Rating: Summary: Depends on the person Review: I thought it was a pretty good book except for the fact that it had a bad ending. But most of it I found interesting because it continued the lives of the chracters in Rebecca. I liked that.
Rating: Summary: Can I give negative stars? Review: This "sequel" was just plain BAD. Hill seemed to think all she had to do was mimic du Maurier's narrative style and dredge up the specter of Mrs. Danvers. Her characterizations are simply awful, like she just didn't pay any attention when she was reading REBECCA. I would be interested in reading a *true* sequel...one that shows how the DeWinters' relationship grew and progressed after they left Manderley. Hill just took zombie versions of the characters and made them dance around a bit before bringing her tedious tale to a depressing and completely unsatisfying conclusion.
Rating: Summary: Hated it! Review: What a waste of a trip to the library. Being a huge fan of Rebecca, Susan Hill takes the main character and turns her into a neurotic middle-aged woman. She should have left Rebecca alone with it's wonderful conclusion and insightful characters. Don't waste any time, money, or energy on this book.
Rating: Summary: Save Your Money Review: I gave this book a chance although most of the online reviews I had read were not promising. Unfortunately, I had to agree. I was unable to become involved in the story and had to try to force myself to finish it. I couldn't. I've sent it to the used bookstore for some other poor soul. Mrs. deWinter does not compare to the original Rebecca and is certainly no sequel. Save your money.
Rating: Summary: A huge disappointment Review: I had just read Rebecca when I heard there was a sequal. I knew I had to read it to find out how the couple's life worked out after Manderly. For all that boring description, I read on because I wanted to know what happened in the end. What a depressing finish for such a long struggle for Mrs. DeWinter! It really is a depressing view of life, and I was extremely disappointed. For anyone who does not want to ruin the first book, I strongly advise you not to read the second.
Rating: Summary: What a BAD book Review: I was disgusted when I found out that a sequel had been written to Rebecca, which is a wonderful and suspenseful book. Nonetheless, I decided to give Mrs.DeWinter a chance. But after skimming it I have decided that it is a worthless lump of burnt trash. Susan Hill should be ashamed of herself for ever undertaking the writing of a sequel to Rebecca. No writer would be able to match the suspense and romance of the original in a sequel. I probably will never read anything by Susan Hill from now on. This book should get -5 stars.
Rating: Summary: A good book... until the end. Review: I enjoyed Hill's sequel to Rebecca, that is, until the last few pages. Although she is more wordy than Du Maurier, I think that Hill captured the essence of the personalities of the narrator, Maxim, Favell, and Mrs. Danvers. I like how she incorporated lines from Rebecca into the sequel in order to tie the two together. But the ending disappointed me. Hill should have left it ambiguous, as Du Maurier did, instead of making it so definitive. But the book did interest me from beginning to end.
Rating: Summary: A must-read for any Rebecca fan Review: In Mrs. De Winter, Susan Hill successfully reproduces the style and tone of Rebecca. In the sequel, the reader is able to witness the heroine grow emotionally and become her own person. It is impossible for the reader not to emphathize with her every bit as much as in Rebecca. The intrigue which the characters of Mrs. Danvers and Jack Favell provide in the first novel is wonderfully and chillingly familiar in the second. Anyone willing to accept a sequel to Rebecca wil not find Mrs. De Winter disappointing. Susan Hill is to be commended for undertaking and meeting such a challenge.
Rating: Summary: BORING Review: Hill is a good descriptive writer, but in this case the audience is not looking for description, the audience is interested in the plot and what happens after Manderley burns down. The ending shocked me...Maxim comitting suicide!! My goodness. Mrs Danvers should have been left alone. I think Mrs De Winter would have thrown her out of the house and refused to have anything to do with her, the same with Jack Favell. It was just really really really boring. The part of her not being able to have children was very unresolved. I liked the original ending.
Rating: Summary: Blah Review: Hill should have left a perfectly good story alone. The mystery and just the thought of what happens after the book is the most delicious part. But no, here comes along an author who TRIES to write a sequel. If the names were different, you would have no idea that this was a "sequel" to Rebecca.
