Summary: What's a girl to do?
Review: Kim Harrison's debut novel is absolutely smashing! The world she creates is ripe with realism, danger, mystery, and humor. The character of Rachel is well thought-out and wonderful in her humor and misfit approach to life. When you've got people trying to kill you and all your stuff is cursed, what's a girl to do? Turn to your friendly vampire co-worker and strike out on your own, of course!

The characters are dynamic and believable as is the setting. Wonderfully written and refreshing in its approach, Dead Witch Walking has wormed its way onto my "favorite books" shelf...not an easy task by any means!

Summary: put her on your MUST BUY list!
Review: Kim Harrison's new book Dead Witch Walking is a good read and shows great promise for a new series! Kim developes her charcters slowly but with suffient depth to catch your attention. the basic premise is that, due to a bioengeenering castrophy a generation ago humanity was decimated to such numbers that the "paranormals" that were co-exsisting alongside with humanity had decided to "come out of the closet.
bounce ahead about 30 years and things have settled down a bit.
our heroine is Rachel, a bounty hunter who is a witch, hates her job, and cannot quit without a death sentence being put on her head. the story follows the events that take place once she decides to quit. Kim Harrison spins an excellent story and in doing so lays down a firm foundation for her "universe". book two is in the publishers hands, and she is busy writing book three as I type. So do not be disappointed at the loose ends at the end of the book, think of them as questions yet to be answered.

while some folks compare Kims work to L. K. Hamilton, I believe that she writes more like Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse. Kim, by this one book has earned a place on my Just Buy It! list.
you should do the same!

Summary: Dead Witch Walking is just plain fun to read
Review: Look, there are a lot of books out there worth reading, right? And then there are a few that are simply too good to pass up. Dead Witch Walking is one of the latter. Here we have a vast, cohesive world which holds together and takes a life of it's own. The characters are all developed fully and as engaging as our heroine, a tough street-cop witch in a dark, deadly world both intriguingly different and instantly familiar to our own. The villians are villanous, the allies are dubious, and the life-and-death situations are suspenseful. The overall "vibe" is also unique and yet familiar, a wonderful blend of a tale of the supernatural and a classic detective novel. I haven't read anything comparable since Charlaine Harris's wonderful "Dead Until Dark" series. And this, well, it just might top it. Just read it, and you'll see what I mean.

Review: Okay, ive gotta be honest. I initially picked up this book based on the cover, you know hot chick on it.But as i started reading i was jerked into this amazing world that i just couldnt escape. As a long time reader of Stephen King, i thought that no other author could keep me enthralled in their world like he did. I was wrong!!!! Kim Harrison is an excellent author, whom given time, may rival the King himself.

Summary: For fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tonya Huff
Review: On an alternate Earth a bioengineered weapon escaped from a lab, spread around the world killing off a quarter of the world's population. Beings of myth and legend known as Inderlanders because they were immune to the disease held civilization together until the germ died out. Local enforcement was dissolved and the Federal Inderland Bureau was formed to monitor the actions of the Inderlanders. The I.S. was created by out of work Inderlander law enforcement officials to police the supernatural beings.

Rachel works for the I.S. but every case she is sent out on results in failure. She knows her boss Denon hates her so she decides to quit and go freelance. Her friend Ivy, a live vampire, also quits much to Demon's dismay and he calls for Rachel to be assassinated for luring Ivy away.. The earth witch is no match for the creatures he sends against her so she decides to find the evidence that will convict Congressman Trent Kalanack for trafficking in Brimstone. If she is successful her contract with the IS is nullified and she is a free woman but Rachel almost gets killed in her attempts to expose the congressman.

Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tonya Huff and Charlaine Harris are going to love DEAD WITCH WALKING, a supernatural action adventure novel set in what feels like a fantasy realm. The gutsy and honorable heroine goes through a lot of perilous adventures to gain her freedom, but uses her earth magic powers as a defensive weapon that won't permanently injure or kill those attacking her. Kim Harrison has the magic touch to enchant her audience with her storytelling while placing a spell that requires reading future books in this series.

Summary: Great new magical series starter!
Review: Rachel Morgan is a witch and is employed by Inderland Security and not only bored with her job but seems to be getting worse at it. She has decided that all she wants to do is go out on her own. She decided that her boss won't mind her quitting (usually an offense punishable by death) and decided instead of taking in a leprechaun that she will use her three wishes to go it alone. But, in true Rachel fashion things go awry. She ends up taking a pixie with her and the best IS runner decides to go into business with her. Because she takes the best runner with her they do put a contract on her head.

Rachel is chased by Were's, Pixies, Demons and Witches to name a few. But at least the Vamps are staying away due to her "non-blood drinking" roommate Ivy (the fellow IS runner). Rachel dreams up a way to get the contract paid off by a rival agency. She and her cohorts set out to take a councilman down (who is a suspected drug runner). This leads to many different interactions that all have a magical twist, as well as trying to keep Rachel alive.

This is a great start for a new series. The characters all have great personalities. The author even tells how this alternate culture with magical beings became everyday. I love the pixie that wanted to be sterile for his wish. The book is fast paced and fun to read. The person who doesn't know where Nick came missed a big chunk of the book. The writing shows a large imagination and thought out characters. This has the makings of a great series.

Summary: we need more
Review: The reviewer had it right on this one, it is anita blake meets stephanie plum. The writing was good and the story line kept you guessing leaving at the end just enough questions for me to be biting my nails until the next book comes out to see what happens, but doesn't leave any big cliff hangers.... its a great book and perfect to help fill the time between laurell k hamilton novels.

Summary: Great fun and everything I wanted in a modern fantasy
Review: This book was exactly what it needed to be: fun without being flippant, adventurous without being exhausting, and sexy without being crass. While the idea of magical creatures side by side with humans is hardly new, Harrison presents a few new twists and I found the world well thought out and richly and believably drawn. I actually looked at my tomatos askance today!

I especially recommend this book to those who enjoy the world of Laurell K. Hamilton but find her books too raw. "Dead Witch Walking" strikes just the right balance: enough violence and sensuality to engross the reader without delving into buckets of gore. The pacing was excellent and the characters all extremely engaging.

Fantastic book. I can't wait for the next installment.

Summary: An awesome blend of anita blake & shadowrun
Review: This is a book that once you start you can't set it down. At no time was there a dull moment. We had the world knowledge of the supernatural and the use of magic as contraband. The characters were real in this book. Harrison actually made me care about them. Being a vampire in Harrison's 'verse is not a good thing. Rachel, the main character, was a heroine, yet she had her own flaws that made her human. The supporting cast was excellent as well. I really liked Ivy and I hope to see more of her and her story! Great job.
