG GIRL'S CRIMES, had me glued to my seat from the first chapter on.
Rating: Summary: very weird, very easy, very exciting & moving read! Review: Already a fan of this writer, I wanted to get this book when I read in one of the reviews that it's a fine example of "dark" writing. It's not dark in the sense that I thought it would be, but it's still great.
Imagine a young impressionable lonely girl without friends, being home-schooled by a strict father businessman in his stone mansion, trapped, like a wretched bird in a beautiful golden cage where she is physically taken care of but has none of her emotional needs satisfied. She wants to break out in any way she can to escape the boredom and meaninglessness and she falls under some very bad influences, including `perverse' porn. This leads her to act out on her most forbidden fantasies and impulses.
But there's much more to the story. This is an extremely stirring account of the nightmare version of daddy's little girl, who must dig herself back out of the muck and find real meaning and love in her life.
Rating: Summary: The Drama of Life Review: David Rehak has every reason to be proud of his first book. I found it to be an enjoyable and full of a variety of passions. The book is very short compared to the length of many novels today, yet it is not short on the drama. Flora is a character to whom you first would smile with understanding, then scold with anger, then strangle with outrage, then embrace with tender compassion. The ups & downs of life certainly filled her life. Rehak shows the dangers of emotional imprisonment and of completely unbridled lusts. The touches of theology weaved into the story are accurate, yet not overbearing on the plot. Rehak shows how tender truths can reach a calloused heart. There are enough plot twists to keep the story exciting, yet not so many as to make it annoying. This is certainly not the average fairy-tale story of a young girl experimenting with life's taboos. Reality has found a home in David Rehak's writings. His little novel has helped me to see that sometimes there is pain beneath a young woman's smiles. We all need to be willing to reach out & help before it's too late. Good job! I recommend this book, but to whom I am not sure. It will definately strike different folks with vastly different strokes. I think the sheltered reader might find some portions quite shocking; but should they continue reading to the end I think they will find satisfaction in the book and learn something in the process.
Rating: Summary: And the moral to the story is... Review: Flora and Bill was tired of the sheltered life style they father insisted on them having. Bill wanted to get out into the world so bad, that he willing gave up inheriting millions from his father to do so. Flora did not receive nurturing from her father and she was so tired of her tutor constantly belittling her, that she killed her and found the nurturing and sexual fulfillment in her next tutorial. After being betrayed by her new tutorial, she too gave up her inherence and moved in with her brother and his wife. Once, she succeed in breaking up her brother's marriage and after he kicked her out. She because homeless and an old man named John took her in and gave her nurturing and spiritual healing. This is a fast and interesting read, which read like an assignment for a creative writing class. When I thought I knew what the outcome would be, the author's vivid imagination played with my mine with his twist and turns. "A Young Girl's Crime" to me is an interesting read for book clubs.
Rating: Summary: Not Diheartening... The author's got potential Review: I appreciate David's bringing his first novella to my attention. It was most definitely worth the read. What I have ascertained from his first foray in the public eye is that he has created a controversial tale that people either love or hate. There can be no in between here. David shows amazing potential as a writer. His verbal ability astounds me as well as his mental organization. David clearly has sound knowledge of psychology as well. I am impressed with his capableness, though I have to wonder if his full potential was done justice by this piece. I did find the story to be riveting, although it was a quick read. I have found from experience, the shorter the book, the less satisfying it becomes. I must give David credit as he's made an admirable first novella. He has accomplished what most up-and-coming authors fail miserably at. David has written a mediocre novel, though with amazing potential. Please also walk away knowing this, David Rehak has gotten himself a reading public who recognizes his talent, even if it wasn't well displayed in his first endeavor. Here's hoping he'll keep writing and make the improvements. It is clear that he has quite a bit of genius. He just needs to practice his craft.
Rating: Summary: Wow!! Review: I finished this book this morning and I still can't get it out of my head. This is one of my new favorites. Don't pay attention to negative reviews by intellectual elites, this book is a real winner! For a short book I thought maybe it wouldn't be much, but there's so much to it and its so good! The characters are well-developed and I love John and I feel sorry for Flora but I think we know where she's going. This book will appeal very much to the Lovely Bones and Flowers In The Attic reader. The writing style is very easy to follow and enjoy. The story is fantastic. This is a page-turner if there ever was one. 10 stars for entertainment!
Rating: Summary: MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW Review: I found the novel A Young Girls Crimes to be quite Spiritual, although there were some aspects of it that I did not like. The books main character Flora Darby, is a spoiled rich girl. Raised under the protective arm of her father, she is kept from life itself. Her father I feel, had both her and her brothers best interest at heart, he just failed in the way he showed it. Keeping both Flora and her brother Bill sheltered from the real world, left them hungry for the normal activities of life and frustration took it's evil bite. Bill escapes his prison, seeking happiness with a woman that his father does not approve of, leaving Flora more frustrated and alone. Bill himself, never finds the happiness and fulfillment he longs for. Flora discovers her father's secret 'smut' reading . Since Flora is now becoming of age, her feelings are stirred reading and viewing this material. The guidance of a loving Mother is not there for Flora, as her Mother was killed many years before. She has no one to turn to, to discuss the burning desires she is feeling. Her lust is kindled as she consumes the readings of her father. Because of this, a murder takes place in their home and brings about the arrival of another young woman. You find yourself glad that Flora finally has someone to talk to, however, this only leads to more perversion and lust. Eventually Flora leaves her prison, as did her brother. Their futures do not have happy endings and left this reader disturbed. I think Mr. Rehak did a fine job at showing how lust and perversion can totally destroy a persons life and also the lives of those around them . I do feel however, that he did not need to be as graphic with his descriptions with some of the sex acts that he has in his book. I felt as if I was reading an X-rated smut magazine, and it left me uncomfortable. He could have let the reader know what was going on, without such personal details. It certainly took away from the book in my opinion. Greed, lust, murder, incest, all play a part in this novel. All of these things lead to destruction, and this is the way for Flora Darby and all those that she touched, including the one person who truly loved her, John.
Rating: Summary: At last! :-) Review: I loved it, I read this novel with much pleasure and enjoyed every word of it. It is really not my usual reading habit to finish a book in one day without even laying the book aside. I usually read books in 5 to 25 times during a couple of months until I really finish it tho this novel is so good and I could not lay it beside me to finish it later on. I never stopped reading as I needed to know how the story ended and I finished it the same day as I started reading it. Gosh, it is really good + erotic. Erotic in a warm and sensual way, making a person crave for warmth and love. Really a good novel, tho the ending was really sad I still loved it. It is also written in a fluent and pleasant manner and making it possible for the reader to feel and taste what the characters are experiencing. David Rehak is really a writer with great potential and great writing skills. He is heading for a successful future if he keeps up this good writing. I am looking forward to his next novel! A HUGE FAN FROM THE NETHERLANDS! I wish the writer all the best and all the luck in the world. AT LAST a good novel that does not end with an-always-good-ending-story!
