Summary: Readable
Review: This was readable, though I found it was very easy to put aside to do other things. I would still recommend it and will most definitely pick up her next book - hopefully one that ties up some of the ends left lose in Dead Witch Walking.

Summary: Great New Series
Review: Well I just finished Dead Witch Walking and enjoyed it. "How much?" you ask. Enough so that I went to Amazon and bought the Adobe Reader download version so that I can keep a copy of DWW on my Palm. Next step is to give my paperback version to my cousin and get him hooked the same way I did with the Dresden series.

While Rach and Ivy are the stars of the book it was Jenks that seemed to bring life to the book and the characters of Rach and Ivy. Many of the stories that I enjoy seem to have banter between the characters and Jenks provides that while not overpowering or taking away from Rach or Ivy.

What drew me into the book was the People whether they be Witch,Vamp,Ware or Pixy did not matter, that they be interesting and well written did.

I rate DWW 5 stars and hope this series last a long time.

Summary: A good idea..but could have been better
Review: Well if you liked the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, you will most likely like this book Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. This is a bit milder..it seems the main characters worst danger throughout the entire book is where Rachel almosts gets her throat torn out by her roommate, Ivy. She is weak in this book, but if this becomes a series, I think it will be worth reading. This book has a horrible ending though and leaves too many questions unanswered to the point where you are frustrated and hope there is a sequel to finish it off. Rachel needs to develop more and start kicking some supernatural [stuff] instead of getting caught in traps all the time. Maybe then it will be perfect. She has a very interesting side kick..a pixie! Who would have thought of that?

Summary: Gripping Debut Novel
Review: White witch Rachel Morgan has been a bounty hunter for Inderland Security for the last three years and it's been a constant bumbling battle for good assignments to prove her worth. She's become bored and disillusioned with the job and she wants out. Problem is, retiring from I.S. means a swift and sure retirement from life. The I.S. doesn't take kindly to broken contracts.

She's got a risky idea that may get her around that, though...if she lives long enough to see it through. Rachel figures that if she can tag the largest brimstone dealer in the Hollows and Cincinnati area, she'll be able to get her contract paid off. However, getting the evidence to bring him down will be far from easy.

With the help of her pixy bodyguard and her living vampire roommate, she may just succeed. If she can quit getting caught.

Enter Kim Harrison's gripping debut novel and step into a world unlike any other. A world of vampires, pixies and fairies, witches and werewolves. A place where humans not only can no longer deny such beings exist, but in some cases, embrace the fact.

Harrison is sure to find success with this preternatural tale of intrigue. The individual characteristics of the bounty-hunting trio entwine to form a bewitching and mysteriously endearing partnership and add further depth to an already captivating tome. Welcome to The Hollows. Watch your back.

Summary: Great Mystery with Plenty of Room for Sequels
Review: Who knew that a book about a bounty-hunting witch running from her own bounty would have such a sweet soul?

On alternate Earth where half the human population has been wiped out from a vegetable-borne virus, all the creatures from the fairy tales, (ie, witches, vampires, pixies, fairies, "Weres," etc), dubbed "Inderlanders," have live a "seperate but equal" existance with humans, complete with their own police force, "Inderland Security." When Rachel, an down-on-her-luck bounty hunter quits the I.S. and takes one of the agency's best operatives with her, a bounty is put on her head by her boss. She has to fight off advances from her hormonally-challenged roommate, and THEN she discovers that one of the city's leading human citizens is growing and smuggling drugs. Things spiral out of control from there.

After a strong set up, Harrison takes time to develop her characters fully. The main plot of the book takes a backseat to several of the subplots involving secondary characters. And that's a GOOD thing. The book comes to a satisfying conclusion (not a cliffhanger), but there are enough mysteries and unanswered questions to fill the next several volumes.

This is a very strong early novel. Harrison really spends time letting the reader get to know the characters. Her style is descriptive, yet tight and well-paced. More importantly, this ostensively neo-goth story has a real heart behind the fangs and there's a sweetness to all the characters that surprised me but also entertained me. The tone is not nearly as dark as the cover would indicate. This is a good title for most anyone who wants a little adventure.

Summary: Kim Harrison Doesn't Pull Her Punches
Review: Wow. I got this book on a whim since I usually find vampire books to be somewhat predictable, either lacking in characterization or in plot. Not only does this book have multiple other "magical" creatures, the main first person character being a witch, but it also boasts a bevy of intriguing personalities each with their vulnerabilities & flaws(though they all appear to be gorgeous and have perfected sexy slinking through dark alleys).

Add a very unique What If situation: the world suffers a serious genetic plague carried by a engineered tomato (I had flashback to B movies on that little tidbit ) but the magical "inderland" creatures are immune and thus are able to reveal that they've been living alongside humanity for an indefinitely looong period of time. Yep interesting.

And that's not all. Not only does kim harrison manage to bring about a fresh look on vampires with a vast difference on the undead vs. dead, she also brings her own interpretation to the inherent nature of witches, pixies, fairies etc.

Finally, I was very excited that on top of the cool, if overly hot and always badass, characters with complicated stories and drives, this book did not descend into an internal character study- a particularly likely scenario since it is in the gothic first person POV. Instead there are some all out bloodletting, bonebreaking and hair-raising action scenes that are described with all the glee of a horror movie. Again Wow.

As a woman I love to see a heroine doing her thing and kicking some A** in the process . It should be no surprise I loved this & the second book, The Good, The Bad & The Undead, which may be even better.

Buy it!

Summary: Page Turner!
Review: Yes, the comparisons to Jim Butcher and early LKH are warranted, but Harrison has her own vibe going and it is fun! Rachel Morgan is a great protagonist and the chemistry between her and her vampire partner practically combusts. I'm looking forward to further entries in this series, because Harrison has definitely hit the ground running.

Summary: Unique Blend of Humor and Darkness
Review: You have got to read this book! What an enjoyable read. The character development was excellent and the scene setting was on target. With these two things combined Ms. Harrison has created a world that, if you are not careful, will make you believe that it exists. I mostly enjoyed that the story was told with out the usual graffic sex and over dramatised gore effect that so many of the other books of this genre seem to find necessary to incorporate. If your looking for tired over done hard core sex scenes you won't find them in this book (YAY!!)

Eventhough, Ms. Harrison can be lumped in the same genre as the LKHs, Anne Rice, etc, you can certainly tell that Ms. Harrison was not attempting to be anything like the aformentioned authors. In fact, I would say that Ms. Harrison has broken the mold and given us a UNIQUE & FUN perspective on a world that has been and continues to be extremely popular. Hats off to you Ms. Harrison for a well written book with a welcomed fresh approach. Oh, and one last thing-- A Pixie. Who Knew! Anxious for the next installment. Bring it on.
